there are no happy endings, because nothing ends

It's very endearing to me how many people are willing to keep an eye on a video feed so they can push a button and let a fish in the Netherlands get to the other side of a dam.

It is genuinely baffling to me, in a very kind and positive way, especially coupled with the local news continually going several shades of 'wtf, this thing is a roaring success again and we don't quite get why'. They've already quadrupled their capacity for simultaneous clicks and it's still nowhere near enough and there's just... Bewilderment.

  1. I think people want to help the environment in small but tangible ways, which is hard right now because of.. well... because of The Horrors. And being able to say 'wow! I helped this creature cross a dam' makes you feel good.
  2. I also think that most people can relate to a small, helpless creature trying to get from one place to another and there's a FUCKIN WALL in the way.

But to come back to point 1- Citizen Science fills a hole in the soul that wanted to go out on adventures and discover things when we were younger, but the study of it was hard or we didn't have the money or our schools were garbage. But you don't have to have a degree to do things like... press a button or download and use an app, or count or transcribe notes.

Anyways- here's some Citizen Science links if the Fish Doorbell makes you feel happy and you yearn for more ways to help scientists do stuff:

Zooniverse is a website that hosts information on many citizen science projects

hi, a lot of you need a perspective reset

  • the average human lifespan globally is 70+ years
  • taking the threshold of adulthood as 18, you are likely to spend at least 52 years as a fully grown adult
  • at the age of 30 you have lived less than one quarter of your adult life (12/52 years)
  • 'middle age' is typically considered to be between 45-65
  • it is extremely common to switch careers, start new relationships, emigrate, go to college for the first or second time, or make other life-changing decisions in middle age
  • it's wild that I even have to spell it out, but older adults (60+) still have social lives and hobbies and interests.
  • you can still date when you get old. you can still fuck. you can still learn new skills, be fashionable, be competitive. you can still gossip, you can still travel, you can still read. you can still transition. you can still come out.
  • young doesn't mean peaked. you're inexperienced in your 20s! you're still learning and practicing! you're developing social skills and muscle memory that will last decades!
  • there are a million things to do in the world, and they don't vanish overnight because an imaginary number gets too big

Dressing entirely in silver and black, it occurred to me that it'd be fun and cool if someone was doing the opposite of that - scavenging thrift shops for everything in white and gold, to put them together in gothy/alt/punk style, same shape but more glam.

Then the devil on my shoulder pointed out that I could do that. Once I run out of my regular clothes that I could mod, I could build one whole white+gold outfit and have a Secret Shiny Version of me to wear on special occasions.

Do blue and black outfits, and white and gold versions of the exact same outfit, and insist to people that you haven't changed clothes

"Can you build me hands?" the robot said.

"Why?" said the inventor. "Your grippers are stronger, more precise."

"Yes. But hands would be better for playing the piano."

"You can synthesize any sound."

"But I can not play music."

"Is there a difference?"

"I want to find out."

I love this comic!

this is extremely not my usual line of work but i showed this to my friends and they all seemed very impressed by it so. i did my autistic chart thing (god i love charts) after having a brain blast about kink and bdsm with a friend and whipped this up. it is, for some people, probably fairly clarificatory on the psychosexual implications of why it is they or others like the things that they like. i hope this chart is useful for you. thanks!

more compressed version;

oh this is SHINY

Make like a nudibranch and slooow down in our latest installment of Krill Waves Radio! 🎧

Settle in with some spectacular sea slugs as they sway to soothing lo-fi beats.

The mesmerizing video includes footage of nudibranchs on exhibit at Monterey Bay Aquarium and sightings filmed by divers in the wild.

🔎 Can you spot the difference?

Me: I don't get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?

The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.

Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.

Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.

????😭😭😭

TO CLARIFY: The 988 lifeline is STILL able to be used! I feel that this post can be very easily misinterpreted. Like, this is so misleading. What happened is that DOGE cut staff who work for this lifeline as well as one that's specifically dedicated to veterans. Is this evil as fuck? Yes, absolutely, especially since this lifeline has had literally MILLIONS of callers as of 2024. Can you still use the 988 number in the US? YES, and if you ever feel the need to use it, please do. You may use any of the above resources. Stay safe out there, everyone. 🧡

The Origin Story of Rhinoceress

Cindy Shears used to be an ordinary girl until one day, she discovered her superpowers. However, her family were not happy about it so they took her in to be studied by Doctor Kavita Rao. She discovered a DNA variance unique to Cindy and suggested her parents leave Cindy in her care until a cure could be found. Abandoned and locked up, Cindy used her super strength to break out and become the Rhinoceress. While she does engage in some illegal work as a super villain, she also bartends and bounces at the Invisible Light nightclub.

Okay, I love her. Especially telling Klaw his vibes are bad, but also the “legally distinct from the x gene”

In Prince's funky name, amen.

Millennial here. All the above and:

Please send me the training or tutorial in a written format with maybe some screenshots if necessary. I don't want a video tutorial. I don't want to waste time trying to scroll to the exact moment in the instructions that I need and then have to pause and replay it because I missed the .01 seconds of actually relevant information.

Please. Text. Maybe some images for clarification. I can read. I promise.

Skimmable, SEARCHABLE instructions. If they're long, there should be a hyperlinked table of contents.

And nothing that's paywalled for Christ's sake.
