"Daddy, who's Sam Goody?" Nora tilts her head as she pulls the dipstick slowly through the rag like she's being graded on her technique.

"Sam Goody wasn't a who," he says, hooking his hands under her armpits and hefting her up so she can slide the dipstick into place. After a moment, she takes it out again and he puts her back down—but not before bouncing her like she's taking a step on the surface of the moon. It never fails to make her laugh. "Sam Goody was a place: a magical wonderland that disappeared from the world years ago."

"That's sad," Nora murmurs. Her forefinger slides down the edge of the stick to the max and minimum lines. She stops just before her finger touches the oil clinging to the metal just above the minimum line because she's a good girl who believes Tommy when he tells her things, like that she'll melt like the Wicked Witch of the West if oil ever touches her bare skin.

He'd feel bad about lying to her about something so dumb, but he fully believed his mom when she said that turning on the dome light in the car at night would get them arrested until he was well into his teens. This is the kind of generational trauma he's okay to pass down.

"It is sad," Tommy agrees. "I still cry about it sometimes."

"It's okay to cry, Daddy." She pats his hand, carefully avoiding the oil stain on his knuckles. "Papa said so."

"That's because Papa's taps go on every time the wind changes direction."

gonna answer my asks after a nap and work but yo.. some of you need to stop playing in my face 😭😭 bobby's DEAD and i still have eternal cynics in my inbox worrying about bucktommy's fate when the show is CLEARLY setting up a reconciliation in upcoming episodes. it's not subtle so at this point i'm starting to suspect that the worrying is satire. why on earth do you think the writers ONCE AGAIN highlighted the fact that tommy's still pining for buck? or that buck was so obviously pleased by the admission after being hurt by tommy's initial dismissal? why do you think they showed tommy's sorrowful expression as he watched buck break down on that monitor? BE SERIOUSSS
