Specifically focused on the "rare birds" of our title, our aim is to celebrate less common pairings featuring Crow characters. For the sample, it says that there should be (1) complete work, does that mean the sample itself needs to be a complete work? Or can it be from a completed work?

Like, what if we shorten/cutdown a one-shot to make it fit in the wordcount?

The sample itself needs to be a completed work, not an excerpt from a larger work. We are looking for an example of your ability to write a completed piece under a given word count, as that is a requirement for writers in the zine.

You can list multiple ships in the pairing box, and give summaries for each one in the pitches box! We will consider all of your pairings/ideas when we review applications, but you will only be accepted for (and asked to produce) one piece.

I’m filling the Google form out on mobile and the “examples” section only has text boxes; is there any way to link images on mobile or is alright to just link a drive with all the examples?

A link to a drive/folder with your three samples is fine! Since all three sample questions are required on the form, you'll just need to paste the link in all three. Please make sure that sharing permissions on your drive/folder are set to allow anyone to view the contents.

Alternatively, if you've posted your images on a social media site, such as tumblr, instagram, bluesky, etc, you should be able to copy a link to that post from a mobile device and that is also acceptable!

Yes, it is fine to pitch ideas for two different pairings!

For writers, you can list your ships and pitches together in the same text boxes as indicated on the form. Please note that you will only be accepted for one piece.

For artists, the application has two sections for pitches, as you can commit to creating two pieces for the zine. If you would like to make two pitches, but only feel comfortable committing to one piece in total, you can use both sections and indicate in your notes at the end that you would only like to be accepted for one.

We want the zine to be primarily focused on Crow characters! We're accepting pairings with non-Crow Rooks because the nature of Dragon Age games lends a majority of creators to focus on OC/Canon ships, but for NPCs, we want to keep the scope focused on Crow characters.

We will accept pitches for an AU where a non-Crow NPC is a Crow for purposes of the story (i.e., Lucanis/Josephine where Josephine was recruited into the Crows, rather than her canon backstory), but we will be giving priority to pairings with NPCs who are Crows in canon. AU pairings should involve at least one character who is a Crow in canon.

"traditional" romantic/sexual relationships
polyamorous relationships
queer platonic relationships

Yes, we will accept pitches that feature an original character in place of a canon "Rook" as long as the other elements of our rarepair requirements are met. For pairings that feature a non-Crow Rook (or non-Crow OC), that means the story should primarily engage with Crow themes and settings.

Application Guidelines

Contributor applications for writing and art will open on March 22. We are so excited to see everyone's amazing ideas.

We wanted to give folks the opportunity to start getting their samples together prior to applications opening later this week, so here's the basics you'll need to know before submitting your application.

GENERAL NOTES

We will be requesting pitches for your story ideas and art. That means we'd like you to have a concept for what it is you plan on creating. It doesn't need to be long or super detailed, just a few sentences giving us a general sense of what you're working on. This will help us make sure we have a diverse range of pairings and concepts in the final zine
Works should be created originally for this project, not reused/re-posted.
Please ensure your Crow Rare Pair is eligible before submitting. We'll do our best to let people know if they've submitted a non-eligible pairing so they can resubmit, but obviously it's better for everyone to avoid that. You can learn more about what constitutes a Crow Rare pair here, and if you're unsure about a specific pairing, just ask!

WRITING

Fics of all ratings will be accepted.
Length is between 1,000 to 5,000 words.
Three writing samples are required, all of which should be from the Dragon Age franchise. Excerpts are fine, but at least one sample should be a completed one-shot fic.
Ideally, at least one of your writing samples should highlight a Crow character. This does not necessarily need to be from the pairing you plan to write about, but it would be great if it is.
You can optionally also provide us with your AO3 or other profile of your writing.

ART

Art of all ratings will be accepted (except for for the cover art, which cannot be explicit).
Single-page art and single- or multi-page comics are all accepted.
Art size will be A5 in portrait orientation.
Artists may either pitch an idea for a piece or choose to be paired with a writer to illustrate a story.
Artists can commit to a maximum of two pieces of art.
Three art samples are required, all of which should be from the Dragon Age franchise.
At least one of your art samples should have a Crow character; it is ideal for it to be one of the characters you plan on drawing, but it's not required.
Portfolios are not required but are encouraged.
