 (är′kən-sô′) Abbr. AR or Ark.
A state of the south-central United States bordered on the east by the Mississippi River. It was admitted as the 25th state in 1836. The region was explored by members of Hernando de Soto's expedition in 1541 and passed to the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Little Rock is the capital and the largest city.
