Author of Weeping Gods interactive fiction novel

This tale sweeps you up and drops you back 3500 years into the past, straight onto the banks of the Nile, at the dawn of the Egyptian New Kingdom. The Empire has only been liberated from a hundred year old occupation. The scars left by the war are still healing and yet, threats loom on the horizon again. Some powerful artifacts have been stolen and the king entrusts you with their recovery. Suddenly finding yourself out of your depth and all out of options, you have no choice but to agree to the dangerous mission. You don't know what awaits you on this journey but you know one thing for sure: if you don't catch the enemies of the empire, you will risk more than your own life.

Take your fate into your own hands, solve mysteries, meet new friends, fall in love, learn about magic, monsters, spirits, gods, and have fun in the ancient Egyptian Kingdom in this historical fantasy novel.

The story is a work of fiction and is not historically accurate.

  • Solve mysteries, climb the Great Pyramid of Giza, deal with the sparks of revolution, and help secure the kingdom's future

Warnings: The story will contain heavy and dark themes, excessive swearing, mental health problems, and optional sexual content, so it is recommended for mature audiences only. The whole list of triggering content can be found in the beginning of the demo.

The Romances

Narmer - A kind and patient man with a golden heart, a fierce sense of duty, a bloody past, and way too little free time.

Qenna (m/f) - The living enigma. Fun and casual at first glance, but why is everyone warning you against spending time with them?

Zaia (m/f) - Spends most of their time brooding or hiding from people, but they can be surprisingly cheeky with those they feel comfortable with.

Tabiry - A dependable and loyal woman, she is the type of person you could trust to have your back in any situation.

Ahmose (m/f) - Young and impressionable, with a dazzling smile and too much hope for a better future.

Hi! Here's some little typos and such I have noticed when playing.

There was also one thing in chapter 1 with the priest(ess) origin, when their patron God is Isis, that they notice the High Priestess isn't present during the ceremony, which MC thought she would be, and then in the next paragraph says that their "superior isn't here however, because currently they are participating in the Karnak procession".

And I have really enjoyed reading your story, I'm really looking forward to seeing more! I also really appreciate all the variation there is, especially with how much work it is for you authors. Like, how noble!MC and Ahmose just can't wash the dishes (which makes it pretty funny when it gets brought up that Ahmose destroyed most plates while MC is also responsible for it). And all the different scenes there are in chapter 1, like how Zaia can be the one finding thief!MC.

Anyway, I hope you are having a good day/night!

Thanks for the spots! These are super useful.

I don't know what's going on with the MC's pronouns not capitalizing though. The code is correct for them, so they should be capitalized in the beginning of sentences but I also noticed that sometimes it doesn't happen. I have no idea what's causing it. Did anyone come across something similar before? 😐

hey! I just found what I think is a typo(?)

when you are on the captain!MC route, choose to go to the festival with Heset and answer her with "Hah! I wish" when she talks about grandchildren ⬇️

"Hah! I wish."

She sighs. "Yeah, I wish too."

That makes you frown slightly and you give her a suspicious glance. "Now, why would you say that? If you're gonna talk about how you want grandkids again, I'll (there's no continuation)

You shake your head, but despite the light conversation, you can tell that there is still something on her mind.

"What is it?"

Oh, wow, that was a missing paragraph I forgot to write. I'll fix it in the next update, thanks for spotting it!

hi! so, i noticed (yesterday, i wanted to check again today to be sure) that i can no longer make any new saves? it says there's no room, but it's the only IF that's doing it. every other IF i've checked (cog demos and otherwise) can still make new saves.

i even deleted the four saves i had to see if it would fix it, which didn't do anything.

idk what to do because i'm a chronic "try EVERY option" player and i just restarted the game repeatedly yesterday to do that but i would like to avoid that tactic because it takes away the magic that is the writing 😭

do you (or anyone else) know how to fix it? searching didn't give me any answers other than "delete saves"

I was told deleting your browser's cache may solve it, but that will delete all your local saves. Alternatively, are you saving locally, or on the server? You could maybe try saving on the server (you'll need an account for it). Or try the quicksave. Unfortunately, the save function is completely out of my hands because it's operated by cogdemos, so I can only tell you what I saw on the forum, but some people are definitely having this problem too. The admin made some changes just 2 days ago that should prevent this, but if it didn't help, then... that's not good.

I'll tell the admin about this now, but you guys can always write into this forum thread if anything technical comes up 👇

Choosing to name the MC Iset is unintentionally hilarious. I have Thief MC, and considering the connection to MC's Grandpa, it's like MC was named after Kajet. Or named themselves after Kajet.

If your thief is young, they certainly could have been named after Kajet! 👀 He came by a lot during the time when grandpa was still alive.

Hii I don’t have a forum account so I can’t post feedback there!

I just want to say I LOVE the setting, the premise, the mysteries (genuinely surprised me a few times), and the ROs. My only critique would be, and I in general don’t have any issues at all with swearing, but for the editing phase I would really suggest cutting out some of the uses of "fuck". It’s just very gratuitous, can read as amateur-ish and characterizes the MC in a fourth-wall-breaking way when it’s used THAT frequently. Eventually my brain started keeping count of how often it was used which broke my immersion because it was on at least every other page, and often times on back to back pages AND often times used several times in the same paragraph and page.

There’s other creative ways to show shock or dread without resorting to using an expletive every time is my suggestion! And I genuinely mean this so so kindly because I enjoyed my playthrough and I think even just that small adjustment would improve the quality of the writing a lot.

Thanks for the nice message! I'm glad you like the game and that I managed to surprise you with some of the twists 😎

Thank you for the polite feedback too. I understand that swearing can have a different effect on immersion for different readers. That said, the excessive use of swears in this story is intentional, and that's why I flagged it clearly on the intro page. It's highly recommended to check it out before you start reading, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

I've been looking into authentic Ancient Egyptian swears to use instead, but since the language has been dead for 2000 years, there isn’t anything available when it comes to everyday speech. The only, scattered few examples are curses from tombs. Those can be quite funny, but they are not the same as casual talk, or a thought process, which is what you're reading in this game, since it was written from a first-person view. If I find some actual Ancient Egyptian words that work, I will be more than happy to use those instead.

At this point, I’m not planning to remove any of the swears unless the CoG company specifically asks me to. In that case, I will do it, of course, but I’ll definitely miss having that layer of expression in the MC's thoughts. Swearing is a natural part of a language for many people around the world. I come from a culture that swears as fluently as a sailor in everyday life. It's not meant to be shocking or edgy. I'm not using it for any kind of effect. It's there because believe it or not, there are people who swear a lot - one could even say 'excessively' -, especially inside their own heads.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts though! 😊

I have to say I am sooo glad I somehow randomly found this interactive fiction, god It is so good. I can't even explain it. I was apprehensive at first but when I played through my first route (which was Ahmose), I was like huh... I don't want to stop playing, so I might as well check out the other routes. Now I am done with all of the routes, and from all of the other interactive fictions that I have played through, i have never fallen in love with EVERYBODY? Hello? How did you do that?

In any case... I love how each route has It's own little thing to it, i like how every single one of routes has It's own kind of angst (some more than others), and how it can also be pretty cute and romantic as well!

Can't wait to see what you will write next! (this is in no way to pressure you, take as long as you need :p)

Thank you, thank you! 🙏

The way I write my characters is a bit like this...

First, I think of a nice, perfect person. Good. Then I slowly start destroying it, take away what they love, give them traumas, make them be wrong a lot, have them screw up, give them a flawed world-view, a biased memory, strange self-esteems, and different degrees of stubbornness, pride, and ego.

In short, I usually try to make them as imperfect as I can. In my opinion, that's what makes a character feel human and not just a nice picture you would hang on your wall 🙂‍↕️

Heads up that the email verification on cogdemos is not working at the moment because too many attempts from the same accounts broke the system. The admin is working to sort it out, so just please stand by in the meantime and don't do anything.

Edit: News! The email verification has been cancelled because the admin's email provider apparently is being a bitch. Accounts should work now but if you need to change your password, you'll have to contact the admin directly on the forum until further notice.

Hey, I saw you said that Tabiry has only been with women, right? Is she a lesbian?

No, every RO in the game is bisexual. Tabiry has a preference for women, but she can still get attracted to others, it just never happened in the past. If you romance her with a male MC, Ebo will tell you in chapter 4 that he didn't know she was interested in others than women, but she very apparently is interested in a romanced MC, regardless of gender, and the others will notice it too.

Hi !! I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but I'd like to put forth the suggestion of adding a 'violence against a child' warning to the 'captain of the guard' origin. I'm aware that those were different times, but some of the MC's descriptions about how their mother had treated them were... more than a little upsetting for my unprepared self, haha. I figured I'd speak up since there's already a content warnings page :] It would be much appreciated!

Done! This shouldn't affect saves, but if your saves suddenly throw you back to startup, try loading them again.

It's still a bit hilarious how the list of warnings steadily grows, except for the thief path, which is still just 'murder'. A very avoidable murder too.

Qenna...... maybe not the shittiest. But it's a close second.

The fact that this is only a close second. My poor Qenna 😢

You know what, I reconsidered in the meantime. The end of chapter four is not a close second for Qenna's 'Shittiest Time of My Life' award. It's very far from the first place. It is definitely a second worst time, but the first was an absolute winner with a giant head start.

oh my god chapter fourrr

ZAIAAAA NOO

anyways the poly with zaia and ahmose is so funny and sweet omg. I love all the interactions with characters and that choice for how you can feel about killing the mercenaries! and poor ahmose my deaaar. also I’m so so curious about what the other people were doing with the crystal and just all the things that might happen in the future. your story plot is so well crafted and your characters are great to interact with! I also noticed thief MC noting that there were so many cats in the pyramid area. is it because cats used to eat the discarded organs before the embalming process for sarcophagi? just a small curious thought.

anyways I’d just like to thank you for writing this! Honestly the chapter was longer than I thought it would be, especially since it hasn’t been that long since the last update and you’re writing for like FOUR separate MC routes with different routes on TOP of that for the different RO/Sesi routes, once we enter the pyramid. basically major applause for that again!

Thank you so much!! 💕 I’m glad you liked chapter four — Zaia is having a sweet vacation in the land of confusing nightmares, but they will be back sometime in the next couple decades for sure (jk).

Your cat theory is quite funny, and it might have some merit, actually.

Most of the important organs in the embalming process were handled carefully and preserved in canopic jars. The stomach, intestines, lungs, and liver all went into canopic jars that were protected by the four sons of Horus. The heart was often embalmed separately and placed back in the body.

Fun fact, Seti I's heart was found placed on the right, and his mummy also showed signs that he was an athletic, strong man who died in his late 30's - early 40's, so historians theorize that he may have died of heart failure, and the reason they put his heart back in the right side of the chest instead of the left, was to make it work better in the afterlife.

Another fun fact, Narmer's character was partially inspired by him :)

The brain was one of the organs that was discarded though because they didn't know its purpose. They didn't think it had anything to do with consciousness — they associated the soul with the heart — so the brain was usually thrown out. It's quite possible that cats and dogs went to scavenge for them, but cats were also kept as sacred animals in most temples, necropolises, and even in homes, because they were associated with the gods.

Who is the most popular amongst the ROs? Or could u rank them based on how many asks u usually [no need to be super accurate] get for each of them? By the way my personal favourite is Zaya⁦♡⁩

I can only guess based on the messages I get, which is probably not an accurate number at all :D The most asks I get at the moment are about Qenna. Narmer and Zaia I think may be very close. Ahmose and Tabiry come up a bit more rarely :)

Anonymous asked:

Captain of the Guard MC being Narmer's loyal guard dog, would lay their life for nothing in return, over protective to a fault, always attentive and at the ready for their beloved master. Narmer is their moral compass, their North Star in the darkest of night, the hand that wields the weapon. If Narmer demands it Captain MC makes it happen. If he asks for the stars, Captain MC asks how many. Captain MC always at attention at Narmer's side, an always present shadow but also a confident, a friend.

The group, watching as MC rearranges their own blankets for Narmer so that he doesn't have to sleep on the bare ground: Qenna: "What did you do to that poor soul to make them into a perfect little soldier?"

Narmer: "Nothing. They keep doing these gestures. I did not ask for them."

Tabiry: "They certainly seem very... dedicated."

Qenna, grinning: "Do you think I can teach them to fetch me a beer?"

MC, without looking up: "Sure, I can do that. Would you like an extra dagger in the guts with it? I'll give it to you free of charge."

Qenna, taking a step back, whispering to Narmer: "You know what? Put your dog on a leash. It bites."

Narmer: "You deserved that."

Anonymous asked:

Ngl I was hesitant to try Qenna path because you said it was a heavy angst but from all the reactions maybe I should play a playthrough 🤔

The Qenna path is going to be heavy. If you don't like angst, I do NOT recommend it, nor Narmer's route.

Then again... If you don't like angst at all, then you should be very careful with this game because it touches on some heavy subjects for sure. And if you only like angst a little bit, then Tabiry, the poly, or the friendship route is probably the best for that, but those will have darker moments too.

You guys, take the warnings seriously, and mental health always comes first! 🙂‍↕️
