Rook Intro Hour: Book Club

Happy Friday! I hope everyone is having a fun Veilguard Appreciation Week!

How it works: I ask you a question about your Rook(s) and you answer it with as much brevity or verbosity as you desire. You can do this whenever you want, and I’ll reblog it + add some comments! There’s no time limit— if you want to do the older ones, they are collected here! (The post is updated on Fridays!)

Today’s Questions: If your Rook joined book club (either voluntarily, or because someone bribed them lol) would they think of the books the others picked? [check the entries!] What would Rook suggest? How much would they participate in the discussion? What (if anything) would they enjoy most about it? Arguing? Gossiping about the characters?

Be creative, and have fun! Thanks for sharing!

Jin Laidir doesn't really read, and declined the invitation to book club - they don't have the patience for it, and prefer their stories to be spoken; get them in a tavern with some of the Lords of Fortune and they'll spend hours one-upping each other with extremely exaggerated stories. So they'll probably read a couple chapters, get bored, maybe skip around in the middle and then have no idea what anyone at book club is talking about. But then they discover that they enjoy being read to, and that Lucanis can be very easily cajoled into reading for them while they work on knitting or embroidery (they would love podcasts). They would not be able to guess any of the twist endings, and they would favor more action-oriented stories like Harding, the sort of things the Lords would brag about in a tavern. Not a fan of romance; Jin is on the aromantic spectrum and sort of starts to get it when they meet Lucanis but not really, and has a sort of lightbulb moment when discussing whether or not the romance in the books is realistic or not.

If they had to pick something they would probably choose something like a collection of Rivaini pirate stories. And then they wouldn't even finish it.

Laertes Mercar is more of a nonfiction reader but is still kind of bummed no one invited them to book club. Just because they're a big tough warrior type doesn't mean they're not also a huge nerd! They find the book club notes and try to casually ask Bellara if they can borrow one of the books sometime, and of course she feels horrible that Rook was left out and immediately lets Rook borrow all of them, plus her copy of the next book, which is definitely some kind of romance that Lucanis picked out. Laertes likes it, though I imagine the club is rather polarized; Laertes prefers it to Hallowed Halls because while they enjoy some romance, they don't like the enemies to lovers trope - sometimes people are just assholes and there's nothing sexy about it. Is sometimes annoying because they will nitpick on historical or scientific accuracy.

Laertes would worry too much about picking a book that everyone likes until Bellara reminds them that their pick just has to be something that they like, and they finally go with the 500 year old diary of an ordinary woman that has a lot of details about how people lived in olden times. It is surprisingly well received by the rest of the club.

lol, love Jin not finishing their own book, very iconic of them <3 Maybe the enthusiastic readers can take turns reading to them?

And that’s such a fun/unique pick from Laertes! I would def want to read!

Thanks for sharing !

Osteanna is happy to join book club but is also half dragged by Lucanis and Emmrich. Lucanis loves having her around and Emmrich needs another undead expert to help his arguments. She definitely has a good time. She probably picks an adventure novel.

Arrin gets dragged into book club by Emmrich. He's excused after his first book pick. He definitely picks some horror book in an effort to make people squirm. I don't think it works but they let him bow out anyway.

Vitas loves book club he drags Taash along and has fun finding books they'll like

I’m glad she has fun! And that Emmrich has some back up lol

Lmaaao no, I don’t think most of the VG book club would mind horror

And I’m glad he has so much fun!

Thanks for sharing !

Rook says they’re not much of a reader and this is mostly true. They don’t have time to sit down and get through a book when the world’s ending. But they may or may not have snuck a few of Bellara’s serials into their room. Neve knows. Bellara knows. Everyone knows. Rook bemoans that they can’t have any secrets around these people.

They don’t join the “official” book club, but they do get together with Bellara and Lucanis to have a “girls night” (the fact that neither Rook nor Lucanis is a girl is irrelevant, it’s girls night). They’ll get comfortable on the pantry or Bellara’s workshop and braid each other’s hair and talk about the serials. They’re going through Crossed Daggers and Hearts right now. Lucanis still thinks Giulia can do so much better than Ricardo, but Bellara thinks the whirlwind romance is exciting. Rook agrees with Lucanis, but verbally agreeing with Bellara often leads to a sneak peak at the serial she’s working on.

Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. Please ignore the man behind the mask, he’s fine. Everything’s fine.

Cole on the Veilguard Companions

I started replaying Inquisition and I had too many Thoughts about how Cole would talk about the VG companions so now I’m making it everyone else’s problem. Enjoy!

-

Bellara: Tired eyes, tired hands. Cracked skin by her nails. A history unknown, forgotten, distorted. She can fix it. She must fix it. The hummingbird must keep flying so she can fix it.

Davrin: A false sacrifice. A false promise. He was supposed to die. Why doesn’t he die? Pride of a father watching his son learn. Always learning. Too clever for him to keep up, but that’s the thrill of the chase.

Emmrich: A lone heart beats in the halls. It races at the thought of stopping. Will he join the ones he cares for? Will he be cared for? Yes. Curiosity will always care for him.

Harding: Ma’s soup brings her comfort, but the fire to keep it warm burns too hot, too bright. An anger burning. Should it burn brighter? Why doesn’t it burn brighter? Magic taken and taken back. The stone sings her name.

Lucanis: Two souls in one home, neither can fit. Too tight. Tight like the clothes grandmother put him in, they will never fit. Choking under the collar, choking on the blood spilt beneath the water. He is suffocating, but he survives, despite it all.

Neve: Always a mystery, always something missing. Helping helps. Helping distracts. A warm heart frozen over. It’s easier this way. Letting it thaw will bring Trouble.

Taash: A broken language sitting on a broken tongue. Fire burns the consonants away. Too much of one or the other, yet never enough of either. Never enough for her. Through struggle, they find who they are.

2. What is their grooming routine?

Rook didn’t get to have one when they were enslaved, so they take full advantage of the luxuries of the Lighthouse. The second they found a room full of hot springs, they stripped down and took the longest bath they’ve ever had. They might’ve even fallen asleep in there. Their hair is hard to manage when it’s tangled and dirty, so they try to put it in a braid before bed. Sometimes they’re too exhausted to remember and they spend a good chunk of the morning cursing in various languages as they try to detangle it. Their makeup routine begins and ends with a simple philosophy: “Yesterday’s eyeliner is today’s smoky eye.”

10. What objects do they always carry around with them?

If they’re leaving the Lighthouse for whatever reason, they aren’t going anywhere without their bow and their swords. Plus their lightning flasks. And some healing potions. And a few poisons just in case. As for the rest of their stuff, they keep some snacks in their bag in case the trip ends up being longer than anticipated, some extra gold in case they need to bribe their way out of something (or if they see something shiny in the market), and some of Assan’s treats. He’s a good boy, he deserves them.

tell me about rook’s scars and/or tattoos! as much or as little detail as you feel like :)

Avatar

Rook’s most prominent face scars are actually their newest. They got them when on the job for the Lords with that double-crossing noble. He was an easy kill, but rich people can hire mercenaries to start a cave in. One guy got a good hit across Rook’s eye. Thankfully, there wasn’t permanent damage. It was another to add to the collection. They would’ve been able to see if girls really did like scars that much if Isabela hadn’t “volunteered” them to join Varric on his quest to find the fucking Dread Wolf.

The scars on their arms are small, uniform, and easy to recognize by anyone who’s been around Venatori or most Altus mages. Some blood magic involves sacrifice. More minor uses are for the every day. Rook’s slaver used blood magic on the galley slaves to keep them rowing past the point of exhaustion. They hid those at first, but slowly grew to accept them and wear them with pride. Rook’s Rivaini - they wear their stories.

As for their tattoos, the sleeve on their left arm is a map of the route the galley would take around the coast of Tevinter. They went in a lot of circles, making stops at ports to trade goods - the goods were usually slaves. As for the geometric tattoo on their right forearm, they got that one on a sticky table at The Hilt after too many drinks. The only story behind that one is the thought process of “that looks cool, let’s do it!”

Random Banter!

Enjoy some banter I made up for Rook and the rest of the party!

~~~
Lucanis: Your employers, why are they called the Lords of Fortune?
Rook: They’re not exactly my employers anymore. You know now that I think about it, I don’t think they were ever really my employers.
Lucanis: You performed contracts for them.
Rook: Not really. We kinda just worked together. One of us gets a tip on a sunken ruin or an old legend worth looking into, and a bunch of us would investigate.
Lucanis: Were you compensated for this?
Rook: Kinda? If we found something, we could usually keep whatever we could carry.
Lucanis: Mierda. My contract negotiator would like a word with all of you.
~~~

Rook: Gold and glory.

Lucanis: Hm?

Rook: You asked why we’re called the Lords of Fortune. We’re after gold and glory.

Lucanis: Lords don’t always have glory. Gold, usually, but rarely glory.

Rook: I didn’t name the group.

Lucanis: So which are you looking for? Gold or glory?

Rook: Right now, a bath and a warm bed.

~~~
Rook: Hey, Spite! 10 gold says I kill more than you next fight.
Lucanis: Don’t encourage him.
Spite: It. Is. Done.
Lucanis: This is only going to come out of my coin purse.
Rook: Awww you already know I’ll win!
~~~

Harding: There’s no way you won.

Rook: You’re still mad about Wicked Grace?

Harding: You cheated! I know you cheated!

Rook: The cards don’t lie, Harding.

Harding: The cards don’t, but you do.

~~~
Rook: You’re taking requests for dinner, right?
Bellara: Oh, yes! I can’t promise it’ll come out the way you want it to, but I can find some recipes. What were you thinking?
Rook: There was this chocolate cake with some kind of raspberry sauce that I bought from a bakery in Rivain once. Haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
Bellara: I can do that! But I don’t think cake really counts as dinner.
Rook: It’s dinner if it’s during dinner time!
~~~

Taash: How come Isabela let you back in?

Rook: I was never “kicked out,” really, I just…was invited to help out Varric for a bit.

Taash: That’s getting kicked out.

Rook: It was politics. And she would’ve done the same thing.

~~~
Taash: Does Isabela know?
Rook: Know what?
Taash: That you have a crush on her?
Rook: What? I don’t-
Taash: I can smell it.
Rook: That’s…It’s not…
Taash: Relax, everyone has a crush on Isabela.
Rook: Had. I *had* a crush on Isabela. I was ten. And yes, she knows. Still hasn’t let me live that one down.
So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
  1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
  2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
  3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
  4. Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
  5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
  6. Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
  7. Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
  8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
  9. What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
  10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)
these are fantastic!
It's so funny to see people talking about Lucanis and Davrin's banters and how they don't like each other because somehow in my game whenever I'm at the Lighthouse those two are often hanging out. Just trading barbs while watching over Assan, or over coffee in the kitchen. I'm convinced that Davrin said his "So you're an abomination huh. Well I'm watching you." line one day and Lucanis, who was functioning on two hours of sleep and with bags under his eyes, just went "Right. Let's do this over dinner then" not to sound flirty or anything, but because he was already in the kitchen preparing food. And thus the intricate rituals began: "Just so you know, I'm watching you, and the most effective way to do this is to spend time with you I guess - Alright. Just so you know, I'm into you too. I know your secrets as well." HILARIOUS. One of the best duo in Veilguard if you ask me.
Davrin: I’m watching you, Abomination. I know your secrets.
Lucanis: I know yours too, Grey Warden.
Rook:
Rook: So are you two gonna fu-
13. Do they prefer foreplay or are they impatient?
It depends on the situation. They’re no stranger to back alley trysts where the goal was to get each other off as quickly as possible before they got caught. No time for foreplay then. But if they have the luxury of time, they’re more than happy to take full advantage of it.
Though if we’re being honest, the flirty banter is basically foreplay anyway. Rook and Neve could be exchanging quips back and forth one minute and dragging each other away for some alone time the next. They usually know just what to say to get the other riled up.
🩷 Spicy questions for your Rook + their romanced partner 🩷
  1. What is Rook's sexual orientation and identity? What are their pronouns?
  5. Is Rook down for casual one-night stands?
  6. Is Rook attracted to anyone (specific person or just negative qualities) they shouldn’t be and why? (bonus points if it's not their love interest)
  7. Does Rook have any kinks? Do they act on it or just think about it?
  8. What's Rook's favorite thing their partner can do for them in bed (hair-pulling, pinned wrists, etc.)? Is there something they don't like at all?
  9. What does Rook like to wear and what do they like seeing their partner in (e.g. lingerie)?
  10. What is Rook's favorite part of their partner’s body?
  11. What is Rook's favorite intimate non-sexual thing to do with their partner?
  12. What gets them both in the mood?
Rogue Trader Character Building Questions
With the DLC approaching, I thought I would put together a list of 25 OC building questions to ask yourself or have others ask you! Mainly just background stuff, not much in the way of in-game choices, but I hope they can maybe inspire someone or help shift the ol' writer's block if applicable 🧭
BACKGROUND:
1. Where are they from? What is their homeworld like? Do they miss it? 2. What is their Origin? Who were they before they became a Rogue Trader? 3. Do they have a good relationship with their family? Who were they closest to growing up? 4. What does their name mean? Is it significant? 5. Describe a memory from childhood they think of fondly.
CHARACTER & CONVICTIONS:
6. What is their Conviction? How adherent are they to it? Does it change at all over the course of the game? 7. Was there a defining moment in their life that influenced their Conviction? 8. What was their Triumph? Do they take pride in it? 9. What was their Darkest Hour? How does it affect them today? 10. How do they feel about becoming a Rogue Trader? How easily do they take to being the head of the von Valancius dynasty?
RELATIONSHIPS:
11. Who amongst their retinue are they closest to? 12. Who amongst their retinue do they clash with the most? 13. Are they romantically involved with anyone? Do they wish to be? 14. Who was the most important person in their life prior to becoming a Rogue Trader? Is that person still in their life now? 15. How do they feel towards Theodora? Had they met before? Were they close?
SKILLS & EXPERTISE:
16. What is their Archetype? 17. What are their strengths in combat? What are their weaknesses? 18. How do they approach conflict? Do they tackle problems head-on, or is coercion favourable to them? 19. Which three skills are of the most value to them? 20. Do they have a talent or hobby that would surprise others?
APPEARANCE & PERSONALITY:
21. Do they have any notable markings? Scars, birthmarks, tattoos, etc.? 22. Do they have any augmentations? Were these installed out of necessity, or as a cosmetic choice? 23. How do they hold themselves? Is the persona they show the world different to who they truly are? Who is privy to the ‘real’ them? 24. Do they place value in how their protectorate sees them? Does this sway their decisions at all? 25. Wildcard: Share a fun fact, random thought, or headcanon about them!
