bittersweet ¬ prologue

masterlist II chapter one

it started with a packet of haribos.

you'd moved from jeju to seoul for university, so freshmen year of college was full of firsts and new opportunities. the first day was probably one of the most nerve-wracking things to ever happen to you, and you'd come out as bi to your family in high school.

alone with no one to talk to, you searched for the music department, but to no avail. thankfully, an adorable then blonde haired male with the cutest cheeks you had ever seen approached you. he offered you a bag of haribos, telling you he had to confiscate them from his best friend. after discovering you were in his music class, he offered his arm to you, telling you he would lead the way with a large smile on his face. and with that, you knew it was game over.

two years later you were still in love with han jisung, and you had no idea how to go about it

CHAPTER ONE

tag, you're it II SOLITAIRE !

THE GROUP OF 13 WATCHED as a girl with pink hair and yellow overalls skipped up the steps, a grey, tattered stuffed animal clutched in her hands. she couldn't have been younger than twenty, yet her attire said otherwise. they watched as she picked up a phone, waiting for the facial recognition to set before she turned around, a wide grin on her face. "neko! i got the last phone!" she was speaking to no one.

a group of three, compromising of a man in a hawaiian shirt, another with a mop of shaggy hair and another, older man in a hat all stared at her, the two youngsters making eye contact. everyone else save for one avoided the female's gaze as looked around the room, her eyes settling on a white haired man hiding behind a hood. just as she stretched her leg out to greet the male, a voice filled the room.

"registration has closed." ichika looked down at her phone, her lips parting as she brought mouse up to watch with her. "there are a total of 14 participants. the game will now commence." the five of spades lit up her phone. "difficulty, five of spades."

"neko, it's a physical game! oh no, i've never ran before." ichika turned to neko, who was now stood beside the man with white hair. "maybe i can get away with speed walking? it worked last time. i think." as always, the pink haired girl didn't notice the odd glances she got from the others, however she did take note of the look the man beside neko gave her. it was a mix of amusement and boredom, something she hadn't seen before. well, directed at her anyway.

"game, 'A Game of Tag." at this, chiku squealed, unknowingly clutching onto the white jacket of the man who she had moved next to in place of neko, bringing mouse up to her chin. "rule. run away from the tagger. clear condition, discover the safe zone hidden in one of the building rooms within the time limit. you clear the game when this objective is fulfilled. time limit, 20 minutes." ichika could do this. she played tag with neko and mouse all the time, sometimes her doctor would even join in and every time she managed to avoid getting tagged, if you ignored the one time years ago when she tripped and sat on the ground crying, causing neko to tap her on the shoulder. "after 20 minutes has passed, the time bomb hidden in the building will explode."

ichika felt movement beside her, and she watched as man beside her, who she'd now decided to call 'neko two' due to his striking features that reminded her of a cat, bend down to pick up a device that was plugged into the wall before walking off, unknowingly pulling ichika with him. after two steps he noticed the pressure on his jacket, and turned to see the wide, childish eyes of ichika staring up at him. he wasn't that much taller than her due to his short stature, and she had a look of innocence about her, however chishiya could see a look behind her eyes he couldn't quite make out. he glanced down to were her hand clutched onto his jacket, nails curled into the fabric.

"neko two? where are you going, why did you stop?" wordlessly, the male slowly peeled her hand off of him, before turning on his heel and making his way towards the elevator. ichika stood there for a second, a look that could only be described as that of a wounded puppy plastered on her face. shaking her head, she turned around and set her gaze on the shaggy haired man and his friend.

it didn't take long for keita and yurina kuruta to realize their daughter was different. it didn't take long for everyone else to notice either. it wasn't hard not to spot the ever-present faraway look in ichika's eyes, nor the way she had a tendency to speak to animals or inanimate objects more then people. by the time she was ten, ichika was yet to grow out of her imaginary friend stage, refusing to speak to anyone other than 'neko'.

by the time she was fifteen, ichika, who now went by "chiku", was placed in the local rehab institute, a place for young 'struggling' teenagers who needed 'help'. it was ironic really, the girl who's surname quite literally translated to mad had been placed in place for the loonies, as so kindly out by her peers. it was there that the girl lived in for 12 more years, locked away in a room on her own, with only a stuffed cat named mouse and neko to keep her company. due to her isolation chiku still held childish qualities. she was still the same sensitive, innocent little girl she always had been, yet it was obvious there was something sharp, calculating eyes. ichika never missed anything, years of neglect and ignorance towards her had caused that. no one told chiku anything, and so she taught herself to keep an eye on everyone and anything.

on the day that marked her twelfth year in confinement, the now pink haired girl was startled to wake up to complete darkness. the light from the camera in the corner of her room was off, the clock on her bedside table was dark, and the small window in the door showed no sign of colour outside. chiku sat up, reaching out to grab mouse, holding him to her chest. slowly, she got up, shuffling over to the door. ichika reached a hand towards the doorknob, and with baited breath, she twisted the handle.

ichika had no idea how long it had been since she was in the 'other world', as she liked to call it. it didn't take long for her to grasp the rules of the games. arrive, take a phone and hope she didn't die. she believed the whole reason to her survival was neko, who always stayed close, whispering in her ear what to do. it was him who noticed the people who had tags on their wrists, and how they spoke of 'the beach'. of course, no one payed the pink haired "ditz", so ichika was safe to eavesdrop as she pleased. she learnt of a man called the 'hatter,' and a scary monster called 'aguni.' 

it didn't take long for ichika to make up her mind.
