On Transphobia in Fandom

i think a lot of this discussion about transphobia in the fandom reminds me of christmas growing up (i know, i know, but stay with me, i'm making a point, i promise)

i remember growing up and being taught ALL sorts of things my brother wasn't. things about cooking and cleaning, things about grocery shopping and holiday prep work. i remember spending hours in the kitchen at the holidays to make christmas memories for people older than me!

and i remember all the men around me thinking those things just... happened. Popped up like christmas magic! or, if they did spare a second to consider the women who made the holiday happen, it was only ever just that. A second of thought to our hours of work. All this invisible labor that was taken for granted by the men in our lives, the kind of work they only ever noticed when we didn't do it.

i think about this a lot when i'm seeing cis people tell trans people they've never seen the transphobia in this space. i'm thinking about how little of it i've seen in comparison to what i know is out there. i'll be so real, i have never, with my own eyes, seen a creator be deadnamed, seen someone leave true 'we don't want you here' hate speech, literally tell someone off. I only ever see discussions about those things after the fact.

but i don't think that's because it doesn't exist! I think that's because all the trans creators I follow have been busting their ass to make sure i don't see it. they've been deleting and blocking, and curating safe and helpful spaces (not for me, mind you, for the young queers in their comments, for the people just starting to come to terms with themselves who Do Not need to see that shit)

my point is this, just because You aren't doing the work, doesn't mean the work isn't being done.

thinking about post-prank bitchkiller again ugh. thinking about how barty would see it before sirius does: that this is just a phase for him, something he's going through - that once sirius' friends accept him back, he isn't going to talk to barty anymore, he isn't going to want to fuck in empty classrooms where they could get caught anymore, he isn't going to want to fly drunk on his broom or experiment with potions to see how fucked up they can get anymore. sirius' increasingly violent self-destructiveness is the product of a temporary circumstance, nothing more. but this is barty's life, this is the way he's always been, and he has been tricked into thinking he found someone who understood it. that is humiliating. he can see this even when sirius can't, and so he begins to resent sirius, all while clinging more and more desperately onto him because he knows it's fleeting. it's going to end - sirius is going to go back to a more normal and much healthier version of himself, and barty is going to be stuck like this, forever. the only thing he can do is try to yank sirius so far down that he doesn't remember how to climb back up.

trans regulus' periods are regular and exact like a clock, and trans remus' are so messy and irregular his phone app asks him "is it possible you might be pregnant?"

I’m never going to get over my hc that James Peter and Barty were all really close as kids, but specifically James and Barty. They were both chaotic and energetic, Barty loved Effie and Monty and he spent as much time as he could at the Potter’s. Then James went off to Hogwarts and met Sirius, barely wrote to Barty the whole year, and then got home only to spend the whole summer talking about his new friends. Barty, who had just spent the last several months either being yelled at by his father or completely ignored without his only friends was, understandably, pissed. But he was still holding out hope. When he gets to Hogwarts he ends up in Ravenclaw and quickly discovers James has no room for him in his exciting new life. So when Barty first meets Sirius’ little brother he hates his guts, until he realizes Regulus is just like him, he was abandoned too.

one time a professor asked me if i’d ever wanted to write anything “more important” than romance. and i said no. i was put on this earth to write about sad people kissing. and if another writer ever came up to me and said they wanted to write 400 pages containing nothing but a character baking a single loaf of bread each day, then i would tell them to do that. people don't write something because it's important. they write about something and that is what makes it important
