Over their lifetimes, the pain relievers hydrocodone/acetaminophen (e.g., Lortab, Vicodin) and oxycodone/acetaminophen (e.g., Percocet, Tylox) were the two pharmaceuticals most commonly used for recreational purposes (70% and 58%, respectively), followed by the anxiolytic diazepam (Valium) (42%) (Table 1).
Common opioid pain relievers include hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab) and oxycodone (Percocet, Tylox).
Some acetaminophen-containing products include hydrocodone with acetaminophen (Vicodin, Lortab), and oxycodone with acetaminophen (Tylox, Percocet).
Some acetaminophen-containing products include hydrocodone with acetaminophen (Vicodin, Lortab) and oxycodone with acetaminophen (Tylox, Percocet).
That makes it pretty hard to keep coming up with something that hasn't already been taken in a field that includes such familiar products as Xanax, Zantac, Zocor, Zoloft, Prozac, Maxzide, Zithromax, Thorazine, Quinidine and Tylox.
The most common trade names for oxycodone preparations include OxyContin, Percocet, Percodan, and Tylox (General Accounting Office [GAO], 2003).
Of those who used pain relievers, 48% used Vicodin, Lortab, or Lorcet; 34% used Darvocet, Darvon, or Tylenol with codeine; and 20% used Percocet, Percodan, or Tylox. OxyContin was near the bottom at 8%.
Pain relievers with "significant increases" in lifetime prevalence of use for the 18-25 age group include Vicodin, Lortab, or Lorcet, jumping from 15% to 16.5%; Percocet, Percodan, or Tylox, increasing from 7.8% to 8.7%; and hydrocodone products, rising from 16.3% to 17.4%.
Pain relievers with "significant increases" in lifetime prevalence of use for the 1825 age group include Vicodin, Lortab, or Lorcet, jumping from 15% to 16.5%; Percocet, Percodan, or Tylox, increasing from 7.8% to 8.7%; and hydrocodone products, rising from 16.3% to 17.4%.
The key active ingredient of OxyContin is oxycodone--the same substance used in Percocet, Percodan, and Tylox. Armed with questionable science and the FDA's approval, Purdue Pharma touted OxyContin as a less-addictive narcotic alternative to those more familiar products because of its novel formulation: a time release that would thwart those looking for a quick jolt.
