This week we’re looking at our favorite books of the year… so far.

In order to make a mark at her top-notch performing arts school, middle of the pack Jordan disguises herself as a boy and joins an elite all male a-capella group. All the rom-com and sit-com shenanigans ensue, but in the midst is a pretty great examination of what it means to be a girl in a boy’s world.
Grace is having a hard time connecting with her school friends, who don’t know her true self- an obsessive fan of the boy band Dream Fever. And now, after a chance encounter, she’s having a hard time talking to her fandom friends who don’t know that she’s the mystery girl in newly released paparazzi photos of Jes, the dreamy lead singer. As Grace gets drawn farther and farther into the actual world of Dream Fever, how is she supposed to reconcile the real band with the one she’s loved for so long?
Molly has had 27 crushes and no kisses. Her twin sister has had tons of kisses, but never an actual girlfriend. When her sister falls in love for the first time, Molly can’t help but feel left out and left behind. Set in a summer of firsts, Molly begins to figure out who she is when she isn’t in her twin’s shadow.
Starr is a code switching champ- at school she’s the cool, polished black girl in a sea of white who knows how to laugh and definitely doesn’t mind when people touch her hair. At home she’s comfortable walking through a rough neighborhood, hanging out with her friends from elementary school, shooting down gross dudes on the street and hanging out at her family’s corner store.But when a childhood friend is shot and killed by the police in front of Starr, she starts finding it more and more difficult to keep her two worlds separate.
So this book has been out about a year, but I totally slept on it in 2016. Don’t make the same mistake I did. A beautiful story about fandom, podcasts, meeting your heroes and finding out they’re so much more out there than you could have ever imagined.
