meet cute between physicist!reader who works at the local planetarium and uncle shouto who brings his itty bitty bffs (tenko and bug) there on one of their afternoon adventures
"hello," you say, bowing politely towards the two children at your feet. your lukewarm coffee threatens to slosh over the side of your mug, nearly staining the papers you'd just gone through hell to print ahead of your meeting. you overcorrect to avoid disaster, which results in an awkward, stiff sort of gesture. the two kids blink up at you curiously.
you falter. you've never been great with kids. "uh... what's your name?"
"i'm midoriya tenko!" the little boy says proudly, lifting his hand in greeting like he's introducing himself on his first day of school. it's endearing, and so is his wide smile.
"is this your little sister?" you ask, nodding towards the toddler clutching tenko's shirtsleeve.
"uh huh!" he nods, his curls bouncing. "she's bug!"
you freeze, about 98% certain you'd misheard him. "... bug?"
the girl lifts a tiny hand, just like tenko had a moment prior. "i bug."
Liv…… you COOKED with that tenko and bug piece. I love it so muchhhhh, ESP THE HOSPITAL MEETING ITS JUST SO CUTE WITH THE BALLOONS OH MY GOD
TY MAYAHHHHH <3
tenko picked out all those balloons himself—papa told him to just pick one but how could he possibly choose??—and was so SO looking forward to giving them to you and bug, but he was so excited when he got there that those balloons were IMMEDIATELY forgotten about the minute he saw his kaccha. (thankfully the hospital room ceiling was not that tall and they were easy enough for izuku to retrieve)
katsuki, izuku, and shouto go out drinking one night and you stay home with tenko and bug. shouto eventually drags their drunk asses back to the house just before midnight, and the three of them sneak (with a distinct lack of any subtlety or grace) into the kids' room to see tenko and bug all sprawled out side by side on the futon in their jammies, the grown men giggling to themselves the whole time. you can't even be annoyed with them because it's so cute.
as baby gets older and starts babbling more—still not saying proper words but clearly trying her best—tenko always knows what it is she's trying to say. she wants her blanket, she's hungry, she's tired, she wants to play outside. you have no idea how he does it, but he's somehow always right.
you hear the pitter patter of little feet after the front door of your home swings open, and the sound gets louder and louder until tenko appears in the doorway to the living room.
"auntie!" he exclaims, his smile as bright as the afternoon sun streaming in through the open doors of the sunroom. you smile right back. "where's bug?"
"bug's sleeping," you tell him with a laugh, setting down the yellow onesie you're in the process of folding, kneeling on the engawa in front of the laundry basket. there are only a few little pairs of socks left to match.
"in bug's bed?" tenko asks. his arms are slightly raised from his sides, his knees bent, like he's poised to take off running at any moment. it's so endearing that you have to hide a giggle under your palm.
you nod "yeah, buddy. bug's sleeping in bug's bed."
"and don't go waking her up, you menace."
I think Katsuki seems like a really good dad right off the bat. You’re hormonal, sleep deprived, leaky, and just struggling. And when you have a meltdown over how he’s naturally such a good dad when nothing feels instinctive or intuitive to you at ALL, he grabs you by the shoulders and looks you dead in your eyes to tell you he’s terrified and feels like he’s fucking everything up every moment of every day.
the truth is that you and katsuki just struggle in very different ways. you're outward about it, but he always just bottles up his anxieties—he always has, ever since he was a kid. he's gotten better about opening up over the years, about sharing those things with you, but when it comes to parenthood he feels like he needs to be strong for you. like when he puts on his uniform and goes on patrol, you're relying on him to keep it together in a crisis. what he doesn't realize is that he's inadvertently made you feel like you're the only one who's struggling.
once he realizes that he makes a concerted effort to change. to support you by sharing the ways he's faltering and ask you for help. which in turn means that you can do the same. you're both new at this, but at least you have each other—and that sweet, perfect little baby girl you love so very much.
(sidenote: this reminds me sooooo much of an ushijima fic that @/mintmatcha has!! i highly recommend it!!)
"soooo...." tenko's little voice cuts through the hum of cicadas, cuts through the static of the hot summer day, and captures your attention. "where's the baby at now?"
you look over at your nephew, and your sunglasses slip down the bridge of your nose. it's disgustingly hot out today, midsummer and scorching, but tenko and katsuki had insisted on taking a walk to the park to fill your afternoon. for fun! tenko had insisted, which was much more convincing than your husband's you need to leave the house and get some vitamin d—you look like a damn ghost.
"still in here, buddy," you tell him, pointing lazily down to your stomach. you still aren't really showing much, and your recollection of high school biology might not be the best, but you trust the situation hasn't changed drastically since the last time tenko asked (three hours ago.)
you suddenly feel queasy.
midoriya tenko keeps asking uncle kaccha about when he'll have a baby because he wants a little brother btw (<- his ass does NOT understand family trees)
katsuki tells tenko the good news first, before anyone else in your life, with a lengthy (well-rehearsed) precursor about how when your uncle has a baby that means you have a cousin.
the kid immediately runs to izuku squealing “papa!! i’m gonna be a uncle!!!!!”
