Damn, 2024 is coming through with some absolute bangers. We had Brat summer with hit-after-hit from Charli xcx, but we also saw Sabrina Carpenter sing silly little outros to her sleeper hit Nonsense, Taylor Swift quite simply refusing to leave the charts (by any means necessary) and Chappell Roan catapult into fame faster than you can say ‘Pink Pony Club’. This year really was for the pop girlies. But what are the songs that defined the year? Well, aside from the above, we’ve seen chart-topping country boy crooners, instantly iconic rap takedowns and joyously twee indie – all making 2024 a pretty stellar year for new music. I was tasked with building our ranking of the best songs of 2024 (so far) and compiled this list by asking our amazing international team of writers and editors to contribute their year-defining tracks. Nestled in the tiny mountain hamlet of Hensonville, charming boutique hotel The Henson offers a winning blend of upscale luxury and rustic immersion in nature. It’s also well located to take advantage of some of the best activities the Catskills has to offer while also providing a relaxing respite from outdoor adventures.  The historic building dates back to 1918 but has been brought into the 21st century thanks to thoughtful design with earth tones, contrasting salvaged wood and modern furniture. The main central gathering place, the Living Room, features a long couch, tables and copious amounts of board games. (I felt like I was staying at a chic friend’s upstate house for the weekend.) The rooms range from cozy, 130-square-foot spaces to larger suites stocked with Casper mattresses, Frame TVs, Marshall Speakers, Grown Alchemist bath products, Frette towels and rainfall showers. (Basically, all the things you want after a long day spent outside!) Outside of the pleasant rooms, there are some other unique amenities you’ll want to take advantage of during a stay here. A wellness room contains fitness equipment and an intimate infrared sauna perfectly positioned to provide a view of the surrounding mountains. Speaking of views, a spacious rooftop deck overlooks Windham Mountain, Black Dome Valley, a swimming creek and herb garden. On the food and beverage front, an honor bar acts as a shared mini bar and is stocked with a thoughtful collection of interesting drinks and snacks.

This stylish spa and wellness retreat is perched amid the rolling hills of Sullivan County amid flowering meadows that feel a world apart from nearby crowded tourist hubs. Of course, that sense of calming otherworldliness is exactly what you want in a spa weekend, and Hemlock Neversink delivers it in spades. Spread out across 230 acres, the holistic complex was developed by Foster Supply Hospitality from a site that was once the New Age Health Spa. The current property builds on that early wellness pioneer’s legacy to create a space that nods to the past while feeling firmly grounded in the present.  The 33 rooms—ranging from accommodations for one to multi-room cabins—have a Quaker-influenced sensibility with warm earth tones, wall pegs and wooden furniture. This charming, historic resort is about the closest you can get to the platonic ideal of a coastal Maine hotel. Perched on a hill overlooking Somes Sound, the circa-1884 property is infused with authentic, lived-in character that’s been given a recent luxurious makeover to bring it into the 21st century. Comfortable chairs on the wraparound patio look out on the water and the majestic Cadillac Mountain. A hill slopes down past a heated swimming pool to a waterside restaurant and dock. A stay at Eastwind Oliverea Valley is the type of “getting out into nature” where it’s so quiet the silence almost feels loud. Even though the site is less than a 10-minute drive from busy Route 28, the resort is tucked into a beautiful forested glen that feels world’s away from the more developed parts of the Catskills. (It also has the lack of cell phone service to match.) If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a woodsy wonderland, this one’s for you. Instantly, I was struck by the resort’s modern, Scandinavian sensibility which contrasts with other more rustic, camp-like lodging in the area.   That sense of sleek, natural immersion extends to the lodging options, as well. Guests can choose from 27 A-frame, freestanding cabins: Lushna Cabins, Lushna Cabins with Decks, Lushna Suites and Double Lushnas. Located on Mountain Road between Stowe Village and Mt. Mansfield, the resort’s location means you’re close to both the world-famous runs at Stowe Resort and the charming restaurants and bars that can be found downtown. That’s assuming, of course, that guests want to leave the resort itself which boasts large and bright contemporary rooms, a popular on-site restaurant and bar, tennis courts, pools and a luxurious, 35,000-square-foot spa. The most enticing thing about the rustic and charming Glen Falls House, located in the heart of the northern Catskills, is what surrounds it. That’s not a knock against the hotel itself—with a historic main house dating back to 1881 that’s been thoughtfully renovated and updated. It’s just hard to compete with 47 acres of picturesque wilderness right outside your door. (Not to mention rivers, multiple breathtaking waterfalls and an inspiring mountain view.) It’s easy to take advantage of all that wilderness while staying here thanks to miles of easily accessible hiking and biking trails that connect both to the main house as well as separate cottages and hilltop motel rooms. In the summer, guests can enjoy a pool while winter visitors can book time at a forested outdoor cedar barrel sauna. Throughout the year, welcoming bonfires cast flickering flames on the forest’s edge.  It would be easy enough to offer all of those outdoor recreation options, but the food and beverage program here is, by far, one of the most creative and interesting in the area. Chef Michelle Williams has created a menu of comforting food with a strong focus on local ingredients. The years of tailoring experience that can be found at Alan David Custom is evident as soon as you walk through the unassuming midtown door and enter a room full of every kind of suit you could imagine. Once you settle into a comfortable leather chair surrounded by your many sartorial options, a friendly and helpful staffer will ask you questions on preferred color, pattern and type of fabric before presenting numerous materials from the likes of Loro Piana, Zegna, Reda, Scabal and more.  After making your choices for suit fabric and lining, an on-site tailor will take over 20 precise measurements for a perfectly tailored garment. Custom suits and tuxedos start at $1,400 while overcoats start at $2,000 and dress shirts start at $220. The business promises full canvas bespoke construction, a guaranteed perfect fit and free alterations for a lifetime. Those customers interested in an additional level of tailoring can also choose to have a basted fitting for garments which adds about two-weeks of time and $100 to the suit. Alan David Horowitz, the current owner and CEO of Alan David Custom is a fourth-generation tailor—the business was originally founded by his great-grandfather who opened his first store in 1926 on the Lower East Side. All of the custom garments on offer here are hand-sewn in the New York shop as opposed to overseas production and average turnaround is 4-5 weeks with a 2-week rush program also available.

The curtain rises on a living room that is stuffed to the brim: Nearly every inch of Alexander Dodge’s set is covered, Hoarders-style, with objects collected over a long life. Chairs and couches are barely visible beneath boxes, books and records; broken chairs and old board games are piled on top of each other. Suddenly, as though in a garbage-dump Birth of Venus, Danny DeVito emerges fully formed from beneath a pile of blankets. A human being has been there the whole time, all but buried under all that junk.  “All of this is treasure,” Sam insists, and the value that people place on objects is at the heart of Theresa Rebeck’s slight new play. DeVito’s shut-in character is warned at the start by his daughter, Amelia—played by Devito’s real-life daughter, Lucy—that he could end up on the street unless he cleans up his place. The rest of the show, peppered with mild jokes (including a runner about the lameness of Ohio), explores whether Sam really needs the things cocooning him in his home. Rounding out the cast is his neighbor and only friend, Foster (Ray Anthony Thomas), who harbors a junk-related secret of his own. The most interesting moments of this good-natured but threadbare comedy, which Rebeck wrote during the pandemic lockdown, touch on the relationship between physical objects and memory. Callen-Lorde, the vital local organization that’s been providing accessible LGBTQ+ health care for decades, is set to mark the 23rd annual Callen-Lorde Community Health Awards this year on the Hudson River waterfront at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers. The world of made-to-measure clothing is steeped in tradition. Many contemporary customs regarding suiting—from button placement and color to fabric choices—have been in place for centuries. While that continuity lends a certain timelessness to the industry it also makes it ripe for innovation. Local atelier Watson Ellis is seizing that opportunity. After working in the male-dominated business for over a decade, Melissa Watson Ellis realized there was a glaring lack of custom suit companies catering equally to women, men and nonbinary individuals. Over the last few years, the worrying threat of runaway artificial intelligence has loomed large in many of our minds. Still, it’s hard to imagine a productive way to respond to such a complicated, societal issue. For instance, though I have many issues I'd like to discuss with Elon Musk, he’s not exactly taking my calls at the moment. Thankfully, a luxury resort a few hours north of NYC is now offering an experience to address this ambient anxiety head-on. It also happens to take the form of my favorite coping mechanism: having a few cocktails and pretending something doesn’t exist. JetBlue launched a brand-new direct flight from NYC to Belize City this month, and Time Out was one of first few to be able to take advantage of new “runway to reef” service.  On the morning of the inaugural flight, I could hear the joyful gate celebration taking place halfway down the terminal. He’s not only the highest grossing European illusionist—he’s also Spain’s highest grossing performer across all art forms. In NYC, we're spoiled with blockbuster art exhibitions, a vast gallery scene and prodigious public art. When looking back over 2022, considering the hundreds of visual art shows to grace the city this year, there are five that we'll be talking about long after December 31.  It was tough to narrow down the list to just a few of the best, and there are many honorable mentions we must shout out first, including The Whitney’s “no existe un mundo poshuracán“ exploring Puerto Rican Art after Hurricane Maria, the staggeringly hyperrealistic NOTaMUSEUM pop-up and the takeover by jaguar sculptures around town, to name a few. It seemed like everything was immersive this year, from art to theater to holiday experiences. One immersive art exhibit stood out from the rest, though.     The Radio City Rockettes are one of the city’s most iconic symbols of the holiday season, a mind-blowingly talented group of dancers and bona fide athletes who rehearse six days a week for hours at a time. Erik Alden, managing director of Time Out Live, is neither of those things. But one thing he is? He’s game. So we sent him to the Rockettes’ rehearsal studio on the top floor of Radio City to warm up with dancers from the show and learn part of a number from this year’s Christmas Spectacular (running through January 1). Here are his big takeaways:  Bendy is beautiful “Before we started dancing, we had what they called a light stretch warm-up but what I would probably call a full workout. Their big thing is stretching their legs because so much of the movement is centered there, but there was also a big focus on the core. I’m definitely not as bendy as them. When I heard ‘high kicks,’ I was thinking waist-high, but their feet go so high in the air they call them ‘eye-high kicks.’ I did not make it that high. One of the city’s most sky-high attractions is once again welcoming visitors. The (quite literal) crown jewel of the Empire State Building, the Top Deck, is now open to the public. The newly renovated 102nd floor observatory is reached via a glass elevator from the 86th floor observatory. (No, you will not be leaving with ownership of a whimsical chocolate factory.) Once you arrive at the tip-top of the iconic skyscraper, you'll be greeted with a spectacular view of the city and beyond. Like, way beyond. In fact, on a clear day, the observatory says you can see up to 80 miles into the distance. (That’s far enough to see six different states!) The panoramic view can be seen out of 24 windows spread all the way around the architecturally significant space. If it's been a while since you've been to the Empire State Building, it may be time for a return visit. After a huge renovation, the building is now home to three different floors of observatories, as well as a new museum, with everything from facts on the famous building to a giant King Kong you can pose with. (There seems to be a trend of that lately.) You can find more information on the experience here. Tickets start at $72 for adults to enter the one-of-a-kind space and $66 for children. That may seem a bit steep but if you’ve spent the last five months staring out or your apartment window at a parking lot, a change in perspective may be sorely in order.
