The Leviathan Company Session 11
Let me preface this by explaining that I've been mostly refreshing my memory by reading up on a set of notes on what happened each session, and these notes are inconsistent about details. The Payday 2 session had a play-by-play of most of the heist, meanwhile session 10 was a single sentence. Therefore, I may miss out important details, and I am sorry about that. One of these important details is that Anakiir hired the bard Anakiir as a one-night stand, and he just decided to tag along with us.
Since we never got to finish off the vampire, we accepted a job from King Johan II to investigate a city called Xocnar.
So, they go to the city to find it covered in fog. They get to the inn and meet a disturbing innkeeper named Howard. The moment we first laid eyes on him, we had a feeling that he was involved with whatever was wrong here. No specific reason beyond his uneasy demeanor. He says to us, "you know, you shouldn’t stay out late after dark, people tend to go missing near the docks. Maybe you should rent a room, and stay here, where it’s safe, at the inn" in a voice that struggles to sound human.
Then, at night, spooky shit started happening. We freaked out, and asked Howard what the deal was. He had no clue what was happening, but his duty was with his customers (us) so he didn't care. The next morning, the Innkeeper explains that the people he had last year disappeared, typically near the docks at night.
So, we investigated and found footprints heading back to sea. The plan was to wait until night and figure things out. So, night came, and the party sees shadowy figures with bulging eyes, heading to a cave. What were they doing? Was there a shadow over innsmouth Xocnar? We followed them into the cave, and the interior with dotted with what appeared to be watching eyes, a central lake, and a high ceiling.
The figures start chanting over the corpses of some missing townsfolk, so Anakiir tries fireballing them. He failed, and dread consumed him as the eyes on the wall turned their gaze to him. As if on cue, the lake glows as something unknowable rises from its waters. So, Anakiir shakes off as much dread as he could and illuminates the cave, blinding the bulging eyes of the Kuo-Toa around us. Then, Ivan throws a molotov to destroy one of their altars.
Andthus, combat started. Most of the party fought 3 Kuo Toa while Ivan fought against one who caught him in a mancatcher. Anakiir used a screaming sword, Zeta hit a chanting Kuo-Toa with a crossbow bolt, but it pushed it out with dark magic, and it makes tentacles emerge from its back. While the fight rages on, Marvin's bag starts glowing. Zeta pierced a javelin through a Kuo-Toa's body, but it just becomes tentacles. Then, Ivan blinds the remaining fish-jackasses.
Eventually, an unidentifiable being emerges from the waters. This newborn God tries to pull Marvin from his bag, and the being that was once a fish eats it. Marvin begins glowing, and the Kuo Toa chant. They wanted to usher in a new God, and one has been born then--not by their hands, but through the whim of a joke. As Marvin ascends, the cave collapses, so the party leaves. As they do so, Anakiir takes one last look at the god of his own making, and he gives the proudest smile he has ever made.
I always assumed Kuo-Toa "creating gods" was the fishmen being delusional zealots. When we reached the cave and the Kuo-Toa were actually apotheosising an eldritch horror, it was a rude awakening.
The Leviathan Company Session 8
We got some dogs and Lily finally got a job for her organization. It involved stealing a bunch of diamonds from a jewelry store, and we could use that for a mass-revival spell. Anakiir had to go for a bit, and he gave us explicit instructions not to do a crime.
So, we turned DND into Payday 2.
Here's the plan: First, the team would need codenames.
Dar would be Dallas
Lily would be Hoxton
Ivan would be Chains
and Zeta would be Wolf. I will be using these names for the description of the heist, so pay attention.
First, Hoxton would negotiate with a local gang (I forget why, maybe for resources?) Next, Wolf would go to the far side of town and empty out the Bag of Infinite Gerbils he got at some point to cause a distraction. This would be Dallas, Hoxton, and Chains' cue to enter the store, and start holding it up. By the time Wolf gets back, they would have cracked into the cellar to access the goods.
However, when the gang tried to escape, they encountered a rather large guard wearing what seemed to be a skull mask. Lily cast an invisibility spell so we could sneak past, but then we encountered another guard, and we drop invisibility and have to fight the two guards off.
There were two guards and a wizard at the beginning of the fight, which we'll be calling the medic, the taser, and the dozer. The taser repeatedly casted a lightning spell on us, the dozer hit hard and soaked up damage (though, he was preoccupied fighting Wolf), and the medic healed any guard who got hurt. We took down the medic first, then Hoxton took down the taser with a lightning spell of her own. Then, it was down to the dozer.
Wolf tried to deal lasting damage to the guard, but it was all like a mosquito bite to him. In fact, one of his handaxes SHATTERED against his armor. Fortunately for Wolf, he found a weakness: the dozer's mask isn't as heavily armored as the rest of his body. So, Wolf started aiming for the mask, which cracked like an egg. At this point, the Dozer called for backup, but Dallas destroyed his sending stone. Unfortunately for us, backup still came.
The Cloaker arrived. The bane of all heisters. A soldier who can knock any foe to the ground in a single dropkick. And he knew how to dropkick. Once Wolf finished the dozer off, all eyes were on the cloaker, who we took down.
After that was dealt with, we booked it, victorious.
Lily negotiated with the local gang because the store we wanted to rob was on their turf, and we needed their permission lest we incite a gang-war.
The Leviathan Company: Session 7
We enter the big city of Phandulin and make some necessary purchases (and prevent Lily from buying yet another slave). At the Inn, Dar gets drunk and tells his backstory (which I'll be copy-pasting from what his player wrote):
Dar was born in the wild country of Tirfain, the second son of a powerful nobleman named Derlad MakLadir. Dar spent his boyhood training in the ways of war and the hunt; his father teaching him swordsmanship, boxing, horsemanship and strategy along with stalking, tracking and trapping. He also learned the legends and histories of his country, which he could recite by heart, and was also taught the lore of beasts and nature.
As a lad, he was a feisty and spirited youth and thus his father bestowed upon him the title of "Kunon" (little wolf). Dar would go on to make a name for himself as a warrior and huntsman, as was the custom in that country. He fought many a victorious battle and slew many a vicious beast. He won much glory and was greatly respected by his clan and terribly feared by his enemies. He gathered around himself a band of brave and loyal warriors and that band had many an adventure and few in Tirfain accomplished as many feats as they. Dar's closest companion was Niall Veros, who was also his lover and they were almost inseparable companions. For years Dar enjoyed a mirthful and glorious life, until one day when all turned ill.
While fighting a battle in the Eastmarches of Tirfain, Dar lead his men into a reckless charge and his company was slain to the man. All were killed save Dar. Seeing his comrades butchered before him, he was filled with wrath and slaughtered his foes and all before him were slain. The battle proved to be a victory, but for Dar that day was naught but grim.
Mourning the death of his companions and ashamed and guilt ridden for having led them unto doom, Dar left his beloved homeland and became a sellsword and a bounty-man. He wandered the wide world, hiring on with various mercenary companies and selling his services to the highest bidder as a bounty-hunter. For five years he roved and fought and in that time he built up an impressive reputation. He became infamous, reknowned as a skilled warrior, but reviled as a black-hearted brute. In that time he committed many a black deed, kept going by nothing but guilt and rage. He cared for no one and no one cared for him.
(I copy pasted his backstory from a doc his player sent to me to serve as an mini-wiki for the campaign)
Touched by his story, we decided our next plan of action would be to find a way to bring back his friends and lover. Before the session ends, however, we get hired by a rich lady to escort her to a masquerade ball.
I sure hope no shenanigans ensue whilst the party is serving as an escort!
