Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me" girl you deliver strawberries to the Mayor, you hunt and trade for the district, when you fell at Prim being chosen someone caught you, when you went to Prim people parted for you, when you volunteered EVERYONE stopped. Idk how to tell you but I think you're a pillar of the community.
When I was about thirteen, I remember dreaming a film trailer. When I woke up, I wrote it down and most of it is generic fantasy oppression fight the system by collecting mcguffins stuff -
But a major stylisation of it was that flat, shiny, Tim Burton/Disney CGI. The world was dripping in this. Everything was that oversaturated, over-polished, over-worked CGI.
But every time they collected/destroyed another Mcguffin, that CGI went away. But by bit it transitioned into real sets and practical effects until there is no noticeable CGI at all. Because that’s the system they were fighting - they weren’t being allowed to see what the real world looked like.
Decay and rot and broken infrastructure were being essentially photoshopped over because our villainous leader had no interest or ability to maintain things. It was only ever a temporary solution thought up by someone who thought that transforming a pack of wolves into humans to be her elite guard force was, in fact, a good idea.
(It was not. There was a whole subplot about the secondary antagonists in-fighting and being driven insane by the disconnect between how humans and wolves think and act where the one which were cubs when transformed were desperate to return to something they’d never experience and the patriarch/matriarch of the family knew they were too changed to ever survive as wolves again - definitely stolen from Terry Pratchett)
But, yeah, I’d be tempted to see if that would work, but with a story not dreamed up by a thirteen year old with an obsession with 1970s actors.
HEY, FELLOW HATERS OF INSANELY-BRIGHT CAR HEADLIGHTS, SOMEONE HAS STARTED A PETITION TO REGULATE THEM.
It's an official petition through the Australian Government's e-petition page, which means if it gets enough signatures, it will be tabled in government.
You do have to be an Australian citizen to sign it, BUT!!! PLEASE REBLOG THIS EVEN IF YOURE NOT, because these kind of things have a roll-on effect, and if Australia legislates LED headlights, then other countries may follow.
FYI, the petition asks only for your name and email, and once you've clicked the sign button, they'll send you an email to confirm your signature --- you need to click the confirmation link in the email to have your signature counted.
There is a similar petition in the UK as well! It only has 230 signatures or so so if you are in the UK sign it! Clicky clicky go go go! Let's get these damnable things off the road!
i am supposed to have the energy… to do stuff...?
every? day??
ngl, the CS Lewis quote of: "No one knows how bad they have been until they try to be good", is one that keeps on being in my mind.
Jet from atla is so funny bc like, he's fighting zuko and taunting him being like "bet you wanna use some fire instead of those swords, dont u fireboy" which is a funny thing to say to a guy who is clearly very eager to fight using swords
someone pointed out (1) time how big of an a-hole move it would have seemed like for jet to accuse the kid with the giant visible burn scar on his face of fire bending.
not only was zuko very clearly eager to fight using swords, i'm betting several members of that crowd were also eager to see zuko kick jet's ass with said swords
Epic tag discourse going on here
# There is no good conclusion to come to about Zuko’s scar.
This is the truth. Zuko’s scar is too carefully placed and too old to be anything other than the act of a firebender deliberately burning a child. A child who would have been held or restrained in some way for the damage to be so contained.
That’s the sort of thing that once the tea shop patrons realized that, it didn’t matter where “Li” was from, only that he never be forced to go back.
# There is no
good conclusion to come to
about Zuko’s scar.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
Monkey's first person loved him for years, and then his first person had a little boy, and after a generation plus five more years of love, Monkey was feeling a bit worn. Here is his diagnosis photo:
Monkey is a local creature, so once we agreed on a treatment (spa, bald spot treatment, wound repair, new eyes, seam tightening), he was hand delivered by his family.
He started with a spa:
As you can see, the black turned white fairly quickly, but it was almost paint like in texture. I actually wrote to his family, to ask if he had ever had a paint job! The answer was no, it was just oils and dirt from years of an adventurous life. So he had another bath, and another, and a LOT of hand scrubbing, and gentle, one hair at a time, oil removal. Oils aren't uncommon, but this paint like density is. I actually followed the treatment used to remove oil from birds and mammals who get caught in oil spills, and that was eventually the ticket to restore Monkey's fur.
Here's his heart being made and installed with a bit of his original stuffing:
You can see he got modern, hypoallergenic polyfiber stuffing as part of his spa to replace the foam (which disintegrates with time).
Here he is all better! He even got a new nose based on one of his baby photos (his face had been so thickly coated originally, we didn't know it was missing till he was clean!).
You can also see a small fur transplant he needed on the side of his neck for a larger bald spot in the last photo.
In any case, Monkey was ready to go home, but he had to hang out at the hospital a few more days, till his original person was off work. Then both generations came to pick him up. Their reaction:
Absolutely incredible!!!!!!!!!!! I’m still in shock ! Thank you so much !
city of death and the enemy of the world are strong proof that you do not, in fact, need to have a contemporary human companion to make doctor who watchable
Classic Who - Night Changes

The good news: you get to pick your new soulmate! (You can define "soulmate" however you want: platonic/romantic/partners in crime/etc. But they will be in your life, constantly.)
The bad news: you don't get to pick where they come from.
Spin this wheel until you get a fandom with characters that you recognize. As soon as you do, stop. One of those people* is going to be a constant presence in your life, whether you like it or not. So choose wisely.

This is an appreciation post for Nausicaa, Princess of Phaeacia.
In general she's a surpsingly well rounded character with a neat wee arc of unrequited love, but no grudge and I care about her deeply
I think tumblr should preserve the following/mutuals badge on anons. It'd make the website worse but in a really good way. it should be applied retroactively too
(I think we all know this is a race between "Rose" and "The Eleventh Hour." But I included the other major recommended starting episodes just to see how this goes.)
Don't.
I loved DW for years. I alienated friends with my obsession. I used a TARDIS purse for about 2 years. I have a TARDIS bookshelf and the first 2 seasons on DVD. I went to a DW convention. I stood in line for Day of the Doctor tickets dressed as Rose in her pink poodle skirt with beehive hair, and I handed out banana bread with ball bearings.
ONLY TO LOSE IT ALL ANYWAY. It's embarrassing how bad it is now, and David Tennant is a disgraceful human.
I mean, watch it if you want, but personally, I wouldn't set yourself up for that disappointment.
Maybe you could watch the first 4-6 seasons or the Original/Old stuff. But personally, I wouldn't even bother going past Amy and Rory. Clara was my last companion before it got really, truly unbearably awful... But honestly, but the 200th episode (Day of the Doctor) was when it started really letting me down.... the WAY they HAD BILLIE AND DAVID AND WASTED IT (and also the retcon of Gallifrey).
Pushing back a little bit because while I understand your frustration and disillusionment and its valid, its another to write the entire show off just because of that for everyone.
The flaws and failures of the latter seasons don't (or shouldn't) erase the fondness and enjoyment you had, and the show is such a long lasting cultural phenomenon that imo its worth it from that perspective as well.
The disappointment is so fair but I think misplaced on a post celebrating the show and people having fun with it
