Ever since I read a book on fieldwork in Ethiopia’s volcanic regions that described insects turning into stone before the geologist’s eyes demonstrating a sort of instant fossilisation in a silica rich volcanic hot spring, I have been searching for a decent photo of the phenomenon to share this cool story with you.

“Icy mirrors, fiery roses, ambiguous grace. December arrives, bleeding and cruel.”

Georges Rodenbach, from “Clouds of Light, in a Diamond Mist,” wr. c. 1880

"Why did you tell me you kissed the earth I walked on? You have to kill me! I am so tired. To rest! To rest! I am a seagull! I am a seagull. I am a seagull. No, that's not it. I am an actress. Yes, that's it. He's there too. Yes. But that's nothing. He didn't believe in theater, he always used to mock my dreams, and I ended up not believing in them either, I lost my courage! And then the turmoils of love, the jealousy, the constant fear for my little one. I was becoming petty, insignificant, my acting was stupid! I didn't know what to do with my hands, didn't know how to stand! I couldn't control my voice! You don't know what it feels like. Learn to carry your cross and keep your faith. I have the faith, and I suffer. When I think about my vocation, say: life doesn't scare me anymore."

Favorite scene adapting Chekhov's The Seagull in L'amour braque (1985) dir. Andrzej Żuławski.
