unbroken - April 2 - jegulus - cw: implied panic attack - @taylorswiftmicrofic - word count: 300

Up until this point, Regulus had been able to avoid James when he was like this. When his body was shaking and his hands trembled and his heart was beating so hard it threatened to leap from his throat.

He knew how to cope…or, at least, survive. He locked himself in a closet or bathroom, curled on the floor, and stifled his sobs in his knees, waiting for the screaming in his head to ease and pass. It was easier this way–to allow the people he cared about to believe he was whole; unbroken; even after all he’d endured.

But he should have known. James was a doting Golden Retriever, always showing up at his side and loving him in a way he felt he completely didn’t deserve.

So this time, when the broom cupboard he was hiding in opened, he didn’t have to guess who it was.

“Go away, James,” he mumbled, trying to slow the tremors wracking his body.

“No.”

James rarely said no to him. He was so adoring, so loving, that he simply wanted to make Regulus happy, and refusing him was certainly the opposite of that. But now, he said the word so defiantly, Regulus turned, laying one confused eye on the Gryffindor.

“As if I’d leave when that’s the exact thing you’re afraid of,” James said confidently, squeezing his tall frame into the cupboard along with him and closing the door.

Regulus’s breath caught in his throat as his deepest secret, his biggest fear, was laid bare on the dusty stone floor as nonchalantly as if it was a discussion of the weather.

But James didn’t seem to expect a response. He just sat, drawing doodles in the dust on the ground, allowing Regulus to feel his feelings in the safety of his presence.

Hiya, sending this as an ask so I can put it on anon, but no need to answer. I saw the note at the end of your microfic about Remus going to the doctor and wanted to share something that I hope might help:

I put on weight when I started antidepressants over a decade ago and even tho I stopped shortly after, I've struggled with my weight ever since. It's tough, and personally the medication didn't work for me, but everyone's different. The main thing is you've taken that first step and you're getting help - people don't always realise what a difficult thing that is to do and how much strength it takes. But regardless of what happens next, what your body looks like, or how you react to the medication, the important thing is that you've survived this far and you're going to keep surviving because you are strong (you've proven that today), and there's going to be something that makes it worth it.

As I say, the medication didn't work for me, I put on weight, I got dumped, failed some exams and went into a bad spiral. It took me nearly a decade before I found something that worked (a really good therapist who I actually clicked with after 6 or 7 others) but the important thing is I kept asking for help even when it felt like there was nothing left to be done. Don't get me wrong, asking for help has always been hard, there was a lot of fighting myself in-between, trying to convince myself I didn't deserve help or it wasn't worth it. But looking back now, I'm glad I kept trying.

I hope your journey is easier than that, but I also know that whatever it is, you're strong enough to survive it and you deserve to find out what's waiting for you at the other end.

Sincerely wishing you all the good in life - you got this <3

Thank you so much! 😭❤️

Seeking help - a wolfstar microfic

Remus opened the door, well aware that Sirius had asked him to call so that he could pick him up and not have to walk all the way from the bus stop. He was prepared to use any excuse: that it was nice weather, that he liked the walk. Anything that spared him from admitting he felt too worthless to waste Sirius' time.

Sirius' first question was another, though.

“How did it go?”

“I suck.” Remus declared calmly.

“The doctor did not say that”, Sirius answered even calmer. To calm. I’m-dealing-with-a-mental-patient kind of calm.

Remus let himself be led to their kitchen and accepted a big cup of tea.

“No”, he admitted, “he didn’t say that. In fact, he told me well done for seeking help. But he must have thought I’m a bad case since he prescribed me medicine, put me on half-time sick leave and referred me to a psychologist.”

The tears were there again, burning his eyes. Crying was all he did nowadays.

Sirius put a gentle hand on Remus’ arm.

“I tried to be positive and said, ‘nice, then I can work until noon and then go home and sleep.’ Do you know what the fucker said? ‘Absolutely not. You need daylight and activation. Take walks. Work in the garden.’”

“You used to love working in the garden,” Sirius says slowly.

Remus looks down at the table and spins his teacup in his hands a couple of times.

“I used to love working in the garden. But nothing is fun anymore.”

“That’s why you need help. That’s why you did the right thing today.”

“What is my boss going to say?”

Sirius shrugs. “What can she say? You’ve got a doctor’s note.”

Remus drinks his tea. Sirius offers him a cookie, which he doesn’t take.

“I’m going to get fat by the medicine.”

“You’ve never been fat in your life, you lucky arse.”

“I’m not making this up,” Remus protests. “Increased appetite and weight gain are among the well-known side-effects.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen to you.”

“I’m going to get fat and ugly and you are going to leave me”, Remus presses. Just because he can. Just because he knows he’ll get the reassurance he wants.

“I’m never going to leave you. Never ever. Besides, if you get a little more appetite that’s only good for you, then I don’t have to force you to eat that often.”

He reaches for Sirius and he is there in an instant. Wrapping his arms around him, providing just the safe spot he needs when everything else is chaos.

At least this is a start. He’ll try this. If it doesn’t help, he’ll try something else.

This is me, in case anyone cares. I'm Remus. Imagin if I had been married to Sirius and come home telling him about today's visit to the doctor.

Casual - a jegulus microfic

@into-the-jeggyverse - April 1: Fool - Words: 414

"Reg?"

Regulus doesn't answer. Just keeps staring intently at the stone wall of the secluded alcove.

"Is this where you're hiding?"

"Go away, Potter."

It comes out too rushed, too angry, lacking all the cool and composure he aimed for.

James doesn't go away. He sits down beside Regulus in one easy movement.

"What did I do this time?"

If he is going to play dumb, Regulus is not going to grace him with a glance, let alone a reply.

"I kind of missed you at the party." James tries.

Regulus hates the unsure tremble in James' voice. Hates how it pulls at his heartstrings. As if he hadn't just seen James with his arms around the neck of some girl, not seeming to be missing him the slightest. Why would he? James is fit, charming, popular. Everything that Regulus is not.

"Find someone else to fool!" he bites.

"Oh", James says and leans back against the wall with a soft thud, "you saw me with Rebecca."

James has the audacity to laugh, soft and a little exasperated. Regulus can't help but to turn around and glare at him.

"It was nothing, Reg."

"Lies!" Regulus hopes his unintended breathlessness doesn't reveal how much he hope it's not lies.

"She had this overly insistent guy after her that wouldn't take no for an answer, so I agreed to dance with her for a bit just to give her a break. Apparently played the part too good."

James still smiles, but his voice vibrates with sincerity. "I wouldn't have done it if I had known it would hurt you." There is an amused glint to James' eyes when he continues. "But it is you who have kept insisting this is all casual, no strings attached."

He is right. Regulus hates that he is right. But that is exactly why he left instead of confronting James. He knew he had no right.

Yet James cared to come looking for him and that has to count for something.

Regulus looks into James' unbelievably kind eyes. Against his will, his cheeks start to burn and his mouth twists in an embarrassed smile.

James gently takes his hand. “I care about you, Reg. I promise.”

“Prove it,” Regulus pouts, all hostility drained from his voice.

James kisses him. Long enough, tender enough, passionate enough that Regulus starts believing every word whispered between the kisses.

And Regulus starts thinking that maybe, maybe, it’s time to stop insisting this is all casual.

"Think before you speak"

Regulus definitely heard that a million times growing up.

"Think." Because every word out of your mouth is said for the ancient noble house of black.

"Think." Because if you say something the paintings will snitch.

"Think!" Because mother will hit.

"Think before you speak" was said so many times he just stopped speaking and only thought. That is until he was with James.

It took a bit, but even in the beginning he felt more safe. Regulus felt less worry behind his words, less fear for how someone will react to hearing them. James knows, Sirius told him about it before, so he's ecstatic when Regulus starts speaking without worry, without thought.

Think before you speak but not with him. With him you speak what you think and he will love you for it. No matter what.

James sat cross-legged on the floor, watching Pandora shuffle her tarot deck with an almost ethereal grace. The flickering candlelight cast long shadows across the room, making the entire moment feel far more mystical than it probably was. Regulus, seated beside him, had his arms crossed, clearly unimpressed.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Regulus asked, eyeing James skeptically.

"Reg, you don’t question the mystic arts!" James gasped, hand on his chest in exaggerated offense. "Let Pandora work her magic."

Aparecium (Aprit 1st)

Word count: 674

Regulus realises, in the midst of the chaos all around him, that he really ought to learn to mind his damn business.

He’s self-aware enough to know that won’t happen any time soon, especially when it comes to things having to do with his older brother, but it's something he can work towards. Or try working towards.

Regulus walks out of the parlour room and he spots Sirius almost instantly, sitting on the floor. Regulus walks up to him. “I didn’t mean for them to find it,” he says softly.

Sirius looks up at him. “What?” The way Sirius looks when he’s home for the holidays always gives Regulus whiplash. This doesn’t feel like his brother at all.

“Your notebook. I had it with me. I had it in my trunk. That’s how Bellatrix got it. But I didn’t give it to her. She stole it.” His sentences are clipped and short. He realizes that Sirius sucker punching him would be so much easier than whatever is currently happening for the both of them. Sirius wouldn’t hurt him, Regulus knows this even now, and Regulus doesn’t necessarily deserve to get off easy anyway.

Sirius blinks, then shrugs. “I don’t care about the notebook, Reg.”

Regulus shakes his head. He wants to say so much. He’s self-aware enough to know he won’t say the half of it. He coughs. “I’m sorry, Sirius.”

Sirius shrugs again. “It’s okay.”

Regulus feels like he has to explain. He sits next to Sirius on the floor, mirroring his stance and leaning against the cobblestone wall. All of their cousins are in the parlour room and Regulus hears loud laughing and glasses clinking. He thinks about how to word his next sentence. “I never looked inside.”

“Yeah?”

“I didn’t read inside the notebook.” Regulus clears his throat. “I mean, I did flip through it, but I never performed an aparecium. I figured whatever you’d written must have been private if you’d gone to the length of using invisible ink, so I didn’t– I mean–”

Sirius raises an eyebrow. Regulus coughs again and continues. “I know that I did steal the notebook in the first place, so it is ridiculous that I am talking about respecting your privacy, but– I want you to know that I tried to. With everything but the actual stealing, I guess.”

Sirius grins. “Thank you, Reggie.”

Regulus doesn’t know what to do now. He nods and says, “Bellatrix sucks for reading it aloud, for what it’s worth.”

“I don’t care,” Sirius says, eyes honest. “I’m not ashamed of liking Remus, you know. I don’t care that they know.”

Regulus thinks, not for the first time, that Sirius must be the bravest person in the universe. “What if she tells him?” Regulus blurts. He doesn’t necessarily know where the question came from but it’s out there now.

Sirius smiles softly. “Then she’d be helping me out. I haven’t figured out how to tell Remus yet and my crazy cousin doing it for me might actually be better than some of the ideas I’ve had.”

Regulus wishes, also not for the first time, that he could be more like Sirius. He hopes that Sirius can get as far away from this rotten family as he can get, even if that means Sirius getting away from him, too.

“I think he likes you, too,” Regulus mumbles, getting up and dusting off his pants. His chest is starting to hurt and he has to get away from Sirius, now, before he says something stupid. “He looks at you funny, sometimes. Like you–” Regulus feels his face warm up. “Well, you know how.”

“Do I?” Sirius asks, getting up as well. He’s smiling in a way that actually does remind Regulus of his brother; bright and mischievous.

“I’m sorry, again. I promise to leave your things be from now on. We should get back. Um. Good luck with Remus.” Regulus doesn’t wait for Sirius to reply. He doesn’t think he deserves Sirius’ forgiveness at all, but he’s glad he has it.

Why did Harry use only Expelliarmus on Voldemort but Sectumsempra on Draco? Also, if Expelliarmus was Harry's go to spell why use Sectumsempra when he could use it against Draco's Crucio?

Harry fights Draco really differently than he fights everyone else.

So okay. Normally when he fights, Harry's go-to spells are:

  • Impedimenta (slow down)
  • Petrificus Totalus (paralyze)
  • Stupefy (knock out)
  • Expelliarmus (disarm)

Which means his strategy is get away from/incapacitate his opponent as quickly as possible and that's IT. Harry is not a flashy or creative fighter the way Dumbledore, Voldemort, and heck even side characters like Percy are. Which makes perfect sense. Fighting has never been a game for Harry. It's never been abstract. He'll do all these badass things but when he talks about fighting (like we see during the DA segments) he's not thinking about it like it's something interesting or cool. He's picturing going up against a more powerful opponent, probably while injured and scared. And what's the best thing to have in that situation? Four useful, all-purpose spells that you've practiced enough times that you don't have to think about them anymore.

Zachariah Smith gives Harry a hard time for relying on a spell as "basic" as expelliarmus, which tells us that in-universe, Harry's stripped-down dueling style might be considered kind of plain or boring. But Harry's a very effective duelist, probably because he is so practical. He doesn't care about showing off, looking powerful, or intimidating his opponents.

... except when he's fighting specifically Draco.

When he's fighting DRACO MALFOY, Harry brings out the fun spells:

  • Rictusempra (tickling)
  • Furnunculus (boils)
  • Leg-Locker jinx
  • Levicorpus (levitate by ankle)
  • Toenail-growing hex

And also Sectumsempra, which he THINKS is going to be another embarrassing/fun spell, because levicorpus and the toenail-growing hex also came out of the Half-Blood Prince's textbook, and Harry thinks this third spell is going to be another one like that.

So my conclusion is that Harry just kind of... uniquely enjoys fighting with Draco. He's not trying to end the encounter as fast as possible, there probably is some element where he wants to show off, hit Draco with something new or something clever. Harry and Draco have a dynamic where it's *fun* to one-up/get the upper hand over each other, and duels are perfect for that.

To me this is a very natural extension of Harry's "lets plot hypothetical ways to get Malfoy expelled" (which he does with Ron, for fun) and "lets try to figure out what Suspicious Thing Malfoy is up to now" (one of Harry's very favorite pastimes.) So long story short - when Harry fights Draco, he fights like a teenager. When he fights anyone else, he fights like an auror.

James Potter had a lot of great ideas. Most of them were fun. Some of them were borderline reckless. A handful of them were absolute financial disasters waiting to happen.

Like the one he was proposing right now.
