The best chilli crab in Singapore

The best chilli crab in Singapore

Chilli crab is Singapore's national dish — agree or disagree? Well, no matter the answer, there's no denying that it's an iconic dish loved by foreigners and locals alike. Spicy, sweet, starchy, and savoury, chilli crab never fails to hit the spot every time, especially when you dunk some steaming hot mantou (Chinese buns) into the pool of red, saucy goodness. The dish is said to have been invented in the 1950s when a woman called Cher Yam Tian added bottled chilli sauce instead of the usual tomato ketchup to her stir-fried crab dish. Shortly after, Cher opened Palm Beach Restaurant along East Coast Road and everyone went crazy for her creation.  Today, you can find chilli crab at just about every local seafood or zi char joint. But not everyone gets the sauce just right, or uses meaty crabs that are oh-so satisfying. Whether it's your first time trying the dish or the 100th, hit up these seafood joints for plates of chilli crab that don't disappoint. Healthy Soba IKI

Healthy Soba IKI

As a specialty handmade soba shop tucked away on the somewhat secluded fourth floor of One Raffles Place, Healthy Soba IKI isn't an eatery we originally had high expectations for. But the freshly made soba here is a clear winner. Besides being handmade in their back kitchens daily, the 100 percent buckwheat noodles also come with a number of health benefits. Make sure you try the Avocado Kaisen Totoro Soba ($18), a chirashi-style soba which comes with fresh salmon and tuna that's paired with a cold dipping sauce.

Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors

Plants are far smarter than you think. Case in point: award-winning musical Little Shop of Horrors, where an unassuming floral shop assistant and a not-so-unassuming plant take centre stage. Watch on to see how shop assistant Seymour (Andrew Marko) handles this blood-thirsty carnivorous plant, innocently named Audrey II after his co-worker crush (Vanessa Kee).  This two-hour musical is a campy mishmash of horror and comedy, where you’ll find yourself chuckling along during moments of dark humour. With Audrey II occasionally breaking out in R&B beats and clever musical numbers, Little Shop of Horrors promises an entertaining production from start to finish. It’s directed by TJ Taylor and musically directed by Elaine Chan, both veterans in our local theatre scene. The musical is backed by a five-piece band, where you’ll be nodding along to catchy hits like Somewhere That’s Green, Feed Me, and Suddenly Seymour.  From April 12 to 28, head down to the SOTA Drama Theatre to see how this famed tale of a carnivorous plant unfolds. Tickets start from $38, and you can score 15 percent off with an early bird discount running from now to March 13. Otherwise, catch the musical with a group of friends for package deals (10 percent off for four tickets; 15 percent off for eight tickets).  Buy tickets here.

The Korean barbecue is the star of the show, using a smokeless charcoal grill so you won’t have to worry about cooking fumes lingering on your clothes. The English House has an affordable $9.99 menu to combat inflation

Anything that famed chef Marco Pierre White puts his name behind, there’s plenty hooha. After all, this is the same man that made Gordon Ramsay cry. In any case, The English House by Marco Pierre White has proven to be a restaurant worth its salt since opening back in 2018 – it doles out traditional Sunday roasts alongside Hong Kong dim sum. While a la carte menu prices typically hover around $50 per person though, they’ve recently launched a $9.99 menu to combat rising prices. Photograph: The English House And this recognition of inflation is much appreciated – now we wouldn’t have to break the bank to dine at this British institution. You can try classics like beef ragu pomme puree and mushroom risotto, or taste Asian flavours with dishes like baked pork chop rice and twice-cooked pork belly rice. They even had mini beef wellingtons once, a specialty British dish. And all mains priced at $9.99? It’s certainly worth it.  Photograph: The English House   The Inflation Menu is available from Monday to Saturday, and is available for both lunch and dinner. Since the menu changes on the daily, you can take a look at their Instagram for the latest update.  READ MORE:The best cheap eats in SingaporeThe best cheap things to do in Singapore under $20The best affordable steaks in Singapore under $30
