Alda's Sketchbook

@alda-rana / alda-rana.tumblr.com

Thirties (not for much longer), she/her, high school teacher with artistic leanings and social anxiety. I used to have different sideblogs but I kept posting to the wrong one so now it's all in one place: Discworld fanart, my own neverending attempt at writing a novel, occasional conlanging, nerding out about Ancient Greece, etc. I'm French and there isn't much I can do about that.

USERNAME LORE GIVE IT TO ME NOW YOU ALL

So I've been using "Alda" as a pseudonym since I was a teenager; it's based on the first letters of my real name (A. L. Da...) The "Rana" was added when I needed a fake name for my Facebook account because my students had found me under my real one (back when middle schoolers still used Facebook, which tells you how long ago that was). I chose the Latin word for "frog" because I was working on my PhD dissertation about the play Frogs by Aristophanes and frogs had been sort of taking over my life for a while in the form of various frog-themed gifts from my friends (frog mugs, frog candles, plushie frogs, etc.) Plus I'm French. And I thought the combination sounded nice.

A quick sketch of a new DnD character I'm going to attempt playing soon... her name is Tabatha, she's a gnome sorcerer and she has absolutely silly amounts of charisma, I have no idea how my shy and unassertive self is going to get away with it !

A watercolour painting of Skeppsholmen in Stockholm, made because I needed something to cover up a big hole the plumber made in my toilet wall to search for a leak that ended up being somewhere else

I'd heard about the Cat Distribution System from tumblr, but I never expected to be a direct beneficiary - until I was! This is Maja (pronounced Maya, the Swedish way), who turned up one night under my neighbour's car and, since said neighbour has a yappy and energetic little bulldog, ended up being our guest for the night. And the night after. And the next and what I'm basically getting at is that she's ours now. (I took her to the vet as soon as I could, of course, to see if she was chipped; she wasn't. I put up a few posters in the neighbourhood, all the time secretely hoping that nobody would call and we'd get to keep her. It's been a month with nothing but one prank call from some teenagers, so I think we're good now. Getting her chipped & registered in our name next week)

Now, over the last year and a bit, we've been making very slow progress at taming Heidi - our very shy, very nervous former stray, so named because of her propensity for hiding, and who even now still doesn't let us touch her (even though she can now get pretty close when she's hoping for food scraps). So it's been a bit weird to once again find myself with a cat that I can actually pet and who purrs and sits on my desk and does normal cat things.

The main problem is that, not surprisingly, Maja is very afraid of Heidi and will growl at her and even attack her if she gets too close - and it's heartbreaking to see poor Heidi, who's trying to make friends with this bold little newcomer in her territory, have to retreat and run away. I've been reading up on how to help cats become comfortable with each other, but little of the advice is applicable when one of the cats can't be touched or comforted in any way... Fortunately the house is big enough that they can stay out of each other's way most of the time, but I hope they can learn to get along better.

Finishing the Equal Rites series with quick sketches of Amschat the Zoon Liar (with Esk), Treatle and Simon, and Granny with Cutangle on a boat.

This reread and draw-along is doing wonders for my productivity; I'm forcing myself to follow the rythm of the reread (which is admittedly quite slow since I just read a few pages every night before bed) so I have to be fast and not seek perfection. These drawings are far from perfect but at least they exist!

hey honest question, did anybody have GOOD stuff happen to them in 2024? cause it was really bad for me and for most people i know, so it would be nice to hear about anything that's been going WELL for any of you. even if it's small stuff. just to know there's light out there.

I went skiing for the first time in years, finally got in good enough shape to do some proper mountain hiking again, went back to Sweden and visited Stockholm, and on the way back I got Engaged!! to the lovely Sweirdo* with whom I have had the privilege to share my life for the last six years...

Être prof consiste juste à perdre ses stylos h24 et être dans le déni.

Moi à mes élèves : Mais comment ça vous n'avez pas de stylos ?! Comment faites-vous pour les perdre tous les temps ?!

Moi : *perd mes stylos*

Facebook memories showed me this sketch from 6 years ago of my dear departed Poupouille using my then-boyfriend (now fiancé! :):)) as a cat tree...

She was a dedicated people-climber, she was. Whenever I washed my hair she'd jump on my shoulders to get high off the smell of shampoo. I miss her dearly...
