Omnipoint and Ericsson signed the first US
GPRS contract in January 1999, and Ericsson currently is delivering
GPRS equipment to more than 45 wireless communications service providers for field trials in the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
Under the GSM/GPRS expansion deal, Nokia would supply the complete range of Nokia GSM/GPRS equipment, including Base Station Subsystems, Switching SubSystems,
GPRS Core Network, Short Message Service System, Multimedia Messaging centre expansion and Nokia's download solution.
General Packet Radio Service (
GPRS) is a new standard that allows the transmission of data over GSM telephone networks at a higher speed and with the convenience of immediate communication without waiting for dialup connections.
The system used for testing included the Nokia GMLC and Nokia SMLC positioning servers, and the Nokia
GPRS network solution.
