One of the more ridiculous parts of being self-aware of your mental illness is realizing you are having an anxiety attack and just being…annoyed. Like jfc I have things to do I don’t have time for this.

There’s such a delicious enjoyment for me in scenes that are fights between two people that are so brutal because of how intimate their relationship is. They WILL bring up ancient history, they WILL stab you in all your weakest parts, and yeah most sexy of all, they WILL say things to each other they can never unsay. It’s fighting as an act of intimacy (derogatory). Evil sex scene. Nothing better

🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

I feel like my answer to this is going to be so boring because I don't tend to write particularly fantastical stuff, and most of the research I do do tends to be about sexual topics. Though there was definitely a point in my life where I would have never imagined looking up topics like circumcision rates and the legality of sex toys in Thailand. I did recently go down a rabbit hole about snakes native to Thailand, but I don't really think that really classifies as weird. Just kind of normal research of an area/culture you aren't familiar with.

Oh, once for a RNM fic, I spent a whole day lost in researching faraday cages. It never became relevant in the fic, but it was an interesting dive (of which I have retained next to nothing). So maybe that. But also I was writing a fic about an alien character who can channel lightning and his scientist girlfriend, so in context it wasn't that weird.

Also I actually purchased a pair of sock garters when writing Latent just to see what they would actually feel like. I completely forgot about that until just now. Maybe that counts as a little weird?

a lot of life can be persevered thru by secretly playing pretend in your mind the whole time

Folks, backup your Tumblrs, for real this time

To be clear, I don't have any news about any impending doom. But I've heard a bit more about what's going on with staff after the layoff of last week, and there are even less people than I thought still working here.

I don't think even the current staff know what's going to happen, but honestly, I don't see how the high ups could even pretend to intend to keep this place open while virtually unstaffed.

And of course, if the most despicable thing happens, you can find me at @javi@goblin.band from any fediverse platform 🤷

for reference, OP is a former employee of Tumblr who tries to keep up to date with tumblr’s inner workings. please back your blogs up.

In your blog settings you have the ability to initiate a blog export, and this will generate a backup for your blog.

Fair warning though, if you've been on the platform for a long time this archive is likely to be quite hefty in file size. This blog I have had for 5 years with 22k posts, and the export from tumblr came to be 48GB. My previous blog I made in 2011 and has 95k posts, so needless to say I did not use tumblr's built in export to back that one up.

If you want more control over exactly what you back up from your blog, I recommend that you use tumblr-utils instead. It allows you to backup specific tags, post types, and to ignore posts that you did not create (reblogs where you've added a comment count as a post you created, to be clear).

To use it:

  1. download and install python 2.7
  2. download tumblr-utils
  3. create an application on tumblr to get an api key
  4. extract the tumblr-utils zip and open the tumblr_backup.py file in notepad
  5. search for "API" and paste in your OAuth consumer key
  6. then go back to the folder where you extracted tumblr-utils and choose open folder in terminal / command prompt, or type cmd.exe in the address bar while inside the folder

now in the window that opens it should show the current path, and you can type "py -2 .\tumblr_backup.py [your options] [your blog name]" and hit enter. Example:

Backing up just my original posts from this blog with this command came to 632MB rather than 48GB, and also gave me the option to save my posts in JSON format which will be useful for converting my posts to a new format for self hosting.

On that note I'm currently looking into figuring out a simple (and ideally free) way of self hosting a static site blog that utilises activitypub, and also converting my old posts to re-host on said blog.

This post series by maho.dev on implementing activitypub with any static site is my primary source of guidance atm if you also want to try figure that out yourself, as well as having an explanation for why you'd even want to do this if you don't already know

but if tumblr goes down before I get things sorted and write up a post about it then i'll be reporting back on it via my bsky, mastodon, and toyhouse accounts

if you dont have an account on any of these I'll also be sharing an update via my personal site's RSS feed, link of which includes an explanation of what RSS is and some feed readers you can use, I highly recommend checking it out as getting a feed reader is going to be the best way you can stay connected with people if they scatter across the internet!

tldr: download tumblr-utils to backup your blog more efficiently, introduce yourself to RSS and get a feed reader to stay connected with people, consider saving mine so you can find out how to self host your blog later if tumblr goes down

post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character

Lmao going straight for the question most likely to get me in trouble, I see 😅

It's actually hard to think of something because I've kinda been out of touch with fandom (like all of them) for a little while now. But I was reading some fanfic over the weekend and honestly, idk how unpopular this opinion is because I know a number of people who agree with me but it does keep showing up in fic and it bugs me so...

Vegas. Is. A. Wine. Bitch. Ok? So many fics have him casually drinking whiskey all the time, and yet in canon, Vegas is notable in that unlike Kinn, Korn and Gun, he usually has a glass of either champagne (in public) or red wine (at lunch at home, with Porsche by the pool, with Pete in the "I will consume you' trailer). The only time we ever see him drinking dark spirits is at the meeting with Gun and Korn in episode 7, and honestly, he does not look like he's enjoying it very much. This is a guy who prefers wine, and he's definitely a snob about it. Please people.

But like I said, idk if it's an unpopular opinion, per se, so much as a personal pet peeve, but there you go.

God I love the collaborative nature of fanfiction. the yes and of fanfiction. the oh, what if nature of fanfiction. The endlessly unfolding, expanding, fractalizing, personalizing of fanfiction. The, I hear you, I love you, but I want to see it through another lens, of fanfiction. The way canon endlessly spawns ideas, and each spark of concept prompts another dozen lights to glow.

It is deeply human to refract a story through yourself so it can shine a light on that one specific emotion you needed to find. And it is the best of humanity that our instinct is to take what we have made, and share it with others.
