Director: Roland Emmerich
Cast: Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman
And so we begin where all lists of great science fiction must: with Will Smith punching an alien in the mouth. Oh, were you expecting something more sophisticated? A little heavier, darker and subtler, and less bombastic and Randy Quaid-intensive? Don’t worry, there’s plenty of that elsewhere. But you won’t find many films that deliver quite as much in the department of pure, popcorn-snarfing fun.
No one’s forcing sci-fi superfans to love Roland Emmerich’s War of the Worlds variant. But how can you not? Again, this is a movie where Will Smith knocks out an extraterrestrial invader, then drags its body through the desert, talking shit the whole time. Where Jeff Goldblum essentially reprises the Ian Malcolm role of the snarky scientist no one listens to. Where Bill Paxton delivers a speech that could have earned him actual votes for president. And remember the White House getting vaporised by alien weaponry? Of course you do. So we will not go quietly into the night – today, we celebrate Independence Day as one of the GOATs. Deal with it.
