The uproar surrounding the University of Buckingham took a further twist on Friday when the vice-chancellor’s estranged wife claimed that she had been arrested.

Cynthia Tooley, 42, whose allegations about the conduct of Professor James Tooley, 65, led to him being suspended last year, told friends she was detained by four officers on Tuesday.

Mrs Tooley, who was appointed MBE in 2023 for services to business and charity, said she had been accused of breaching a court order banning her from distributing private documents belonging to her husband. She was later released without charge but police had kept her telephone and laptop.
