synopsis: a story in which sugawara falls for the president of the gardening club. through letters they communicate, at first formal—but a simple acquaintance grows into friendship, and later blooms into love. though, it's a question of whether or not they'll have enough time in the sun, as graduation is near and their petals may fall.

02. to the gas station!

your eyes flutter open, and you shift in your seat, looking around—a bit dazed and confused as you notice the car had stopped.

akaashi, whose shoulder you had to thank for a comfortable drive, smiled at your drowsy face.

“it’s 11, you’ve been asleep for almost the entire drive” he answers your question before you have the chance to ask.

you look around the car, “where is everyone?” you ask, noticing the lack of passengers and your driver.

“inside,” he states, using his head to gesture towards the gas station which the car was parked in front of, “koutaro needed to use the bathroom and kenma wanted snacks.” 

it was a building you were very familiar with. you happened to spend most of your days after school with friends at the station, grabbing snacks and chatting while walking home or eating them on the curb. such a simple spot held so many memories.

“you don’t wanna go inside too?” you ask, stretching your body a bit.

“i do, but i didn’t want to leave you alone in the car or wake you up.” he explains, “do you wanna go in?

i learned today that i’m not so much of a baker nor a cook. tell your brother i said thank you for the recipe, but i think it’s better if i stick to just eating cakes instead of baking them!! also, yes! i’ll be staying with my grandmother over the entire summer break. that said, i don’t want to stop exchanging letters with you during the break. that’s like, a month and a half of no contact! would it be weird if i sent you my grandmother’s address? don’t go spreading it with your teammates! that’s a joke. i doubt you would do such a thing haha. her address should be on sticky note inside the envelope. i’ll make sure to keep writing to you, please don’t hesitate to send me letters over the break too!

sugawara, i’d love to go on a date with you! i’d be happy to hang out with you in “not just a friend” kind of way haha. let’s go out and get lunch together before we both leave for the summer break! i know a nice cafe-bakery near our school, perhaps we can go when you’re done with volleyball practice—or maybe you already have something planned out! just let me know when, i’m sure i can make any day work. i’ll make sure to take lots of pictures while im in tochigi, i hope you do the same! that way, when we come back from break we can have another date and catch up over what we did during the summer! i’m very happy you asked me, and i’m looking forward to our date!

you left your hair clip at my place! i made sure to wrap it in tissue so its safe, it should be in the envelope. friday was a bit embarrassing with my mother, but i hope you had a good time. my mom absolutely adores you! my brother does too, he’s been asking when you’ll be back. he also wrote down the recipe for the castella cake he baked! it should be on the back of the letter! i’m very happy with how fond my family’s grown of you. i think i’ve grown quite fond of you too.

do you maybe want to have lunch together again sometime? except without my family—it’d be just you and me. i suppose that’d be a date then? would you like to go on a date together? to clarify i mean this in a “not just a friend” kind of way. i hope i’m not crossing any boundaries or being too forward. sorry, im a bit nervous, could you tell?

anyway, i’ll be leaving soon for summer break with the volleyball team. we’re going to tokyo for a training camp! i’m pretty excited, though i’m nervous too. i want to be of more use to the team, so hopefully this training camp will help. wish me luck! speaking of summer, do you have any plans? i remember you mentioning visiting your grandma in tochigi soon. take some pictures of flowers for me! i’ll snap some in tokyo too so i can ask you about all the flowers when we return home. i’m excited to see you soon.

“are you sure you guys want to come?”

akaashi was in the kitchen with kuroo, packing some snacks for the road last minute.

“you’re asking that now? after everyone’s already packed?” a grin adorns kenma’s face as he scrolls through his phone,

“i just want to make sure!” you smile, as bokuto opens the front door, ready to take more suitcases to the car.

“is it just these last two?” he asks to which akaashi rushes over and hands him one more bag.

“that should be it! but maybe we should double check we packed everything? hyogo is quite the drive”

“you’ve already overpacked a whole lot ‘kaashi” kuroo laughs, slinging an arm over his shoulder to which he rolls his eyes to. 

“if we need anything we can just stop to buy it.” you reassure him.

“okay then, that should be it.” he sighs, putting his hands on his hips, feeling accomplished.

“great!” kenma says sarcastically as he rolls off the couch, “that only took 2 hours.”

“to the car everyone!” bokuto cheered, leading the way with his suitcases.

so i've tried planning my fics a couple of different ways, but the process that i find to be the most successful (for me anyway!!) is planning very little... but also not too little? LOL

i start with an idea, and from there i start writing out (on a doc or a piece of paper works! i use paper because scribbling and hand writing just helps my brain work hehe) my ideas for the story like how the characters will meet, their relationship, how it'll develop, what conflict(s) may occur, etc... basically anything IMPORTANT—and from then on i determine how many chapters + how much i want to write for this fic as well as what kind of fic it'll be (traditionally written, smau, letterfic).

once i figure out the amount of chapters, i then like to figure out which chapters will be the most important in regards to the plot!! i personally don't like planning out the entire chapter/story as i like to kind of go with a flow. i discovered that i have more fun writing freely than i do planning out too much (i also lose motivation quicker if i plan it all out... that may just be a me thing haha). but to make sure i stay on track with the story, i write down one essential event in the chapter for the plot!! (+ i also like to name the chapters when i have a solid for-sure plot... but sometimes ill switch it up and change the names LOL) for example, in forget-me-nots ch 03. i only planned that i would mention flowers in regards to his mothers garden, the rest of the chapter i figured out as i wrote. i try not to plan so much because i find that the story changes and adapts as my ideas for it grow. as a writer, i believe that what's most important is that you enjoy what you're making!! your process doesn't have to look like mine or any other authors, just make sure you're having fun!!!

i have so many thank yous to give! the muffins were delicious, tell your brother that the gardening club thanks him very much for the treat. i never would’ve guessed that you’re an older brother, but after learning about it, i can’t help but feel that it just makes sense! how much younger is your brother? does he go to school with us? does he look like you? i’m very curious!

also, i talked to ukai the other day. i drop by his family's shop from time to time, i like the steamed buns. i like to try a different flavor for every time i stop by. have you tried them? i recommend the bbq pork flavor! is that too basic? it's one of my favorite flavors haha. he asked me to make him a bouquet for his grandpa, he's visiting him soon apparently. i couldn't deny him, but i am pretty nervous to make a flower arrangement for someone other than you. i hope i don't mess up. ukai even insisted on paying me! i said no to money, so we settled on free steamed buns whenever i visit after school. i don't know how he agreed to such a trade—i get the strange feeling he doesn't make the best financial decisions.

please tell your mom i'm thankful for the flower seeds! perhaps i'll tell her myself over dinner? that is, if you were serious about your offer. who knows. i hope you don't mind, but i've shared some of the seeds with my club members. we usually focus on nurturing the flowers we already have, rather than planting new ones. while i love the idea of exposing them to all sorts of new flowers, i want my club members to understand the importance of preservation and prioritization. if you have too many flowers, its becomes hard to take care of them. if you're not careful, the flowers might die from lack of care. but i digress, everyone's excited about the new seeds, it's been a while! though, i did keep some lilac seeds for myself, i think i'm going to plant those in my garden. they take a while to grow, but i think it'll be worth it. i hope to see you soon sugawara!

about the flowers!

➤ lilacs: these lovely flowers represent all sorts of love. more specifically, light purple lilacs may symbolize first love or even the first emotions of love. however, darker shades of purple symbolize nostalgia along with romance. haha i would also like to directly quote this flower website i found called lovingly, "lilacs symbolize young love and the impermanence of youth, making them perfect in a bouquet for an old flame who has become a dear friend" so just... let that sink in... also! lilac bushes typically take 3-5 years to grow and bloom so...!!!

a/n: we are SO back. college apps are done and finished (minus a few supplemental apps i need to finish but who cares) im back!!! sorry it took so long! technically im not on thanksgiving break yet, but its close enough. taking a break from writing really helped my creative juices flow LOL im very excited to write more for forget-me-nots... i have a lot planned.

hi!!! i know im technically on a hiatus rn, but im coming back pretty soon since my college apps are almost done and thanksgiving break is coming up!

when it comes to vocab... ill be so honest, i literally just search up synonyms for words on google or dictionary.com to help come up with the right words and phrases i want.

also when it comes to the actual writing part of my fics it kinda depends on each fic LMAO as for sftc (atsumu x reader) its been... tough... im not very proud of how it's going so far bc i literally wrote it on a whim and im trying to give it a plot since it never had one to begin with. (yeeeeesh)

for forget-me-nots though, im SO excited to write more!! for that fic, i keep a notebook/journal that has all my thoughts and ideas for the fic. i use that notebook for creative writing in general (i swear i dont just have a fic journal LMAO) i write the overall conflict, how/if it's going to be fixed, and then i like to write the amount of chapters + short summaries of the chapter and what needs to occur in them.

i will say, i believe that it's important for each chapter of your story to have a purpose. i failed to do so with sftc, but for forget-me-nots, i plan to succeed! whether it is personal development of the reader or other characters, a relationship development (romantic or not), plot development, there must be a purpose to the chapter! slice of life moments are always fun to write, but make sure there is meaning—like perhaps it is to establish the closeness of certain characters to the reader, or to set up for a future scene in your story (foreshadowing).

im not sure if my advice was what you expected, but i hope it helps even just a little bit. thank you so much for your support!!! ill be back to writing soon :)
