She didn't know when the scrutiny and every minute detail of her life began, but she knew her father's eyes were bearing into her skull every moment she passed him in their vast home hiding in the skirts of her mother.
The Miyajima clan was not a place for women or girls to exist without a blade dissecting their every movement, if one toe was out of line- it meant punishment. Akane knew that, her mother had warned her of that, icy hands always nursing the welts and bruises on her arms.
Perhaps it's why she loved the wintery season, the snowfall and ice decorating the landscape around their home as she tossed a temari ball in the air reminded her of her mother- comforting and elegant. Yet it had the temperament of her father- biting, bitter, cold and dead.
The temari ball hit her square on the head, bringing the little girl out of her thoughts and making her fall back into the snow crying as her forehead began to turn red from the impact. She wanted to call for her mother but the same cold, piercing eyes from her father made her tears start to cease immediately, sniffles replacing tears caused by pain and a shock to her system- if she ran to him, she would be dismissed for being hysterical over a silly injury...
So she stayed quiet, sitting in the snow as her kosode began to grow wetter the longer snow clung to it, she didn't want to move, not with him watching... And when he walked away from the doorway, Akane quickly got to her feet, stumbling through the snow to get to her mother even if it meant tracking clumps of melting snow in her wake.
Perhaps the scrutiny began that moment, but she always felt his distance before her silly little toy hit her on the head. Which begged the question: What would have happened if she had been born a boy? Would he be proud to show her off to the people like other nobles were with their children? Would he allow her to learn what the other members of the family were learning? How to fight, how to hurt others for money? They protected the people, but hey also hurt them...
Akane had to wonder if he'd be proud of her if she ever did something like that as her mother cradled her and soothed the goose egg forming on her forehead. Maybe... yet for now, it was her mother's soothing presence that began to wash those thoughts and the world around them away...
