MTG Ramblings: Lands & Assumptions
I believe that both we the audience & the in universe Planeswalkers don't really know the true existent of magic or the lay lines that run through every Plane, so every Planeswalker will have there own theory's & names for mana, and where it comes from, its just that we were introduced through Alpha so we stick to what we know.
Personally I see it as all the potential energy of a location that could be collected/used in one amount of time/turn, Planes have the light & warmth of the sun and the growth fields of grains, grasses or other such that don't fall into Green's domain.
Islands have the flow of the water the pulling of the current from the moon & the creatures that swim within it.
Swamps have the decay fueling the growth of other plants or whatever dwells there.
Red... Yes the volcanos speak for themselves but also landslides & the movement of tectonic plates,
And Green's forests and the color's ability to grow out of control with the highest ramp of the colors should speak it for itself. (As well as Green's ability to produce mana of other colors)
It's the non-colored that are more interesting, they are cities, ruins or lands where not even the dead dwell (Bazaar of Baghdad, Scorched Ruins & Field of the Dead)... Or places so obscure that not even the colors have defined those places (Sheltered Valley, Winding Canyons & Rath's Edge) can produce mana that is ether so mixed together that cannot be separated into it's individual colors, or create a new type of mana.
With the Izzet mapping the multiverse threw the Omenpaths, I would like a character interviewing others plane by plane, each native explaining how they see each of the basic lands & what makes them so.
Is the land itself necessary, or just the Idea of the land? We have scene great & terrible things along our journey through the Blind Enteritis, so is there a land of pure blue mana? Mabey, but it would be so perfect that it would destroy us if we ever try and tap into it.. But Tolarian Academy is dame close, no wonder it keeps getting attacked.
Continuing the Pirate AU fanart of TheLoadingCrew's character's. "Princess Hime" from The Complete Waifu Handbook, just wanted to draw another pirate girl and used a existing character that is connected to another character as the base.
Some AU fanart of TheLoadingCrew's character "Faith" from The Complete Waifu Handbook, just wanted to draw a pirate girl and used a existing character design as the base.
A commission from Discord of "Hana' & "Kabby" fighting over a pore ArtofWar's character Zurdan, all characters from TheLoadingCrew's "Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords" campaign.
This is to Uncle Sam, if he is still taking questions. Liberty Belle got her powers from the actual liberty bell & 'powers up' when the bell is struck, are there any other Colonial American historical items that are used as magical conduits? And is she technically channeling you when she used her powers?
US: How fitting considering what we just talked about. Me: This question will come out on the next day, but yes. US: Libby Lawrence was a wonderful woman, I should say. That woman's righteous indignation for the sake of others could burn white hot. I have seen her give enemies and politicians alike a look that could melt through a bank vault. Me: She is on record as the only woman who could get Johnny Quick to shut his trap US: Sometimes with blunt trauma to the head, but yes. Me: So to reiterate? US: Ah, yes, so we talked 'yesterday', only about 10 minutes for us, about Betsy Ross and Molly Pitcher, two young ladies who acted as sidekicks for Ms America in the late 40s Me: And the spool of thread taken from the historical Betsy Ross and the pitcher from the 'historical' Molly Pritcher that they used to gain superhuman abilities. US: Right, perfect example right there. Me: And the other question? US: No, so much as both her abilities and mine are both outgrowth of the same root. I keep explaining to folks that I'm not the SOURCE of the American spirit, they are. That being the American public at large. Me: I'll admit, the source of Lawrence's abilities have always been something that baffled my field since there really is no physical explanation for any of it. US: I hate to just shrug and say "magic" because I don't think of what I do or what I am as particularly arcane but that's about the best way to sum it up.
I was less informed when I asked that question, and have learned several other things so should have worded by question better.
One is that she was able to power up by ringing the 'Mexican Liberty Bell'/El Grito de Independencia that one time, So I assume that as long as it is bell shaped, could be rung, and being believe it to be a symbol of freedom it could be a viable 'power up' for her.
Also she did get the ability to admit ultra sonic waves, but we still don't know if that is from the Liberty Bell being struck by lighting again, or a side effect of Barron Blitzkrieg trying to steal her powers.
Until proven otherwise I will assume that any culturally important artifact can and will bestow powers given some circumstance....
MTG Ramblings Split Cards & Remixes
Split cards, originally designed for 'Unglued 2' but appearing in the game during 'Invasion block', are an odd mechanic, as they aren't really a mechanic, but simply wo cards printed side by side on one physical card. They give players a choice on what to use there cards for, a better version of this would be the Spree mechanic from 'Outlaws of Thunder Junction'. They have had new mechanics of there own added to them thought the years, most notable the Fuse mechanic allowing both sides to be played at one, or the After math mechanic that allowed one half to be only cast from the Graveyard, and now becoming enchantments with the Rooms in Dustmourn. These are not what I want to talk about today, what I want to tank about is them not remixing the cards.
Each side of a split card is a card in and of itself, so reprints can happen and should happen, yes by todays standers the mechanic is slow but it still has the possibility of being used. The names of split cards are that of '_&_' or ' _to_', but whit what limited split cards we have there are still a few that can be put into this system. Take 'Failure' from 'Failure to Comply' & 'Market' from 'Farm to Market', combining them will have 'Failure to Market', while not as pithy as the former two still works, both mechanically & in color combination. Or have 'Hide' from 'Hide & Seek' and 'Run' from 'Hit & Run' to get 'Run & Hide', both are from multicolor card, one ally one enemy color on each side, but as a single wedge color the card can still work, is it vastly overcoated? Yes, but the possibilities is still there.
And that's not touching on any cards not in a split card that could be put into one, as long as it isn't overly wordy, I had thought of the Split card 'Flourish' from Flower & Flourish' and the lone card 'Thrive' to make 'Flourish & Thrive'.
The following card images are meant for Illustration purposes of my idea:
Some more fanart of TheLoadingCrew's character "Water Sword" & Herse Pokemon setting Counterpart Kiiza/Sequne.
I wanted to show off the physicals differences, while they may be counterparts they still have differences, mostly in the hair. Differentiating the two more I feel that Kiiza would have more developed legs due to the Legendary Beasts being roaming Pokémon, while Water Sword would have more developed arm mussels due to being a blacksmith.
MTG Ramblings Snow Mana & Hybrid Costs
Snow Permanents, first introduced in Ice age with Snow Lands but Snow Creatures & Enchantments in Cold Snap, are a unusual type of super type. Snow Permanents care about there own special type of mana, usually designated with the {S}, it is not a mana type on its own but can only be generated by Snow Lands. For most of its life it has been only used for activation of abilities, as having cards that required Snow Mana as a casting cost and not having any in a draft would suck, but as per usual in Modern Horizens they experimented having two cards that have Snow Mana as there costs, those being Arcum's Astrolabe & Icehide Golem.
This is interesting due to it implying that it is a mana type on its own that requires very specific circumstances to use in creation/summoning of artifacts. The two other 2/2 Artifact Creatures that require 1 Mana are "Reinforced Ronin" while having hast must go back to the hand at the end of your turn, and "Thraben Gargoyle" has Defender that has a high transform cost.
I wonder if that Snow Mana is so obscure among the Plains & so hard to work with that unless you are a true expert that its nearly impossible to work with. That the Mana it's self is so slow & ridged that most magic users carve away the 'Snow' aspect of it to get to the mana they are use to working with underneath, but that if you have the patience that you can create something form the 'Other'. The Existence of the variety of Snow Permanents implies by its timeline that anything can become/be shaped into a Snow card, with Lands being the first to change as they do with the seasons, then the Creatures & the Enchantments they use follow as they adapt to the new environment, then after a time people adapt so now Instant & Sorceries are also now snow as they cold is something to be wielded, and finally Artifacts as one truly understands how Snow Mana works.
But I have to wonder if there is a way to cheat the system, that a thought came to me when panning threw my collection, could snow have hybrid mana? What brought this on was Shadowmore's "Advice from the Fae" & the rest of the Monocolor hybrid cycle, That if you don't have the right colors of mana that you can pump in more mana to make up for that. That forcing a Snow Perinates to be created but causing it to become excused/come out wrong, such as a Artifact that enters the Battlefield tapped unless you payed snow mana to cast it, or Instants that cannot be cast at instant speed or are less powerful unless you pay snow mana for them.
Still missing Snow Enchantment creatures WOTC….
