Oh, I really like the idea of a mysterious being – not quite defined – who feeds on stories in exchange for some kind of mysterious “relief”. It’s both fascinating and unsettling.

I’m really looking forward to finding out what this woman is going to share… and what the collector will do with her story.

I wasn’t tagged, but I felt like introducing my girl a little (Evelyne has a detailed character sheet : Here) through a short scene — hope that’s alright! 👉👈

This is her Sorting Ceremony moment (640 words), when she’s placed in Slytherin.🐍 (Please be lenient with any grammatical errors (ESL writer)

‘Interesting... very interesting.’

The voice pierces her even before she has time to breathe. There she is, perched on that stool, too tall for her, the Sorting Hat pulled down to her eyebrows, and yet Evelyne feels utterly exposed. Every fold of her mind is examined, laid bare by that ageless voice echoing within her.

Professors Garlick and Ronen had spoken to her about this moment but nothing had prepared her for this kind of intrusion. Nor for being the centre of attention beneath hundreds of eyes. The young witch shuts her eyes to avoid them and silences the murmurs by focusing on the voice in the Hat. She does not beg, she does not protest… She awaits the verdict.

‘So much restraint in you... And a strong desire to succeed... Oh, not as most people would understand it, not for applause. But to be free.’

Her fingers tighten around the edge of the stool. The wood creaks.

‘Not Gryffindor. There is courage, yes, but you do not seek glory. Not Hufflepuff either: you would give everything to those who matter, but certainly not to just anyone. And their warmth would burn you. Ravenclaw, perhaps? You would be comfortable there... but for you, knowledge is a means to an end, not the end itself, is it?’

Something in Evelyne falters, and she fights the urge to seek comfort in the gentle smile of Professor Garlick, seated at the staff table. A frightening thought arises, ‘So I’m not suited to any house?’

In that case, will they send her back to Foley and Briar?

After letting her glimpse a world of wonders — where water, flames, or flowers leap from wands, where staircases move of their own accord, where chess pieces complain, portraits greet passers-by, and ghosts can be nearly headless — will they now show her the door?

‘There’s still one left, you know...’ says the Sorting Hat, its smile almost tangible.

Her throat runs dry.

‘Slytherin,’ she thinks, hiding her distaste out of respect for kind Professor Ronen, who had overseen the summer levelling classes for Muggle-borns in her year.

‘But I’m a mudblood!’ she says inwardly, repeating the insult she had heard.

The cry does not pass her lips, but it echoes deafeningly in her mind.

‘I know. And it doesn’t matter. Salazar Slytherin would have rejected you, that’s true. But I am not him. I am the sum of what all four founders left within me.... There, you will not be coddled. You may not like everything you see — nor everyone you meet. Some will look at you as if you don’t belong. But no house will teach you better than Slytherin how not to wait on others’ goodwill to claim your place in the world.’

A murmur, soft and sly, slides beneath her skin like a forbidden charm, ‘Elsewhere, you may survive — even be sheltered! At Slytherin, you may rise... perhaps even high enough for your solitude to meet that of a classmate whose wary distance is the mark of a life spent surviving in the dark.’

Evelyne doesn’t understand it all. But the persuasive tone works its way into her. She opens her eyes, and her gaze falls upon him, the boy everyone had whispered about when he wore the same pointed hat.

Seated, back straight, hands folded on his knees. His skin has the pallor of ivory. His hair is slicked back, perfectly neat. And his pupil-fewer eyes are fixed on the platform.

But it’s the wand that catches her attention. Pure black, held between his fingers, its blood-red tip pulsing slowly, methodically.

A heart beating outside his body.

Ad then the verdict, ‘SLYTHERIN!’

Then comes the test of trust.
