Inspiration for the story came from the French historian Gustave Schlumberger's works on Byzantium as well as Ion Dragoumis's Martyron kai Heroon Ema (Martyrs and Heroes' Blood) where Dragoumis voiced that instead of blinding his captures, Basil should have killed them all.
Esta pieza resulta anacronica en el Periodo Orientalizante Tardio, por lo que hace pensar en la punta de lanza de bronce hallada en la tumba 6 del heroon excavado junto a una de las puertas de Eretria interpretada como un posible cetro (Berard, 1972), aunque en este caso aparecio en la tumba de un aristocrata, sin olvidar que el hasta o lanza era en Roma simbolo de soberania (Alfodi, 1959).
