I'm Sparkles and I'm so glad you're here! This is purely a Dragon Age blog but my likes are also visible if you want to see what else I'm into. My pronouns are she/her or whatever works. I'm in the Central Time Zone.

I got a lot done this week, multiple illustrations for my fic (and one that's not actually an illustration but uh, 👀) Plus, I put out chapter 3 of my fic today!

SO, here we go:

Chapter 3 of the Viscount's Bride, an AU fic set after DA2 (but Inquisition never happened), featuring the Viscount of Kirkwall, Varric Tethras, getting into an arranged marriage with a girl from the Carta, one Darvia Cadash.

If you've seen this before it's because I posted this last Saturday and I'm still shamelessly proud of both my work and my post/cover. I was tagged by @thedissonantverses, @bubblecat-co, @notyourmamasdeerbat I wasn't gonna repost this today because I didn't wanna bother anyone with my work again, but that's what Shameless Self-Promotion is all about.

Long before Varric Tethras gave her the name Rook, Veryl Ingellvar was just another body amongst those that served in the Mourn Watch. Under the cover of darkness she served whims and circumvented chaos. Her role was legendary and never more than a mere rumor. Before she was known as Rook, she was never known to be The Spectre of the Grand Necropolis.

Hello, Hello! Sparkles here to tell you about a fic you might like! There are currently 6 chapters available at 25k words. I try to update every week but I'm writing as I go and sometimes life gets in the way of the one joy I have in life. What you can expect (not tropes, just the facts):

🔎 A Psych-esq Mystery Dynamic 🔍🍍 🌝 Multiple original characters to love or hate 🌝 💀 Quirky Necropolis Horrors 💀 💚 A completely made up version of the Mourn Watch Order 💜 ❗️Nobody is dead that isn't supposed to be - yet❗️

This fic does fall under the EmmRook ship, and Emmrich will play a big role in later chapters. It is a slow burn however and the relationship serves as a device for character development and exploration of the world. Will there be smut? Maybe? Currently, it's rated T for language and a gratuitous amount of blood 🙆‍♀️ Read all available chapters now on ao3

Today we have Illario/Nyx stuff. Though it's bad timeline, AKA canon timeline. Which means they don't stay together ;o;

“I can’t heal you if we’re kissing,” Nyx chastised him gently, even if he knew it was a futile fight. If Illario wanted to kiss him, then he was getting kissed. He could never say no to the man. Not now, not ever. Illario had him in a vice grip, and Nyx found he had no desire to escape it. “Yes you can,” Illario complained before he broke out into a devious smirk, “do the thing.” Nyx scoffed in response, his own smile widening when he realized that Illario had remembered his little trick. Which, of course he did. He always latched onto the different things Nyx could do, encouraging him and admiring each talent as if they were his own. He didn’t resist when Illario tugged him the rest of the way and their lips met. Nyx’s focus instantly shifted as he called on his mana and concentrated it towards his head. It wasn’t something he could often, but for Illario he’d do it a million times over. His eyes fluttered closed as his mouth began to glow a soft purple and Nyx quickly reached around Illario to cup at the back of his head where the wound was. Just for a little boost of healing. Once the wound was sufficiently mended along with whatever other bruises and abrasion Illario picked up during the scuffle, Nyx dropped his magic with a deep breath out against Illario’s mouth. The man immediately deepened the kiss, tongue slipping into Nyx’s mouth and earning a small whimper from him. As their tongues worked together, Illario settled his other hand on Nyx’s waist and pushed on him gently. Nyx immediately broke away from his lover and stared down at him with hooded eyes.

after a month of weird writer's block i managed to update my ongoing illario/rook fic, roots planted in my skin <- read on ao3, rating: explicit

it's set in my illario/rook series, but i do think it can be read on its' own if you go in with the knowledge that rook (bea) and illario are, at this point in time, exes, and on a journey to getting back together. also my friend's rook Ayden is here as an additional member of House De Riva.

there's crow politics, complicated family relationships, smut, and as of this week illario yearning in epistolary format, with bonus lucanis/nonbinary OC as a background pairing. we're currently sitting at 16,736 words for 3 out of 5 planned chapters.

There are a few things I've been working on this week:

Tooth and Nail A post-canon mystery/romance exploring the relationship between a Shadow Dragon Rook and Thread boss Neve. Set mostly in Minrathous, it's got murder, political intrigue, fluff, and of course, angst. I just posted chapter six today, and have a lot more planned for this one.

This is something I was supposed to finish for the first day of VG Appreciation Week, but got distracted with the aforementioned fic. That's how it goes sometimes, lol.

I continue to make gifsets of my beloveds.

So for this past week I got one fic updated and another finished.

The first one was the second to last chapter of There Used to be Five of Us. The fic is about the family dynamics between my Hawke, Elizabeth and each one of her family members, with this most recent chapter being about her. You can find it on AO3 or on this blog. Warning, this fic, and this chapter, are sad.

On fluffier note, I also posted a Fenris/Hawke fic, Midnight Picnic. It's just a little over 1k, it's very sweet and its basically Hawke and Fenris going on a little date. It was like, the break from all the sadness of the other fic that I needed. Once again, you can find it on AO3 or read it on tumblr.

This week and next week are job!busy in brain-draining ways (a clean set of footnotes for someone else's book doesn't really sound like it counts as something I've "created" for this exercise), so things have slowed down on the writing front. But that doesn't mean I've stopped! Here's a fun snippet of my double fake married fic. I'm leaning into the White Lotus vibe, and basically rifling through DA canon for spare change. (Among other heresies, Hawke is the Viscount of Kirkwall's assistant, essentially, and Sera is resort staff)

A gentle rap on the door was Sera returning with the food. Rook busied herself with opening up cases while she listened to the clink of metal and fine china in the front room. “Hey, now.” Varric’s tone had warning in it. Rook poked her head out of the bedroom. This probably wasn’t a situation that required backup, but it was impossible to be too careful. Sera was standing in the middle of the room, twisting her hands together and looking about to cry. “I’m very sorry, my lord. I—.” Varric raised his palms. “Hey, no, no, you’ve got it wrong, kid. You can have the sandwich. You probably need it more than I do. Just, we’ve gotta work on your form. The lift was good, but I was looking right at you when you pocketed it.” Sera, still trembling, gawked at him. “What?” “Yeah, I know, you’re used to people paying no attention to the staff. That’s only gonna work until it doesn’t, though. Hey, Garrett.” Hawke finished setting a handful of Varric’s underclothes in a drawer and sidled past Rook into the main room. “What’s up?” “Do me a favor and show this girl the ropes, will you? I want her robbing me blind by the end of the week.” Hawke, who had complained repeatedly in the past few months, including on the drive over from the airport, that there was never anything to do at big posh resorts, grinned. “Here, show me what you did.” Varric sauntered back into the bedroom and handed Rook a couple of tiny sandwiches. “She’s got good instincts. A little practice and she’ll be destined for way better things than this place.”
