You hated three things in life.

Unfortunately, the universe had a cruel sense of humor, because this morning, you were dealing with all three.

The first was easy to fix—you dumped three sugar packets into your coffee, stirring aggressively. The second? Nothing you could do about that.

The third was sitting across from you, tapping his pen against his notebook with that annoyingly perfect smirk.

"Can you not?" you snapped, glaring at him.

Heeseung raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence. "Not what?"

"The tapping. The breathing. The existing."

His lips twitched, but he stayed silent, spinning his pen between his fingers.

This was supposed to be the most important project of your academic career. A year-long research paper, a defining moment that could boost your future.

And you were stuck with him.

Lee Heeseung—the one person who had been ruining your life since freshman year.

It started with class rankings. You’d been first for two years, and then he transferred in, and suddenly, you had competition.

Then it was debate club. Every match, every argument, he matched you. Point for point, blow for blow.

Then came the little things.

Every. Damn. Thing.

The last seat at the café. The last slice of cake at the student lounge. The last iced coffee.

Everything you wanted—Heeseung got there first.

And now, he had this.

This project. You.

"You look tense," Heeseung observed, resting his chin on his palm.

"That’s because I am," you shot back.

"Want me to give you a massage?"

You froze.

Your brain short-circuited.

Heeseung just smiled, all smug and infuriating, like he knew exactly what he was doing.

"You’re disgusting," you muttered, looking away.

"And you’re predictable," he hummed.

You turned back, narrowing your eyes. "What’s that supposed to mean?"

He leaned in slightly, voice dropping lower.

"It means," he said smoothly, "that for someone who claims to hate me, you sure think about me a lot."

Your breath caught.

For a second—just a second—you forgot how to reply.

And that was all it took.

That flicker of hesitation. That pause.

Heeseung saw it.

And judging by the way his smirk deepened, he was never going to let you forget it.
