(mĕr′ə-lənd) Abbr. MD or Md. A state of the eastern United States. One of the original Thirteen Colonies, it was founded by Lord Baltimore in 1634 as a refuge for English Roman Catholics. Maryland ratified the United States Constitution in 1788. Annapolis is the capital and Baltimore the largest city.
