⤷what has fanfiction given you?

hi alllll!! i'm writing this in the byler tag bc i know i lot of people here read and/or write fanfiction:

my peers and i are about to hold argumentative speeches for our national tests, and i have chosen to speak about the positives of fanfic. it often has such a bad rep of being cringe, dumb, unnecessary etc. amongst people not in fandom communities, and i'd like to argue for its good aspects - aspects which i think many of my classmates might not have reflected upon or experienced.

so, i thought, why not turn straight to the source? to those of you who read/write fanfic: do you feel there is anything in particular that fanfiction has contributed to your life?

i'd love to hear what people think about this - fandom spaces are just so special to me ♡

“They’re just friends, stop forcing everything to be gay!”

But I'm sure if one of them was a woman, everyone would ship them (And it would still become canon)

Another storytelling trope that points to Byler

If Will were a girl… she’d be the less glamorous, good-hearted girl who feels like she has no chance with the boy of her dreams because she thinks she has no chance with him. She's the "good girl" you see in COUNTLESS STORIES, from fairy tales to romantic comedies to telenovelas. Perhaps she doesn't think she's pretty, or she's of a lower social station, or she feels she doesn't deserve love. Will says he's "not gonna fall in love":

So she settles with being his best friend, the best support person she can be. TV Tropes describes the "The Girl Next Door," the "approachable, unassuming girl he thinks of as his best friend, his childhood pal, even just One of the Boys... she will always be easy to talk to and usually a good listener. But she also tends to be frank with her opinions and expects the same in return."

Even though society looks down on her and says "of course" people like her don't get their dreams, she puts on a good front and always prioritizes others, even to her own detriment:

She only has her heroic ability to love. She's the UNDERDOG. And the trope is that she wins the boy's heart.

fandoms with mlm ships are being so weird about people having feminine headcanons of one or both of them why does it bother you so much that queer cis men might not hate femininity and could want to express their gender in however makes them happy while also still identifying as men. and some takes are just borderline misogynistic and transphobic with how much you get offended at the mere idea of queer cis men in a skirt or wearing make up

Tbh I think the “Will Voice™️” is one of the biggest pieces of byler evidence

When I was rewatching season 1, I noticed that Mike did use a gentler voice with El… for like an episode. When he thought that Will was dead however, that act immediately dropped and it barely ever came up again.

(While he’s flipping through Will’s paintings may I add)

He was gentle with her a few other times yeah, but when season 2 rolls around he kinda doesn’t use that same tone again. He seems more anxious and hurried than gentle when he tries calling her on the walkie-talkie. And then in season 3-4 he just isn’t gentle at all lmao, he even gaslights her in s4.

Ah yes the speech of true love…. “You’re acting crazy!”

Compare this with Will, there are like… 2 moments when he doesn’t use a gentle tone of voice with him, and in both he sees Will’s face and immediately becomes gentler. In season 2 he tells Dustin and Keith that “I’m not prostituting my sister!”, but he also tells Will that “If we’re both going crazy then at least we’ll go crazy together right?”

In season 3 when El “dumps his ass” he makes a face halfway between disgust and annoyance. When Will gets mad at him, right after he snaps and says “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls!” His face IMMEDIATELY softens and he tells Will that it was a great campaign. (And afterwards he even biked over to his house in POURING RAIN just to apologize)

In season 4, he gets agitated when Lucas tries to get Hellfire postponed. He also swears that he says “I love you” to El even though he never does, and he eventually ends up calling her “crazy”. Compare this with Will, when after rink-o-mania and they had their fight there, a few days later he apologizes and recognizes he was in the wrong, while asking to work together as a team again.

That scene was also just… a whole analysis on its own. My point is, if he loves El so much and doesn’t like Will, why is Will the only person he’s CONSISTENTLY gentle with throughout the whole show??

Lukewarm take:

If mileven is endgame, it will ruin Mike’s character, cuz that means he was just a dick for no reason

People who want mileven to be endgame either want Mike’s behavior explained a different way, or don’t care if their ship ruins the characters so long as those gosh darn gays don’t take up the screen!!!

Byler is literally the best outcome writing wise, El needs space, Will needs.. happiness, and Mike

Well

Mike needs Will
