today was just like any other day in your mundane life on land.
wake up, go to the diner, work from opening to the start of the night shift, walk to the bookstore, buy nothing, and go home. it was the same routine every day. same path to the diner. same path to the bookstore. same path home. frankly, it was a miracle you’d lasted this long above water—though anytime you even hinted at the idea of leaving, pearl would shut it down immediately. always with the same line: “after abandoning me for six years? you know it was so hard to be away from you during thee day time but you knew i couldn't stand staying in the water all the damn time and you didn't care. you need to make up for thse six years. understood?” and it was always followed by that look that made your stomach twist with guilt.
so you stayed.
you were on your way to the bookstore now—the one nestled at the end of the boardwalk, just before the shoreline curved out of sight. susie’s stories. you never bought anything. you couldn’t afford to. but susie never minded. she’d let you wander the narrow aisles, let you sit cross-legged between the shelves and read until closing, when she'd gently tap your shoulder and say, “go on, hun. get some rest.”
it was the only part of your day you ever looked forward to. not just because of the books—but because they let you pretend. for an hour or two, you could be someone else, somewhere else. not a girl trapped in a town she doesn’t belong in. not someone who once belonged to the sea. in those pages, you weren’t stuck. you weren’t anything at all. and maybe that was the best part.
but today, as you rounded the corner past the bait shop and the boarded-up souvenir stand, something broke the rhythm.
