my theories on kunikida’s childhood/backstory *·˚ ༘♡

kunikida is my favorite character (world shock) so i wanted to share my thoughts of it are taken from aspects i have annotated about him/he has said. these are theories!!! nothing confirmed. pd: i have taken some info from doppo kunikida’s irl life, asagiri has taken a lot of details of his life so i doubt he won’t now. please enjoy! :) i also apologize for any misspellings, english is not my first language.

1) kunikida & his family:

kunikida is one of the few characters that have confirmed families (as said in the mini novel kunikida & katai’s magnificent days), so the possibility of being an orphan is eliminated. it’s not mentioned if he has parents or not but he has a family. here are my options/theories abt his family

  1. his dad/his mom (or both) work for the military/government. usually the “stick” personality is associated with having a military family, kunikida’s character trope (istj, moralist) fits in the “military family” stereotype and considering bsd has a lot of topics around the military (like the current arc), it’s a high possibility. this also explains kunikida’s hate of authorities (we will get into this later), and even if they’re not from the military they’re probably people with high prestige/on the traditional side (ex: the zenin’s in jjk).
  2. on the opposite side, kunikida’s family are anti govt (anarchism). again this is mostly related to his authority hate. this also can be linked to the azure king (if you want me to elaborate please let me know!)

these are my main ideas. important to note that irl’s stepdad worked for the ministry of justice and was an ex samurai (which could connect him to one of the fukus). other small things i have noted:

kunikida cares a lot about reputation. maybe this need for the ada’s reputation to stay intact is a reflection of his family.
kunikida used to pass a lot of time with katai (more than with his own family) so they are probably busy people/weren't really present in his life
kunikida has a “motherly” behavior yet he has a strong personality that is usually linked with a strong patriarchal figure. i personally link this to the fact that kunikida’s household could have been more matriarchal. with this, kunikida could have conflicts with his mother possibly related to his idealism.
kunikida is the youngest child. don’t debate me on this.
kunikida’s family dedicates to save people’s lifes/bring justice to them. so he followed their footsteps in his own way.

2. kunikida’s young years

2.1) his possible relation to the great war:

(spoilers for bungo stray dogs manga chapters 65 and 66)

when you think about kunikida's potential childhood, most people assume he had the most "normal" childhood out of all of the ada members. however, kunikida could have (sadly) been involved similarly to how yosano was or in other ways. this section will be divided in two sections: kunikida doppo's irl relation to the sino japanese war (with a connection to irl mori) and kunikida and the usefulness of his ability in the war context.

kunikida doppo and the sino japanese war: for a little bit of context, the first sino japanese war (1894-1895) was a conflict between the japanese empire and china because both countries were looking for being the dominant influence in korea. in this time, multiple authors that were bsdfied participated as war correspondants with the exception of (surprise surprise) ogai mori, who enlisted in the japanese army as an army doctor.

kunikida doppo worked as a war correspondant along with his friend katai tayama in the sino-japanese war. there is no information about where kunikida worked in, but katai worked in taiwan in the same division as mori; this war correspondency was vital for kunikida's career, he got extremely popular due to his war journalism). both kunikida's (doppo and his brother shuuji) were disciples of soho tokutomi, a japanese historian and journalist; it was under him where he became a war correspondant, learnt german (similar to mori) and worked in the newspaper "Kokumin no Tomo" founded by soho, and where mori published "the dancing girl".

kunikida had a involvement in the russo-japanese war, but it's insignificant compared to his work in the sino japanese war. i put this in the post because, as mentioned, asagiri puts details from the irl's life in the story; this is not the reason why i believe he was in the great war, but it makes a little bit more possible.

as i keep rereading this arc, i noticed something yosano said that caught my attention:

doesn't this sound a little similar to mr. idealist "no one will die in front of me"? because it does to me. even if they don't mean the exact same thing, the general idea is the following: keeping people alive.

yosano truly values human life

kunikida's ability and his usefulness in the war:

here's why i believe kunikida may have been involved in the great war; his ability. kunikida's ability "doppo poet" consists of being able to create anything that comes from the notebook. kunikida's ability, even if doesn't look like a threat at first glance, it's a tricky one; if he wanted, he could use a bigger notebook he could summon bigger weapons (such a b0mbs, bigger guns) but he stays with a smaller notebook (which yes it's practical, but why would he use grenades when he could summon better weapons?)

kunikida, with a never ending pile of paper, could summon multiple useful weapons almost at the same time; for the great war, having someone that could create weapons in an instant is convenient. it's also important to remember that ability users' were searched at that time (+ mori's plan, that is explained in chapter 65 or 66).

but besides his ability, and with the past section focused on yosano's trauma and response due to going to the great war, it's not difficult to assume he could have been in a similar situation. kunikida's constant creation of weapons that killed people, that he didn't not want to do because he was a child, in front of him, with no way to stop it because he was forced to create those weapons and because he was a child... he couldn't save them all, kunikida's own experience as a child soldier/weapon during the great war, in this context, is why he's so attached to them, because he sees his little self in them, and in general, it may be possibly the main reason of ideals' being born, so “no one will die in front of me” is kunikida’s reaction to the cruelness of war, just like yosano’s (panel attached below) plus, kunikida's reaction to death is very emotional and raw, which is something that is not seen a lot in bsd (and it's one of his most important characteristics), and has been a theme around for a looong time now.

i wish i'm wrong in this one (please)

2.2) kunikida the rebel

as the name says (lol) kunikida could have been a rebel in high school as well. kunikida does not care about breaking laws (except the ones where he acts like a normal citizen). this could be the aftermath of years of trauma; it's not linked to why he is the way he is but is... more of a way to show he's not that much of a "stick"

ps: between all this mess, he met katai. i don't have a theory abt their meeting but i know those two find each other in the moment they needed it the most. :) following the war timeline, i think katai's family were also involved and they met when it finished and... trauma bonded (to put in blantly).

3. kunikida and the past (why does he not want to talk abt it?)

i want to dive into the most interesting part of kunikida's conversation abt his backstory. he does not want to talk about it.

there are multiple reasons this could be such as shame and trauma; i don't have an elaborate reason why (there could be MULTIPLE) but here are the ones i feel that are the most likely:

as i said before, kunikida could have been from a family of politicians and military members. as he's an idealist, and the topic of politicians and corruption could fit perfectly, he would want to disassociate himself from them.

> this doesn't have to be only abt having govt affiliated family btw. but just the idea that he doesn't want to associate himself with his family because they don't have the same ideals.

he got disowned. not much to mention here
trauma. again not a lot to say here.
rocky relationship with his family. or maybe they are just shitty people and doesn't want to be with them anymore.

othe stuff i have thought about is that kunikida is a liar. not exactly something possible considering ranpo should know by now but it’s still… there. it’s possible.

that's it! i hope you enjoyed. sorry if it's too long i love kunikida. :)♡ let me know what you think as well!

I have a headcannon that the Orphanage regularly committed tax fraud. And a bunch of other crimes along lines.

And that they had the older kids do it for them as part of their chores. That place was shady as hell and the Headmaster used to work in the criminal underground.

I rest my case.

So just imagine the Agency being given a case to investigate the place.

And usually they wouldn't be given such a thing but it's this sneaky operation that's been going on for years.

And the police are just baffled and beg the Agency for help. Ranpo puts on his glasses, solves the case but doesn't tell anyone.

He's too busy laughing his ass off.

So Kunikida and Dazai are sent.

And they just find Atsushi, one of the oldest kids at the Orphanage sat at a creaky old desk.

Case closed.

Dazai has to leave the room because he's laughing so hard. The Headmaster tries to blame the kids for it. Which obviously doesn't work.

Atsushi makes a comment about does that mean I have to go back to my cage? Which starts a whole other investigation and the Agency end up taking him in.

Aside from the murder, Dazai and Atsushi have completed the same amount of crimes. Hell Atsushi's might be higher, they just don't know the exact amount he's done.

Dazai is very proud of this fact while Atsushi is embarrassed.

"Come now Atsushi you should be proud of your accomplishments."

"They're not accomplishments!"

I like to think that somewhere in the agency there's a little photo album of the members

It started as a Fukuzawa-Ranpo-Yosano family photo album but then a picture of kunikida got thrown in there and some of Katai.

Theres at least one picture of everyone. When looking through it it's pretty clear when someone new joined since there's so many of them for a bit and then it fades back into group pictures.

Kenji gives them some pictures of him as a kid on his farm. There's pictures of all of the major achievements each one did, entrance exams, first cases, katais last case of actually being there, a couple of birthdays and agency holiday parties. Atsushi and kyouka's wanted posters are in there. Dazais gets added after a while, but they struggled to track it down.

Maybe at some point they start gaining little pictures of the members lovers as well, a few of ranpo with poe (and Karl ofc) they manage to get one of Chuuya and Dazai, a really blurry one of Akutagawa and Atsushi.

There one big, happy, complicated family and it's great.

au where fukuzawa finally has a Talking to to poe and is satisfied at the end, even though he does worry about ranpo and then, later on, is thinking that at least this will be the hardest talk since he avoids thinking about wtf is going on with the tanizakis and kunikida and dazai r lowkey all over each other and kenji and kyouka havent yet expressed much interest in these things and yosano hasn't really thought of anything serious adn atsushi-

and then he sees atsushi laughing at something akutagawa says and goes through another breakdown (this one a little more severe becuz poe has been openly simping over ranpo but aku once cut off atsushi's leg) and then approaches them and invites akutagawa for tea to have a Conversation

then as he's walking away, readying himself for this, he sees kunikida and dazai with chuuya and is about to have another mini breakdown but then deep breath in deep breath out - he pretends to not notice and pledges to think of it another day

he wonders if its ranpo's influence thats causing all his kids i mean employees to date ppl from rival organizations that could potentially hurt them or if he was just cursed to have kids i mean employees who date enemies

Ranpo would use a ring pop to propose to Poe and Poe would take it as a joke but ranpo would be 100% serious about it.

Poe blushes and says yes, not thanking too far into it and next thing he knows him and ranpo are researching ways to get illegally married in Japan.

Josuke tries to come out while Joseph chokes on tacos ft. Tonio and Jotaro

originally posted on AO3 https://archiveofourown.org/works/43214907

Summary: Josuke tries to come out to his dad, and Jotaro is there to support him while Joseph tries to eat 12 Tacos in one go.

Words : 1 569

Content:

It was now or never. Josuke had spent the night before and this morning psyching himself up for this, practicing what he’d say in the mirror.

“Dad..” he began, toward his reflection whilst perfecting his pompadour.

The words ‘Dad’ still felt odd on his tongue. Despite Joseph being biologically his father, the idea of actually calling him 'Dad' filled Josuke with a strange discomfort., Mr. Joestar wasn’t something he could use as an alternative as he was going to tell him something so intimate, coming out to him was a massive deal. Perhaps he’d refrain from referring to him by any name whatsoever.

Josuke took a deep breath and stood up straight, staring deep into his own eyes. “I have something very important to tell you.” he asserted whilst checking his outfit.

He quickly decided that this was the perfect tone of voice to use. It sounded sure and demanded Joseph’s full attention without sounding too demanding, just the way he wanted.

“Josuke! Hurry up!” He heard his mother’s voice yell from downstairs. “You said you were going to be leaving at 11:20 and it’s 11:25.”

“Shoot-”

He’d just about made it in time.

Joseph was already standing outside Tonio’s with Jotaro by his side. As soon as Joseph saw Josuke he waved and beckoned him over.

“Hey, there you two!” Josuke said as he approached the two in a small jog.

“Hey, Josuke!” Joseph chimed with a wide grin.

“Hello,” Jotaro replied, voice flat as usual.

Josuke had already told Jotaro about his sexuality. Last week specifically and the guy was perfectly fine with it. He’d supported Josuke, and given him a pat on the back to stop his crying, he’d even helped him tell his mom about his sexuality so he had also decided to help him with telling his father. Once he did this he’d really have done everything he needed to for now, he’d feel like he could rest awhile and settle into his new life.

Of course he knew coming out is a lifelong journey but having all of his friends know about this part of himself, his family AND having a great boyfriend like Okuyasu just put him at ease, made him feel like he’d done enough work for now and forever.

“Shall we go inside?” Jotaro asked, he seemed to be watching Josuke’s expression very carefully.

Josuke swallowed as he gazed at the front door of Tonio’s and gave a slow nod in response.

They’d all ordered. Josuke had gone with “whatever is good today.” As much as he loved Tonio’s food he didn't have the energy to decide on something. His nerves had consumed him. Tonio had decided to treat Josuke and Jotaro to a nice Spaghetti and spent a while bragging to Jotaro about just how great this meal would be despite Jotaro’s blatant disinterest.

Joseph ordered 12 fucking tacos. Now, one may ask themselves ‘why were Tacos an option at an Italian restaurant?’

Well, our answer to that is “For the plot of the story of course” Tonio said with a smirk and brought out the large dish of 12 neatly lined up thick tacos, glad to be finally relevant to a Jojo’s fanfiction.

Josuke thanked Tonio for the meal and began mentally preparing himself for the vital moment whilst pushing his spaghetti around the plate and occasionally eating some. It was delicious but he couldn't enjoy it.

Should he tell him after they finish eating or should he just go ahead and take the leap of faith right now? Sure Joseph was a pretty old guy and for that reason, he had initially decided to keep this side of himself from him however Joseph would leave for America soon, if he wasn’t too happy with this he could just try his very best to move on- he didn't even see the man as his father anyways.

Joseph shoveled what looked like a chain of tacos down his throat. All 12 of them were connected in this long rope-like thing dripping with sauce, salad, and copious amounts of cheese, it was one of those sights that look so unhealthy and so large that you feel slightly sick looking at it. Why was this a meal option at an Italian restaurant again?? Why had Joseph even ordered this?

Josuke nodded toward Joseph clearly giving him the thumbs up, Josuke decided to speak up. He took a deep breath. Wait- what the hell should he even say? His mind was blank despite his desperate scramble to recall what he had prepared this morning.

“Old man,” He heard Jotaro say from across the table, interrupting his thoughts, “Josuke has something important to tell you.”

“MKJHEIBSJBIUGEB,” Joseph replied, trying to speak whilst having his sixth taco halfway into his mouth whilst he struggled to force the fifth one which was lodged in his throat down due to the fourth one not having been properly chewed whilst the remains of the third leaked from the corners of his mouth in a messy froth of sauce and meat. He gripped the sides of the table as he attempted to wheeze out the blockage however all he could do was sweat and muffle desperate choked cries.

Thank god Jotaro had helped him out there. Josuke took a deep breath after he’d gotten this reply from Joseph and spoke. "I have something very important to tell you”

He held his breath bracing himself to speak the next words, using Jotaro's reassuring look from across the table as encouragement.

“JEHEUJHAHSJDEHEBJ” Joseph replied as he slammed his fists against the table desperately, hacking chunks of the mixture so squashed that you'd be shocked to discover it used to be a taco all over the table, painting it in saliva, vomit, cheese, and hot sauce.

"I'm gay."

“YUGUHGUGUG” Joseph's head slammed into the remaining tacos splattering huge meaty white and brown chunks all over the walls and floor of Tonio and his face sank into the meal.

The other diners in the room couldn't contain their gasps. How could anybody say such a thing? Sure he was practically ancient but not even the most homophobic old men could come up with something that offensive.

Jotaro narrowed his eyes. "Old man, this is your son, what the hell is wrong with you?" He gave him a gentle punch, however, his face clearly showed he wished to hit way harder. Jotaro furrowed his brow and awaited the man's response, hoping he'd give the right one this time. Jotaro nowadays wasn't one to outright express anger unless he really needed to but homophobia like this just wouldn't fly.

Josuke looked toward his meal, tapping his finger against the metal fork creating a steady consistent clink sound in an attempt to ground himself. He didn't know what to expect going into this and had prepared himself for the worst, yet, it still really hurt. The idea that a part of himself, a part that has always been with him, sickened his father to this extent. His insides were jelly due to the strength it took to keep his thoughts running at a million miles per hour.

"I'm sor-" Josuke heard himself mutter, hanging his head low.

"Don't apologize Josuke, the old man is in the wrong here." Jotaro interrupted, voice booming. "What the hell do you have to say for yourself?!"

Joseph shot up and began quickly spinning around, bits of food that painted his face flying around as he did so. The snake of Taco’s leaking from his mouth swirling around with him as the small corners of his mouth that remained unclogged leaked with drool and vomit. Was he trying to wriggle it out like a worm?

"Huh?! Do you think it's okay to treat your son like that? Why the hell would you say that? Do you know how hard it was for him to come out to you? To tell you such an intimate thing about himself…!" Jotaro spat, fists clenched. "You are a terrible father."

"Hypocrite," a random customer said.

"Huh?"

Silence.

"Are all of you enjoying your me- MAMA MIA!" They heard the clatter of a metal dish against the hard floor ring throughout the restaurant. The room shifted their focus from the rather emotional scene to Tonio who was standing at the door from the Kitchen. "Is he okay?!" He shrieked in a frantic dash toward Joseph.

Jotaro shook his head.

"He's a homophobe Tonio."

Tonio gasped. Joseph did the worm. He’d gotten one Taco out finally but he still had way more to unlodge and limited time before he’d suffocate.

"I- I’m shocked." He looked toward Joseph.

“HGUYGUEGUYG” Joseph said as he rolled around on the group, clothes catching the vomit chunks on them and crushing them against the fabric of his now slimy jacket which definitely was going to reek for weeks if he survived this.

"Hey! YOU DON'T GET TO SAY THAT JOSEPH YOU AREN'T GAY!"

“E8u8982989jjhuh” Joseph was B-boying on the ground with flexibility no 79-year-old should have.

The entire room was filled with gasps and shrieks, even Josuke couldn't suppress his reaction.

"Oh my god, why would you say such a thing..!" Tonio yelled in shock.

Jotaro shook his head and stood, clearly biting back his rage, "let's get out of here Josuke."

"L- let's do that.." Josuke replied, still shocked from the amount of blatant homophobia he'd just experienced.
