In Terms of Willful Ignorance and Dishonesty Snippet 3 | [masterlist]

“Lady Cecilia! Thank goodness you’re here!” Cried Thomas, Leo’s secretary. Nodding, I walked with purpose towards the double doors of the office. Though the soldiers and secretaries used to call me here in the past, I had gotten used to it enough to know when to predict it ahead of time. Leo ran like clockwork, after all. He was painfully easy to read.

“Everyone out!” I announced when I threw open the doors. With tears in their eyes, the soldiers thanked me as they quickly hurried out. And there, seated behind the largest desk, was Leo. After closing the doors behind me, I walked up to him and cupped his cheek. The bags under his eyes marred his handsome face as his lips were turned downwards in an irritable frown.

“You look like shit,” I finally said as I pulled him from his desk. Following dutifully behind me, Leo sighed as he rubbed his forehead.

“A noblewoman such as yourself should not be saying crude words like ‘shit,’” he replied. I snorted.

Leo and I had been engaged since we were children. A rather horrible match, if I do say so myself. Even back then, he always was the honest sort. He spoke what he meant. He did according to his standards of right and wrong. He never saw fit to hide behind pretense. And as we established before, I always was the opposite.

While we got along when we were children and didn’t know any better, our differences caused much conflict the older we became. He had no patience for my tendency to tease and manipulate. He didn’t appreciate my dishonesty. And as for me, I always saw him as a stick in the mud, too proper and prude to have any fun.

Still, every week, we took the time to meet as we always had since the time we met. It was a hassle; I knew he thought of it as such, sitting in the parlor drinking tea when I was sure he had much better things to do. Still, he did it without complaint. He never did. I suppose it fell in line with that dutiful personality of his. He would make sure to be a good fiance, even if his betrothed was a woman he couldn’t bring himself to like.

“So that’s why– Do you see now? She’s trying to use you for her own gain!” Lady Julia exclaimed as she shot up from her seat in the heat of the moment. She was so fervent and earnest it almost made me want to laugh. How adorable. “I understand that you’re a very kind person, Lady Cecilia, but I thought it was important that you know.”

“I see. So Lady Rachel is planning to betray me,” I began with a hum and I played with the rim of my teacup. “Well, it’s about time. I was getting tired of waiting.”

“Exactly, and I– Wait, what?” Stuttered Lady Julia. I did laugh this time.

“Oh? Is it really that surprising that I knew? I know it may surprise some, but I am not blind nor am I deaf. I’ve seen the way Lady Rachel drowns herself in jewelry. I’m not a stranger to the rumors about her dealings with the black market either. It was obvious she was using me for my connections. Anyone could have seen it.”

Breaking Free From the Narrative

Synopsis

The moment I remembered was the moment it all ended. Everything I was, everything I had to live for, was all a lie. My only purpose in life was to be the darkness that allowed her light to shine even brighter. After all, isn't that the job of the titular villain in any novel? So I'm done. I refuse. If the life I wanted is not meant for me, then I will create one of my own.
Breaking Free From the Narrative Chapter 1 | 2k words

The moment I remembered, suddenly everything felt so dumb. So useless. As if I had been making a fool of myself before a laughing audience this whole time, striving after the wind. Did it really have to be now that I finally remembered, the very moment right before I was about to sign the contract that promised her death? The very moment that marked the start of my downfall? Placing down the quill, I let out a sigh.

“I changed my mind. That filthy woman is not worth it. We are done here,” I announced as I stood from my seat. Seeing me walk away so easily, Allaide Caruso, leader of the assassin’s guild, jumped to his feet in confusion at the sight. Noticing the guards make their way in front of the door to cut me off and my personal knight reach for his sword, I paused and glanced back with a brow raised.

“Lady Eligos, please understand. It took a lot of work to meet me today. I don’t show my face before just anyone. If there is no deal to be made, I hope you understand why I can’t just let you walk away so easily,” he said in a voice that couldn’t be described by any other words, but ‘slimy.’ I sighed. How filthy.

I'm the Second Male Lead's Best Friend

Synopsis

I knew it was dumb. I knew it was foolish for me. I knew he loved someone else and that person would never be. His heart would always belong to the female lead, and that was the way it was meant to be. So when he started suddenly acting different a year after we got married... is there something wrong here? Why are you acting as if you are in love with me?

“‘Try showing her my feelings?’”

Henry laughed bitterly as he rubbed his forehead. If only it was that simple. He hurt Adea. Deeply. Not only that, he ruined her trust in him beyond compare. Even if he did love her, she would never accept it. He destroyed that bridge a long time ago. She wouldn’t believe him if he tried. And even if she did, he would be, in effect, spitting upon everything he put her through.

And yet still. He came to love her. When he thought back to the past—the way she smiled for him, the way she helped him through so much—how foolish he was to not see her for who she was. Never would he have attained so much without her. And he missed it. He missed the person she used to be before he ruined her. The only thing he had to show for it was regret.

How he longed to take her hand as they walked side by side. How he longed to pull her closer when they danced together. How he longed to hold her in his arms on the nights he couldn’t help but make love to her. But he couldn’t. He set the tone for their marriage the day he put that ring on her finger. He couldn’t take it back anymore.

“‘Pathetic?’ No, do you know who the most pathetic one out of this whole situation is? It’s me!” I barked with laughter, running a hand through my hair. “Even though you feel nothing towards me, I still keep loving you and doing my best for you as if it would ever make you look even a second my way! It’s pathetic, I know. And yet, even if that’s the case, why do I keep trying–”

In the back of my mind, I found it amusing how I could see his eyes widening through the tears falling from mine. The way his face contorted into grief brought chills down my spine. That was it. That was what I wanted to see. Guilt. Guilt for putting me through this for so long. How delightful, how beautiful.

“What are you expecting? Me to console you?” I asked, taking a sip of tea.

The companion to my side stiffened. Apparently he did not expect the lack of care in my tone.

“You went and fell head over heels for a woman solely because she was kind to you. And instead of backing off when you found out someone else was interested in her, someone with higher status and someone that she was closer to, you decided to pursue her even more. And now here you are hurt that she doesn’t have any feelings for you. Are you an idiot?”

“No, I… I just thought–”

“You thought what?” I questioned with a raise of my brow, finally making eye contact with him. “You thought there was a chance that she’d fall in love with you? Perhaps, but that was a game you chose to play. You went after someone that was already claimed by someone else. So no, you will not be getting any pity from me. You knew what you were getting into from the very start.”
