     James Burns-Hartopp was born on 22 October 1862.2 He was the son of John William Burns and Helen Sherer.1,2 He married Florence Honoria Hartopp, daughter of William Wrey Hartopp and Lina Howe, on 4 June 1894 at London, EnglandG.2
     He was given the name of James Burns at birth.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Horse Guards.3 He gained the rank of Captain in the Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry.3 On 6 July 1894 his name was legally changed to James Burns-Hartopp by Royal Licence.1
