Hello! I’m Meril (she/her)

I’m glad you’ve stopped by my little corner of the internet. If you like what you see, don’t hesitate to give me a follow and pop in my askbox or DMs to chat!

I’m involved with a small number of fandoms and pieces of media. These include Tolkien, Arthuriana, A Song of Ice and Fire, Dungeons and Dragons, The Elder Scrolls, Classic Literature, and Art History.

I also love pretty pictures of flowers and landscapes, and there will be many cat memes.

I like to make art and write as well. I’m primarily an OC artist/author, so fanart will be few and far between.

My creations can be found under the tag #merilles, and my OCs should be tagged with #meril’s ocs.

Thank you ♡♡♡

You ever look at some art your mutual made and you just sit there in stunned silence and awe that one of your friends is out there making jaw-dropping beautiful art just for the hell of it

How it feels when your friend who you have wacky and silly conversations and jokey-joke haha times with makes something that's so good it changes your brain chemistry

I am actually so serious I think it really messes with a childs creativity and joy to tell them to never make a mary sue OC. Like that unbridaled form of joy where you make a self insert OC who super cool and everyone loves them and they have every superpower in the world SHOULD be something a kid makes, it nourishes their ability to create things for fun and not be stifled by "oh but what if my character is too overpowered and cringey...". whatever

You know what?

I'm gonna add to this.

It stifles adult's creativity too.

Don't put restrictions on people's creativity.

That Mary-Sue OC you made as a child? That's a template for a well rounded character. Develop that shit. Flesh them out. Make them even better. Figure out what superpowers they really need and what ones are just extra. Let the character grow with you.

But you won't have that template to work off of if you were told not to make it.

Also, let people have power fantasies. Let that bullied isolated kid have an OC who's super powerful and surrounded by friends.

Let people tell stories, for fuck's sake.

Carrying all of the imagined worlds that give me shelter slung over my shoulder in a little cloth bag tied to a stick

There's nothing more important than writing what you want to read. Don't worry about who will like your book. Don't worry about what market it can neatly fit into. Don't cut corners or blunt edges to satisfy an imaginary person who might dislike aspects of your art. It's yours. Treat it as a pure expression of your soul. Compromise is for cowards.

art will save you, being unreasonably passionate about something niche will save you, letting past sources of joy show you the way back to yourself will save you, earnestness over composure will save you, the natural world will save you, caring for something bigger than yourself will save you, daring to be seen will save you, kindness not as a whim but a principle will save you, appreciation as a practice will save you, daring to try something new will save you, grounding will save you, love will save you, one good nights sleep will save you

WARNING do NOT start reading books and comics or watching movies or looking at art!!! you will start wanting to create art yourself. or god forbid. writing.

girl who finally is going back to reading by finishing one book: now i'm going to read all the books in the world.
