Toyota’s Corolla also comes in hybrid and hatchback forms, plus its top-end GR spec offers Civic Type R-rivaling performance.

But Toyota goes about things in a decidedly different fashion.

Its hybrids lack the Civic Hybrid’s power, while the GR Corolla is like a mini rally car with its standard AWD.

While there’s no hatchback, the Hyundai Elantra range has sharp styling and a thrifty hybrid option.

It’s a terrific overall choice, too.

If you’re after polished handling, the Mazda 3 lineup can definitely entertain even though there’s no hybrid option and these cars are starting to feel a bit old.

The Subaru Impreza’s standard AWD makes it a great choice for those who want all-season traction, even if it’s never going to be as frugal as the Civic.

Value-wise, you get a lot of car for your money with the refreshed-for-2025 VW Jetta.
