See the problem with lumping in Anders stans with Solas/Cullen/Astarion stans is the whole framing of the thing. I resent the implication that "Anders stans" excuse or downplay his behavior due to his pain or trauma.
In fact his pain and trauma are certainly a part of his behavior but he's 100% always cognizant of what he's doing. He knows exactly the reasons why he's doing it. He's exhausted all the other options, and came to the logical and fucking CORRECT assumption that this would change the status quo. The explosion was premeditated. He planned it and executed it flawlessly.
Crucially, though, was cool that he did that, to me. I like that he blew up that building. Yes even with people in it.
Do not lump me in with "Don't make Cullen examine his hatred of mages! He was tortured by them!" or "Solas was only obeying Mythal and had no control over his actions!" or "Astarion needs to ascend to finally feel safe!" Those arguments try to use trauma to excuse something bad those guys are doing or trying to do. They're attempting to remove the character's agency and responsibility.
But any based Anders fan likes that he did that shit. They like that he took matters into his own hands. Both his display of agency outside of player control and the outcome. So like. You're fundamentally misunderstanding the appeal of the Anders. Why would we excuse something that's absolutely fucking based?
Anders knew what he was doing and he did it by choice and he did it on purpose and I LIKE IT. I think what he did is MORALLY DEFENSIBLE. And even if I DIDN'T think that, I would still maintain that HE did, and he KNEW what he was doing, and WHY he was doing it. It wasn't just due to trauma. He's perfectly capable of dealing with his own trauma, in fact. It was due to persistent, unending injustice, one that affected not only him, but his friends and loved ones. He did it to stop the oppression of all mages, not just himself. He wasn't lashing out because of his own pain, but because of the pain inflicted upon everyone who happened to be born a mage.
"Oh you're only excusing his actions because--!" I'M NOT EXCUSING SHIT. HE BLEW UP THAT BUILDING. AND HE WAS CORRECT IN DOING SO.
"Excusing his actions" lmao. I don't need to excuse shit. Babygirl I am endorsing his actions.
'They like that he took matters into his own hands. Both his display of agency outside of player control and the outcome.'
Yea it's the part where a character doesn't need to be prodded by player to choose.
CONFESSION:
Y’all I don’t even like Anders and I’m tired of hearing about him approving of giving Fenris to Danarius. Do I think it’s out of character or bad writing? Not really Act 3 him is in a bad place in a ton a ways so him being a weird myopic asshole in this specific instance doesn’t seem that wild to me. Also, it’s a game with an approval system and at some point the writers are just filling out the options.
Even more importantly though, nobody fucking does it. Outside of the evilest of evil runs and embarrassing edgelords no one is giving Fenris back, this isn’t some common occurrence on every playthrough and we don’t need to bring it up in every single discussion of Anders’ character. Like shit there are plenty of other reasons not to like him we don’t have to sift through shit nobody actually does

I feel like Hawke is the most wattpad Y/N-ified main character we've ever gotten in a videogame.
Like yeah.. My dad died a long time ago, and I had to live in poverty with my family until our crummy little town was destroyed. My brother died in the wreckage, then we moved in with my abusive uncle, who essentially sold us into assassination work in exchange for a place to stay.. We're saving up to do this big expedition, but it killed my sister, and OOP turns out, we're secretly rich, and now I live in a mansion, but where did my mom go? Shit, she died, too. Anyways, time to save kirkwall and be named a hero despite all the shady shit I did on the way here, Byeeee- Also, all of my friends are hot and also into me.
Like the only thing that could Y/N-ify Hawke more is a messy bun and being sold to one direction.
