the most tragic part of conclave that hurts so much more in the book is how much of a death sentence being pope is. throughout the book, lomeli (lawrence) is Constantly lamenting how lonely and awful it would be to be pope, how he would never be able to visit the shops and cafes and streets in rome again, how the late pope was driven into an isolated paranoia because of it, and then it ends with the title being placed onto the kindest soul. what the fuck
