Chapters 8-10/10

“You ready Maxy girl?” Daniel asks.

Max nods. Daniel puts her hand on Max’s chin and tips her head back. She’s immediately aware of every single nerve ending where Daniel’s hand rests along her throat, thumb on her chin. Every single one of those nerve endings sing and Max does the only thing she can. She opens her mouth for Daniel to pour the champagne into her mouth. Daniel brings the shoe to her lips and she swallows the disgusting, foot tasting champagne and knows she’d do it 100 times again to feel this alive, even if it means coming in second place.

When Daniel takes the shoe away and removes her hand from Max, it takes all of her willpower not to chase Daniel down and ask her to do it again.

The Rules

After Max wins the Games, they take his blood, give him a saline drip, and drop him into the victors’ lounge for an hour. They want him weak, they want the other victors to smell his blood.

Max stacks his spine and clenches his fists but no one comes. Like an unspoken agreement, everyone stays in their rooms. Eventually he lets himself sit on the sofa. The cushion sinks into a memory, into the shape of other butts before his. It’s something used, the first used thing he’s felt in a while, and it makes him feel fuzzy and sleepy. There’s a little origami duck on the seat beside him. Someone’s written ‘it will be ok’ on its wing.
