Initially the steamboats were dependent on costly Welsh coal, but in the 1860s two engineers (the British Aydon and the Russian Shpavkosky) developed an apparatus to pulverise the solid refuse left over from refining processes, known as astatki or mazoot, and blow it into a furnace in the form of spray, thus powering steam-driven turbines.
