35 best '90s TV shows and where to stream them now

Sure, the so-called ‘golden age of television’ is generally thought to have launched in the early 2000s, but the proverbial jar was loosened in the previous decade. The ’90s is where TV started to take big risks. Where Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David turned the sitcom on its head. Where David Lynch actually got to bring his nightmare logic to primetime. Where The Sopranos and Sex and the City expanded the concept of what a television show could look like.  We now spend more time in front of our TVs than ever before. Yet it’s hard to imagine a time when television felt more important than the 1990s. Thankfully, if you weren’t around to experience it live, it’s easy to binge the shows that made the era what it was. Here are 35 can’t-miss suggestions, along with where to find them. Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard are ready to knock ’em dead

Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard are ready to knock ’em dead

There are plenty of reasons to get excited about the musical Death Becomes Her, which begins its Broadway run on October 23. For starters, the show is adapted from the iconic 1992 film starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as two women fighting for the same man. If that sounds predictable, we should remind you that the plot also involves a magic potion that promises the women eternal youth.  There is also the casting. Death Becomes Her, which premiered in Chicago earlier this year, stars Megan Hilty (as Streep’s Madeline Ashton) and Jennifer Simard (as Hawn’s Helen Sharp). They’re two of the most charismatic and vocally exciting stars on Broadway—and also, not coincidentally, two of the most hilarious. So much so that we featured them on Time Out New York’s Fall Preview digital cover this month, which is set in the the cemetery of Trinity Church downtown. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out New York (@timeoutnewyork) What’s perhaps most exciting about Death Becomes Her is that it is an old-fashioned musical comedy: Marco Pennette’s book and Julia Mattison and Noel Carey’s score promise laugh-out-loud hijinks that stand out amid the darker, more serious productions that have dominated Broadway in recent years. Cole Escola’s Oh, Mary!, a spoof on the life of Mary Todd Lincoln, may be closest in vibe to what Death Becomes Her hopes to be. That is not lost on the stars themselves, who are excited to revel in the joy and laughter of it all.  “Br

The 10 best sandwiches in NYC

Sandwiches are among the world’s most inspirational foods. It would be a Sisyphean task to even begin to enumerate all possible combinations here. They are there at some of life’s happiest moments. Picnics in the park. Half-imaginary tea parties. The big game. When people talk about “sad desk lunches,” they are usually talking about salads. If you’re ever feeling blasé, find motivation in the myriad possibilities of the sandwich. If you can dream it, a sandwich can be it. Unless it’s a hotdog.   RECOMMENDED: The 25 most spectacular sandwiches in the world

The best bars in D.C. for all types of drinkers

After a long day of political mayhem, lobbying gossip, and handling nuclear codes, sometimes all you want to do is kick off your shoes, loosen your tie, and enjoy a good cocktail—or two (or three). Luckily, D.C. knows how to let off steam and has plenty of bars to do just that. In true D.C. fashion, a few of its bars are steeped in history. At the Round Robin, you’ll be drinking where Mark Twain once drank, and at the Old Ebbitt, you’ll be dining in the shoes of President Johnson. But while the famous ones are well worth checking out, it’s not all history around here. In our guide, we’ve included trendy ramen joints, rooftop terraces and design-your-own-cocktail bars. Squid Game The Experience

Squid Game The Experience

If Netflix’s Squid Game was one of your favorite shows and you’re looking forward to the new season premiere this December, you’ll want to try your hand at some of the challeneges at Squid Game: The Experience here in NYC. Set within Manhattan Mall (100 West 33rd Street by Sixth Avenue), you get into teams of up to 24 people each to complete challenges across 60 minutes, including those that appeared on the TV show (yes, you’ll get to try your hand at the iconic Red Light Green Light) plus a number of brand-new ones built specifically for the experience. Once done playing, you can enjoy a night market offering a variety of Korean and international sweet and savory foods, plus drinks.

Greenwich Hotel

Greenwich Hotel

4 out of 5 stars

Is the role of a hotel to shield its guests from the outside world or render them participants to the goings-on of the city they get to temporarily call home? If you’re leaning towards the former, then the Greenwich Hotel, the eight-story luxury abode near Tribeca that's partly owned by actor Robert De Niro, is where you’ll want to stay while in town.  Nestled on the corner of North Moore Street and Greenwich Street right by the West Side Highway, the building boasts 73 rooms, some of which overlook an interior courtyard, 11 suites and two duplex penthouses that are aptly named The Greenwich and The North Moore.  On a recent visit while staying in a luxurious suite on the second floor, I was struck by one aspect of the experience: I forgot I was in New York. When looking out the window and into the courtyard, I noticed the absence of the very things that make the city what it is on a visual level. There were no buildings, no people rushing down the street and all was… quiet?  Despite the disconnect from its surroundings, the hotel offers a premium experience when it comes to your actual stay: the beautiful bathroom, complete with a shower and a bath, was stocked with Red Flower products developed specifically for the hotel and the bed, by British company Savoir, was particularly comfortable.  But there’s more: guests receive a complimentary newspaper every morning and the mini bar is filled with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks to be enjoyed completely gratis (keep in mind tha

Sabrina Carpenter “Short N’ Sweet” pop-up

Sabrina Carpenter’s sixth studio album, Short N’ Sweet, is set to drop this Friday. And Angelenos will get to celebrate the much anticipated new record with a visit to this exclusive pop-up experience, courtesy of Complex L.A. at 433 North Fairfax Avenue. Friday, August 23 through Sunday, August 25 from 11am to 7pm, folks can shop exclusive merchandise inspired by and dedicated to the 25-year-old singer and actress. From T-shirts to tanks, hats, totes, CDs and vinyl records, the roster of products on offer run the gamut in terms of style and genre, but each one pays homage to the artist behind the hit “Espresso.”

Virgin Hotels New York City

Virgin Hotels New York City

This luxury hotel by British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson opened in 2023 in the NoMad district with over 450 guest rooms, suites and penthouses, plus an outdoor pool club only accessible to guests, event spaces and Everdene, a 4,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor dining and cocktail destination that will also feature nightly entertainment. Brooklyn-based firm MARKZEFF joined architecture gurus at Stantec to design the hotel, which, among other interesting characteristics, features subtle nods to nearby Madison Square Park while paying homage to the sort of bolder elements that the Virgin brand is known for—including the signature red staircase that connects the third and fourth floors of the property.  If you’re going all out or are perhaps looking for an interesting staycation option, consider booking the Sir Richard’s Flat, the 2,800-square-foot suite on the hotel’s 35th and 36th floors. The two-bedroom duplex includes a walk-in bathroom with luxe amenities, a kitchenette, a curated art collection within the space and, perhaps most notably, 24-foot windows with panoramic views of New York.

Katz’s at Bar Next Door

Katz’s at Bar Next Door

Angelenos will soon be able to taste one of the most iconic dishes served in New York when Katz’s Delicatessen, perhaps the most recognized deli in all of the East Coast, will open in L.A. for one day only this Saturday, June 29 from 11am to 6pm. Brought to this side of the country by Postmates and West Hollywood spot Bar Next Door, where the activation will be setting up at 9159 Sunset Boulevard, the pop-up will be serving a limited number of Katz’s famous pastrami sandwiches on rye with a side of the legendary house-made mustard and pickles. You can opt for either pickup or delivery on Postmates, and in addition to the app, there’ll be a limited number of sandwiches available at the bar for walk-ups (though you’ll likely need to wait in a standby line). Fair warning: The culinary delight will cost you $25 for half a sandwich and $45 for a full one. But trust us: The food is worth the price tag. Guests will also be able to look through limited-edition branded merch.

Mercer Labs Museum of Art and Technology

Mercer Labs Museum of Art and Technology

Mercer Labs, Museum of Art and Technology is a unique new immersive museum created by Roy Nachum, the artist behind Rihanna’s famous 2016 “Anti” album cover, and his business partner Michael Cayre, a real estate developer.  The 36,000-square-foot space opened in early 2024 at 21 Dey Street, inside the bank building that used to be part of the now-nextdoor Century 21. There are a total of 15 different rooms to explore, each one attacking all the senses upon entrance. Some outstanding installations include the one that the staff refers to as "The Dragon," where a total of 500,000 individual LED lights hung on strings adorn a room and are lit up to created 3D videos, including one of a galloping horse, that will catch your attention. Towards the end of the walkthrough is what can only be described as a cave of beautiful pink flowers (plastic ones), where there will soon be a bar as well. This is perhaps the most Instagrammable space within the museum as a whole, one that will likely come to represent the destination on social media once it officially opens. An installation of a robot will also delight. Dubbed Kuka Robot, the machine is found behind a glass in the middle of a bed of sand. The robot makes sand castles, sketches and more while visitors look on wondering how it's all possible. Taking a tour of the new Mercer Labs is something you might want to consider doing with kids. Not only are the visual elements striking and entertaining but certain rooms are specifically targ

'Ugly Beauties' by Curry J. Hackett

'Ugly Beauties' by Curry J. Hackett

A new public art installation by artist Curry J. Hackett has just taken over The Plaza at 300 Ashland in Brooklyn, and it's as futuristic as art gets these days: the piece, dubbed Ugly Beauties, features panoramic, AI-generated images of Black folks among various native weeds. According to an official press release, the work, on display through May 2, highlights a “metaphorical connection between society’s perception of these species and its treatment of Black people.” Upon approaching the structure, the viewer will immediately notice the juxtaposition of the various elements depicted, prompting all to think of our perception of what is beautiful and what is part of society at large. “Ugly Beauties expands on Downtown Brooklyn Partnership’s commitment to activating itsshared spaces with art installations that enliven the public realm and capture the spirit of theneighborhood,” said Regina Myer, President of Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, in a statement. “With residents, shoppers, workers, diners, and other visitors rushing around the neighborhood, we hope this piece will impart a moment of reflection and help Brooklynites to realize the beauty all around them. ”

Astra Lumina

Astra Lumina

There is something simultaneously spooky and romantic about walking through the Queens Botanical Garden after sunset—especially while participating in this year's Astra Lumina: An Enchanted Night Walk Amongst the Stars. A total of nine different installations are set up throughout the trail, each one capturing your attention in different ways, all embracing the power of light as their medium of choice. If it's an out-of-the-ordinary Christmas-adjacent light experience that you’re after, look no further than Astra Lumina.

Sky Skate

Sky Skate

If it's an eclectic kind of skating activity that you're after this holiday season, look no further: Sky Skate, the highest skating rink in the city, is officially back at the Edge in Hudson Yards starting November 15 through January 14, 2024.  Make no mistake: although the rink is set up in the indoor portion of the famous sky deck, you're still 1,131 feet in the air, on the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards. That is all to say: perhaps opt for something a bit different if you're scared of heights?  But if you do decide to partake in the seasonal activity (tickets are available for 30-minute slots right here), make sure to also peruse through the site's other offerings, including City Climb, the highest external skyscraper climb in the world that challenges guests to scale the outside of a 1,200-foot building then lean out from the outdoor platform at the top of structure, according to an official press release.  We are, indeed, shivering with fear.

You can once again float down the Chicago River in a hot tub this winter

You can once again float down the Chicago River in a hot tub this winter

Chicago Electric Boat Company's beloved hot tubs are back for the 2024-2025 season! Starting November 13, folks who are 13 and older can cruise down the Chicago River in hot tub boats, which launch from the Marina City docks at 300 North State Street. Needless to say, the activity is one of the best things to do in Chicago. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Each vessel can fit up to six passengers (a total of 800 pounds at once) and they are all self-captained, so you'll get to steer it any which way you want with a hand lever. Don't be scared—the boats' maximum speed is about one mile per hour! View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out Chicago (@timeoutchicago) As for food and drink options: Unfortunately, you won't be allowed to bring any food on the boat but you're more than welcome to fill the available cooler with beverages. There are also floating cup holders for you to use.  According to NBC Chicago, the vessels "are also equipped with Bluetooth speakers, while featuring UV lights and a saltwater cleansing process to keep the boats sanitary in between uses." Throwing a nice little fiesta on the boat seems like the perfect winter activity, if you ask us. Price-wise, you're looking at between $350 and $425 per 90-minute session, depending on the specific day of your booking. Split that by six passengers and you've got yourself a reasonably-priced outing that happens to be fun, different and oh-so-memorable.  Check out all available bo

The first-ever Kith store in Chicago is opening in the Gold Coast

Kith, the famous New York-based streetwear brand by clothing designer Ronnie Fieg, will finally hit Chicago. CoStar reports that the company has leased a multilevel space in the luxury district Gold Coast at 50-54 E. Walton Street, joining a roster of high-profile brands that have recently relocated or will soon move into the area, including, including Bottega Veneta, Cartiel, Chanel and Van Cleef & Arpels. The new Kith store will replace Sprinkles Cupcakes. "A deal for the space, which includes about 4,500 square feet on the ground floor, was disclosed during Acadia Realty Trust’s call with analysts Monday," reads the CoStar article. "The real estate investment trust, a large retail landlord throughout Chicago, did not name the tenant, which was described only as a well-known, New York-based fashion and footwear lifestyle brand. That retailer is Kith, according to people familiar with the deal." At the moment, Kith operates 14 locations throughout the United States, the majority of them in New York. California, Florida and Hawaii are the only other states that boast local stores—so the arrival of the shop in Chicago is clearly a big deal. Given the success of the company, the destination is sure to swiftly join our list of best streetwear stores in Chicago. It helps that Chicago is home to a strong streetwear culture, as made clear by the slew of businesses that call the city home: the first BAPE store in Chicago debuted to much fanfare this past summer, joining the ranks of

The igloos will be open daily starting today through March 2 between 10:30am and 9pm. You can pre-book a 90-minute reservation right here. It might still be too hot out to pair all that fare with a spiked hot chocolate, so why not opt for an apple cider or mulled wine instead? More "traditional" beer, wine and cocktail options are also available. As fun as the igloos are in and of themselves, make sure to also spend time all around the Winter Village either before or after your reservation. Among the many activities you should partake in is the 17,000-square-foot ice skating rink that is free to use if you bring your own skates. We love rushing out of our apartments without a jacket on, feeling a nice breeze through our hair without sweating but, as the holiday season approaches, we can't help but crave the sort of festive cold weather that we've come to associate with this time of the year in the city.  Following an unseasonably warm few weeks and a currently-in-place drought watch, though, things are about to shift: forecasters are predicting cooler temperatures as Veterans Day approaches.  Expect more of the same—highs in the low 70s and lows in the mid-40s—tomorrow, followed by a drop in temperatures on Saturday. According to the Weather Channel, Manhattanites will have to deal with temperatures between 40 and 55 degrees on Saturday. Showers are expected to hit the area on Sunday into Monday, putting a stop to a historically long dry spell that may have very well affected our water supply system. If you were planning on attending the Veterans Day Parade on Monday, worry not! Experts believe that any possible precipitation will clear out by the time the street festivities kick off. As for next week, it's all looking pretty dry except for a mid-week shower, accompanied by slowly decreasing temperatures (it will likely hit the low 50s on Wednesday!). Suddenly, we feel an urge to browse through our list of best things to do in the winter in NYC. Happy (almost!) holiday season!

Six Chicago restaurant closures you should know about

Six Chicago restaurant closures you should know about

As delightful as it is to report on restaurant openings, announcing closures that significantly alter Chicago's culinary landscape feels like true heartbreak. Alas, that is what we are here to do: Tell you all about the way the city changes and adapts every single day. With that in mind, here is a list of six local gastronomic destinations that have announced their imminent shuttering throughout this week.     Revolution Brewing The original location of Revolution Brewing, the cherished Logan Square brewpub, will shut down on December 14. The owners have decided to consolidate Revolution's brewery and taproom at 3340 N. Kedzie Avenue, allowing Chicagoans to still enjoy the brand's top notch offerings, albeit in altered settings. Taqueria Chingon As previously reported on, Taqueria Chingon, one of the best restaurants in Chicago, announced that it will be closing for good this month, on November 26. The Logan Square favorite cited "the upcoming winter paired with rising cost of doing business" as the reason behind decision. It did, however, say there are plans to return sometime in the future—which is why we'd like to suggest you visit the eatery and grab some delicious fare some time in the next few weeks. Who knows? Your patronage might entice the owners to open up at a different address ASAP. Bar Cargo Its been seven years since Bar Cargo brought top-notch Roman-style pizza to downtown Chicago. All good things clearly have to come to an end, though: The River North piz

This pop-up mobile stand connects New Yorkers with grandmas all over the world to talk about life

In 2012, in an effort to connect his then 95-year-old grandmother Eileen to his fellow New Yorkers, Mike Matthews purchased an 80-pound lemonade stand off Etsy, hauled it around town and placed his laptop and a chair by it before video-chatting with his Seattle-based grandma.  “She couldn’t really travel anymore and she wanted to come to New York so I thought she could meet New Yorkers virtually,” Matthews recalls over the phone. “Every week, I would have a different question prompt to bypass the small talk and people would sit on the chair and talk to my grandmother. Conversations ranged from deep, emotional ones to more casual talks.”  Eileen passed away at the age of 102 in 2018 and Matthews decided to retire his grandma stand.  A lot has happened since: a global pandemic that upended the way we live and communicate with each other, inflation-related issues, political upheavals and a general sense of anxiety permeating all aspects of daily life across the country. Photograph: Mike Matthews “About six months ago, I had an overwhelming feeling of everyone being on edge, stressed out and lonely and thought we need to have some good,” says Matthews. “So I said, why don’t we bring this back?” Still living on the Upper West Side with his family, Matthews, who works in marketing and social media, decided to slightly revamp his project by buying a lighter, foldable lemonade stand painted purple, Eileen's favorite color, that he could carry around on his e-scooter and set up just

NYC Marathon 2025: Everything about the date, registration and how to enter next year’s race

The 2024 NYC Marathon has come and gone—which means that it's time to start training for next year's event. First things first, though: given the popularity of the race, you'll want to sign up for it ASAP. After all, there are only 50,000 spots up for grabs alongside a slew of registration requirements that you'll want to analyze sooner rather than later. Below, we run through how you can register for the 2025 race. We also answer all the other burnings questions you have about the feat of athleticism.  How to enter the New York City Marathon in 2025 There are a number of different ways to sign up for the race. Let's start with "The Drawing," which is the marathon's non-guaranteed lottery-like system for general entry. Officials have yet to announce the opening dates of the drawing, but keep in mind that it will be split into three categories: applicants in the NYC metro area (within 60 miles of NYC), national applicants who live outside of those confines but within the U.S. (including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories) and international applicants—basically, all non-U.S. residents. New York Road Runners (NYRR)—the association behind the marathon—will announce the lucky chosen ones about a month after the lottery opens.  Another registration option involves the "9 + 1" program, by which runners have to register and complete nine qualifying races in 2025, also volunteering at one even listed on this website. This avenue is open to NYRR paying members and will guarantee yo

According to an official press release, the shop now features light-up wreaths, oversized ornaments and Disney-themed trees "to create an immersive holiday atmosphere." In terms of toys, there is a lot to choose from: from a Be Our Guest singing tea cart play set inspired by Beauty and the Beast to plush toys paying homage to Toy Story, Aladdin, Ratatouille, Cinderella and more, you might actually be able to check off your entire holiday shopping list on site. Expect new items inspired by upcoming releases as well—like the high anticipated Moana 2 collection! The movie is scheduled to drop this Thanksgiving. You will soon be able to stay inside an exact replica of the cottage from 'The Holiday'

Among the many movies that the average American likes to indulge in during the holiday season is, of course, The Holiday the 2006 film in which Cameron Diaz's Amanda and Kate Winslet's Iris swap homes for a needed break during the winter. One of the production's main draws has always been Iris' beautiful cottage in an English village, which Diaz's character gets to call home for a bit. Next year, Americans will get to experience the cottage's charm in Georgia, where an exact replica of the home will soon be built, with a completion date scheduled for October of 2025. Yes, that's quite a long time for now... but bookings to actually stay at the cottage are officially opening this Thursday, November 7, right here. Given the attention that was given to the project—led by Lucy Small, the owner of interior design shop State and Season Home Design and Supply—when it was first announced a while back, we imagine that the available bookings will fill up pretty quickly, so you might want to set up an alert for yourself, reminding you to schedule your stay in a couple of days. "With its charming stone exterior and picturesque surroundings, this is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway or a peaceful retreat," reads an official description of the Holiday Cottage in Ellijay, Georgia, about an hour from Atlanta. "Take a seat on the comfortable sofa and enjoy a cup of tea while admiring the stunning views of the countryside and crackling fire." Below, check out some renderings of th
