A year in review! What I found interesting putting this together is that some months I barely drew at all, and some other months I drew so much I had a hard time picking a favorite to put here.

Some of these have been posted, some haven't. I'm very inconsistent with posting and that is something I want to do better with in 2024. (also it'd make dating pieces much easier for this) Template from Katha.

comments under any httyd movie content be like "HEY disney take notes, this is how you do a live action!!!" how about no one does any live action ever again

"but the original director made it" "but it's a frame by frame replica of the original" stop making a fool of yourself

☝️☝️☝️

This!!

"It's a frame by frame replica of the original" ok so watch the original then. why did you need them to remake it. was there something wrong with the originals art? no? it looked good? it was a masterpiece? then why the fuck did you want a live action remake.

I can now officially share the artwork I made for @dcpridefanzine! I was so excited I got to work as a pin-up artist for this zine. I drew Traci 13 as she's one of my faves who doesn't often get much of a spotlight. I really wanted to do something with her concept of "urban magic" and visualize her magic in a fun way! The zine is free for everyone to read on the 24th! Go check it out! There are a lot of awesome comics and art, it's a whole fan-made DC Pride special!

Contrary to popular belief the biggest beginner's roadblock to art isn't even technical skill it's frustration tolerance, especially in the age of social media. It hurts and the frustration is endless but you must build the frustration tolerance equivalent to a roach's capacity to survive a nuclear explosion. That's how you build on the technical skill. Throw that "won't even start because I'm afraid it won't be perfect" shit out the window. Just do it. Just start. Good luck.

I'm getting jumped in the notes here with "easier said than done" and that's true, so I am by NO MEANS a professional with professional-level art off the top of my head here's some tangible things to help with your frustration tolerance.

  1. It never goes away. Like. Literally ever. "It's so hard and I keep stumbling over it" yeah. Never goes away. For anyone. Keep that in mind.
  2. While you do have to train your eye to get better at drawing, which means you have to look at good art, you also have to stop only looking at artwork made by professionals or people who've been doing it longer than you. Jealous of another 21-year-old whose art is better than you? Block or mute. Lol. It doesn't matter who cares. Jealousy is ugly and you should work on that but feelings like that don't just go away and so if it's not hurting anyone just get that out of your sight. Unblock/mute when you're in a better headspace.
  3. If you can't keep your drawings to yourself then have a dedicated set of artist friends to complain with or hold each other accountable. Preferably people of your same skill level. And no I don't mean a huge discord server full of randos, like, your actual friends, chances are you're only going to get your feelings hurt if in you're some huge buttfuck discord server where people are busy doing god knows what and they either ignore your posts or just leave reacts.
  4. What actually helps ease this is by practicing in bulk. Everyone tells you art is like a muscle and you have to train it constantly, with rest, but constantly. And what this means realistically is you're more likely to learn by drawing something repetitively. Say you're struggling to draw a profile. Don't waste hours getting one drawing of a profile right. If it sucks just start over again. Repeat. Literally the fastest and most efficient way with almost every drawing roadblock is just start over again. The time will pass anyways etc etc.
  5. Confidence is won through effort! Confidence is not so much a feeling as it is the cumulative result of the work you put in. (I read this on reddit one time and never forgot it.)

6. This is a really tough one but you'll have to substitute motivation for discipline.

7. I mean. You don't have to be good at art man. It's fine. You do have to weigh in how much you actually want to get to a certain skill level and weigh it against the amount of effort you're willing to put in. If you're fine where you are that's fine!!! It's fine!!!

Nearly 14,000 Nevada voters must verify their identity with election officials to cure the signature on their mail-in ballots or their votes won’t count in what was expected to be a close presidential race, according to the secretary of state.

The deadline for voters to cure their ballots is 5 p.m. Nov. 12, officials said. [. . .]

Ballots need to be cured if the signature on file with the elections department doesn’t match, or if the voter failed to sign their mail ballot.

When there is a signature issue, the Clark County Election Department notifies voters by telephone, email, and U.S. mail. The phone call from Clark County will come from 702-455-8683, officials said.

Officials urge voters to check if their ballot was accepted by using the state's online tool.

Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.

This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)

If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!

Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...

Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!

You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!

Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!

ALSO!!

YELLOWING!! Digital art is very blue-light based. Cold, clean, flat. But traditional art has warmth to it. Why?

Over time, paper gets yellowed with dust, oil, dirt, and nicotine from cigarettes! So colors got warmer. This makes art look pretty aged, on top of the slight toned papers and hand made/factory made inks they printed with.

YES! YES!! THANK YOU FOR THE SCIENCE!

A lot of knowing your traditional materials goes into making digital art, too!

It's also great to learn the methods, shortcuts, workaround, and materials used all those years ago to familiarize yourself with them and also... it's pretty freakin' neat-o
