A Georgian freehouse since either 1695 or 1795, depending on whether you believe the sign outside or the writing in the coloured glazed panes in the front door, this hostelry was converted in the early 19th century. It was originally called The Union Tavern, but was renamed the Cutty Sark in the 1950s when the famous tea clipper was put on public display nearby.

Thanks to the Thames lapping against its wall and the resulting busy tourist trade, this place is something of a local landmark. You can even still enjoy an order of local whitebait like a true nineteenth-century Londoner. Charles Dickens was a fan of this pub, and it features in Our Mutual Friend.

4. Duke of Greenwich

Hidden away on a corner just behind Maze Hill station, The Duke of Greenwich dates back to the mid-1800’s but a recent makeover has turned it into a modern boozer with acres of space thanks to an airy extension and massive beer garden. You’ll find a wide selection of South-London brews on tap and a rotating calendar of pop-ups from various breweries throughout the year, plus a food menu that goes big on BBQ (they’ve got a smoker out back!) and hearty roasts that come with unlimited veggie refills.
