I decided to make a post about cancer, how to possibly get it detected early, and some good places to donate to. Hundreds of thousands die of cancer yearly, so it's important to understand it!

This post will problably made over several days, maybe even weeks, because despite watching loved ones die from it, I still need to research to make sure the information I get for you all is true.

I think I ran out of characters on the post, so I'm reblogging to continue it.

i once took an uber driven by an eccentric older gentleman who told me about his young man’s travels in nepal. he said that in a town too small for any formal hospitality, he had been hosted overnight by a nepali family who spoke no english. he spoke no nepali. i asked what they did all night. with an air of matter of factness, he said they shared drinks and talked. “there we sat,” he said, “sipping i’m not sure what. it was white, and strong. and they’d tell me a story in nepali. didn’t get a word. but i could tell when they’d finished and we’d all laugh together. then i’d tell a story in english. they didn’t get a word. but when i finished, we all laughed together. lovely night. lovely, lovely people.” i think this baby gets it

I can never leave Tumblr because after years of sporadic therapy utterly failed to even approach the core of my problem some random tumblr user was like “I processed my trauma by writing a 10,000 word work of filthy fanfic erotica” and I was like “fuck it I’ve tried everything else” and now I’m 17 chapters and 20,000 words deep into an unpublishable work of obscenity and after careful literary analysis with one of the Beloved Mutuals I have come to some Terrible Revelations about my childhood and may now continue the process of Healing. shit ton of people are repeating the thing about hayao miyazaki saying AI art is an "insult to life itself" and just as a reminder he was talking about the zombies that team made that were intended to be scary in how much they shook, but instead reminded him of his disabled friend. the insult to life itself was referring to the team trying to make scary real symptoms that people live with.

it was a quote about ableism. if he has said other things about AI type stuff, that is a different thing. but that specific quote was about ableism.

When he talks about technology here, he means a process of procedural animation to make a rigged 3D model move. An "evolution sim" type AI that slowly hones in on an efficient solution by iterating on random noise.

(It's called "AI" but AI is a meaningless buzzword and is also used to describe stuff like "video game enemies moving and behaving randomly" - this is not the same kind of "AI" as ChatGPT or Dall-E or so on, check out this video for an example of the kind of AI Miyazaki was reacting to in this clip; there's no potential issues of plagiarism because this sort of thing doesn't use training data in the same way).

Now, in the full clip, Miyazaki does show disdain for the idea of "making a machine that can draw like people do", he's firmly in the camp that creating art should be enjoyable, and why would you want to automate yourself out of it, but he isn't calling GenAI as a whole "an insult to life itself".

He is very specifically talking about the kind of "body horror" that's really just using physical disability for shock value. Please don't take that quote out of context.
