crafting/crochet side blog for @starswallowingsea || i mostly do amigurumi, sometimes embroidery || he/they

Introduction

Hi my name is Shay and this is my crafting side blog ! It started as a crochet blog (hence the url) but it's since expanded with other fiber crafts that I've been learning. You'll find posts about things like:

  • Crocheting
  • Knitting
  • Sewing
  • Shuttle Tatting
  • Bobbin Lace Making
  • Net Making

And probably other things as I get into more crafts. I love making lace and toys in particular which is most of what you'll see on here, though I'm always wanting to try new things! You can find more about me on my main blog @starswallowingsea if you're interested!

Bobbin lace practice update I tried a footside and it was a little awkward but I think it makes enough sense. I forgot to twist the first end and passive pairs at the top to secure them when they come off the pins so I'm probably going to undo everything and redo it maybe tomorrow so I can have it as a sampler like my normal torchon ground sampler. I really need a better place to do this though since when I get close to the bottom it's kinda awkward to cross and twist the bobbins.

anyway found a cute crochet shawl pattern on ravelry i think will work for my purposes since i want to be able to wear it out at fancier events/a specific place with a dress code now i just. have to figure out the color i want to do it in...

i went and got some yarn for this today. and another for a sophie scarf (for the same reason but i'd like to accessorize differently you know) and a shawl pin which were all on my plan to get today. and then i also bought some beads (for the shawl) and two (2) things of sock yarn. dont ask how much this cost i dont want to think about it

I've been thinking about my craft goals for the future and recently I've been interested in garment making. I just finished a sophie scarf for my sister and I'm working on one for my mom but I'm tempted to make one for myself (debating if I want to go white for a summer one and blue for winter but I'll have to see what my local yarn shop has). Speaking of my local yarn shop, they also sell shawl pins that are just gorgeous so maybe I'll start with a few of those both crochet and knit and see how those go. I've been poking around on ravelry (@/starswallowingsea on there if you want to add me and see what I'm doing) for patterns and once I move again I might try making one and see how it looks... as for lace, I think I want to make lace trims to add to my shirts since I wear those mostly untucked and lace on the bottom edge and cuffs I think would be a nice contrast there. Anyway here's some pics of the sophie scarf for my sister. I need to get ready for the day so I'll end this post here.

I finally got around to winding my pen bobbins and trying some stuff so here's a little bit of cloth stitch. I enjoyed it but everything gets tangled so easily t-t. I have a few easy patterns that involve doing footsides and headsides saved that just need to be printed...

Update. I liked the colors so much i clipped my bobbins to tie this off and i think this'll just be a little bookmark or something as my first ground sampler

Thank you!! I also crochet, knit, and tat so I'm quite used to making sure my tension is where I want it to be (though it has been a time trying to adjust my pillow since my setup is quite bad if I'm being honest... once I get too far down it gets a little harder to keep that tension)

And here it is with another one I did off the pins! I gave one to my roommate and we'll be using them as bookmarks ^.^

So with Joann going under and as a Fashion/Costume Designer and a cosplayer I need a place to get fabric and notions, and I know many others feel lost as well

So I made a short simple list of online fabric stores as well as notions .

Please share with anyone you would like. If you have recommendations of things to add please let me know.

There's only a few right now of ones I know and have used

I may add a few niche ones like Silk Baron but I am mainly adding ones with many options and maybe add a niche section later

More places with trims would be nice, or even patterns, historical, cosplay, or everyday.

I'll also share this for those who prefer to shop in person:

The subreddit r/sewing has been making a master list of non-Joann or Hobby Lobby fabric stores!

If you know any to add to either list, please do so.

Getting back into knitting can I have recs for inexpensive yarn that doesn't unfurl with every stitch

i can't reply/dm since you don't follow me so i'll stick it in a reblog:

dollar tree sometimes has decent acrylic yarn (reasonably soft but does pill pretty badly for anything that gets a lot of use or friction), many scratchy acrylics can soften w a few washes once it's knit into something (big red etc).

i would probably avoid anything cotton since it tends to split pretty badly and can be rough on the hands, wool holds itself together nicely but costs more & allergies are a factor. are you buying irl or online? what items are you trying to make or what yarn weights do you want to get?

Omg thank you, I was leaning towards acrylics and wool (probably not cotton) to make blankets mostly. I'm using big red right now but it's so messy but it could be because I haven't knitted in years so I'm messing up.

I can buy irl or online I'm going to Joanne's and Micheal's this weekend but if there's an online place that's cool too. I'm wanting to practice from thinner to thicker yarn weights but right now I'm on thinner ones to get back into the hang of knitting.

I second this and if you're going to Joanns, I definitely recommend big twist over red heart or caron for a cheap acrylic personally. I've found it much easier to work with in my crochet projects and it's a lot softer without as much splitting, though I haven't knit with it yet so ymmv there (but I am also learning to knit right now and using a mandala brand yarn I think? I lost the label and bought it like two years ago also at a Joanns and it's been working really nicely and has some good color changes. I originally made some baby blankets with it and it looks really nice for those as well).

caved and decided i really wanted to learn bobbin lace so i went out and bought some ball point pens for bobbins and then a pillow from the thrift store (i already have thread and sewing pins thank god) so once i get some cardboard which i plan on just recycling from a package i'm getting this week or maybe just using like one of the food boxes i have idk yet and wash the pillow i can see about printing smth off as a sampler and trying it out...

trying knitting again and i figured out how to purl finally but also i'm using wood needles instead of metal ones like i've used in the past and i'm enjoying the experience so much more. i did not like how much the yarn slid on metal needles and the wood ones just help keep my stitches in place a lot better... i really just want to learn to make socks and maybe a few sweaters someday but i'm also open to whatever catches my fancy. right now i'm just doing a scarf in stockinette to get the hang of how to hold my needles and yarn and to use up an old yarn cake i had no other use for that was leftover from those baby blankets i made a few years ago so that's awesome too.
