Little ramble about Chuckles and Rett and their potential dynamic (this one isn't negative this time I promise lmao)
I think the contrast between Chuckles and Rett wasn't explored very much and I have some ideas for it.
I have this idea that Chuckles suffers from toxic positivity. It's in his nature to spread joy, but then there's also that expectation to ALWAYS be responsible for everyone's happiness and trying to keep up a positive side. Even if he's depressed and exhausted he'll force himself to try to be funny for others. He puts on a fake smile, even if he really doesn't feel like having one.
Maybe Rett had always had this one sided perception of Chuckles and doesn't understand how he can just be happy all the time and wonders why he can't take things seriously. Rett is more reserved and doesn't often express a playful side. He really really loves 80s pop music but will only listen to it alone. So from Chuckles' perspective he wonders if Rett can even be happy and thinks he's kind of a bore and killjoy.
With that established, you could play with the idea of them both seeing a different side that the other hadn't truely seen before.
Maybe Rett catches Chuckles reaching his limit and crying because he's emotionally burnt himself out. Rett finds out that he ISN'T happy all the time and sometimes he's faking it. The new insight into Chuckles gives him a different feeling about him. He lets Chuckles know he doesn't need to pretend to be happy around him.
And on the flip side Chuckles finds Rett singing to a cheesy goofy 80s song and Chuckled is surprised Rett is capable of being silly. Rett is embarrassed he was caught goofing off and being "weird." But Chuckles expresses that it's okay to have "embarrassing" interests and that being silly builds resilience in tough times. Too much stress on the brain isn't productive and it's okay to take a break from it.
And it they still struggle to understand each other but the new insight helps build a better relationship with each other
