This is genuinely one of my favorite lines in the whole series, because it’s got so much meaning. She’s standing in the last place she’ll ever see, looking a what she believed was the cause of all evil, something she committed horrible crimes to fight, and realizing that it’s actually something beautiful. But the fact that she’s talking to Lord Asriel makes it even better, because she’s not just talking about Dust, she’s talking about them. She spends all three books calling their relationship a mistake and a humiliation and sinful, and yet as her life draws to a close, she’s able to look around at Dust and realize, no, we weren’t a mistake. We were beautiful. We were something good.

Lyra & Pan This came out surprisingly well! I’m currently obsessed with a Brazilian telenovela and ever since I saw this one particular photo of Mariana Ximenes, I decided she would have been a great adult Lyra. So, I took the photos and mixed (rather poorly lol) Pan in it and this is the result, which I quite like. The hair was meant to be dirty blonde but all the color dodge lit it up, but it looks very nice imo.

never not thinking about iorek byrnison eating lee scoresby's dead body, so as not to let it rot but instead allow it to sustain an old friend on his journey. and how this act fulfilled lee's dying wish to help lyra by giving iorek the strength to go on and find her. thinking about consumption as a form of love, loving someone in their entirety and wanting to eat them whole but also love and grief being something you carry inside of you that guides you forward

Live theater in the His Dark Materials universe must be wild. Surely an actor's daemon also has lines to recite, so their daemon's form probably also factors into casting decisions. Maybe some plays have vague character descriptions for daemons, but I bet other plays have really specific or central daemon characters. And sure, big-budget theaters can afford to hire a separate actor with a particular daemon to stand backstage while their daemon plays its part onstage, but community theaters don't have those kinds of resources.

Like if you're casting for Julius Caesar, surely the real historical Caesar had a pretty iconic daemon, right? Are you going to cast an actor with a pigeon daemon as Caesar and just have everyone suspend their disbelief that it's Caesar's lioness, ἁμαρτία?

I only ever watched the first season of His Dark Materials so I'm finally going back to it now, and tonight I watched the episode where Lyra has to leave Pan behind to enter the land of the dead, and I don't think a scene of television has ever made me cry as much as that one

At one point he seemed to be showing the moon to Lyra, pointing up at it and holding her so she could see, or perhaps he was showing Lyra to the moon; at any rate he looked like a lord in his own domain, with nothing to fear and all the silvery night to enjoy.

"tell them stories" is only one side of a coin. on the other side, unspoken, is listen. you cannot tell stories to those who do not listen. (you cannot listen to stories that are not told.)

mary malone is not only the story teller, but as the listener too. how many worlds did she wander? how many people did she meet and talk to, in ci'gazze and in ogunwe's world and with the mulefa and speaking to lyra?
