hey does anyone have any Monster Culture™ ideas

OH BOY DON’T I HAVE A FEW IDEAS

• Monsters live in super close knit communities, it’s fairly normal and completely socially acceptable for acquaintances and friends to just show up at each other’s doors unannounced.

• For that reason most monster households have at least 1 extra chair and whatnot to be able to accommodate any visitors, on specific holidays and stuff you even set the table for an extra person even if no one ever shows up.

• It was for that exact reason that Pyrare isolating himself from pretty much everyone was a huge deal. That’s just completely outside the norm for Monsters.

• Speaking of which Monsters are also a lot more physically affectionate cultural. It is very common for friends to hold hands, cuddle and whatnot and actually is the status quo. They are like bees, they huddle together for warmth and safety. - Hence why Pyrare has a habit of being overly affectionate and not realising the other’s aren’t 100% on board because to him it’s as natural as saying please and thank you.

• Monster shapes rarely care much about different “shape types” like pyramids, pentagons and so on unlike normal shapes do. Most monsters have mixed heritage and actually they did not even have names for different “shapes” before they adapted it from normal shapes.

• Alchemy and making potions for healing purposes is common for Monsters, most families have their own special recipes and practices for them too. (Why? Because I think they’re neat that’s why)

• Stars and the night sky are a huge deal in Monster culture, you use it for navigation, to tell the time of year, it is believed to have prophetic significance and so many linguistic things revolve around stars for them. (By that I mean that they have a lot of metaphors and sayings connected to it)

• Also speaking of sayings they have a lot of folk weather sayings (just like Slovak has pranostiky omg!! What a completely coincidental occurrence)

• They eat with their hands or they drink stuff from bowls. Who needs cutlery when most animals are already bite sized and also when they have sharp claws?

• Do not be mistaken however. They still have a lot weirdly specific and niche dining etiquettes and customs.

• Also because they only have a single eye it is considered a very precious thing that must be protected. Illnesses that lead to blindness and vision problems are viewed as tragedy since monsters already have worse vision even without any additional complications. Good vision in monsters is seen as the pinnacle of good health. (Pyrare tends to fuss over Gold reading in the dark a lot because of it.)

• They function purely on a trading and gifting basis, money does not exist in Monster communities.

I agree wholeheartedly and would like to add on to these!

  • Hospitality is a HUGE thing for Monsters. In addition to an extra chair for guests, and they fact that they don't use money, hosting and visiting each other stimulate their economy(? Idk what to call it)
  • Monsters immediately offer a food or drink once a guest steps inside their home, it conveys compassion and is a form of respect to the guest.
  • Monsters usually say "No" to the first offering of a meal, but give their true answer when asked again. (Which is almost always a yes)
  • Respect is heavily based on how a Monster treats a guest in their home; the more hospitality they have, the more respected they are. Monsters will mention how they were treated at (Monster)'s Home and that inspires others to either visit or stay away.
  • While Monsters are very affectionate with each other, most don't look for love until halfway through their life.
  • Monsters never have more than five kids, but those kids are never born in the same decade. An eldest Monster could be an adult while their younger sibling is just being born.
  • Monsters spend their childhood absorbing knowledge; through books, other Monsters, playing outside, etc. They have a long learning period of their lives that they usually spend by mastering a certain trade or skill. (EX: Sewing -> 100+ stitching techniques, how to make and dye different fabrics, looming, lace-making, producing clothes, designs, and some stuff in textiles) Like FULL mastery. They have around 3/4 of learning done by the end or their childhood before they pause while in teen years before continuing or switching their studies in their adult life.
  • Monsters actually view their elder years as their "prime". They don't hold their childhood as valuable as their more adult years.
  • Monsters dress very modestly, robes and cloaks are the main fashion trend. However the patterns and designs change every few decades.
  • All Monsters cover up their triangle/heart thing, it's reserved only for their lover.
  • Majority Monsters wear a homemade crest on their chest to show that they're past childhood, but some Monsters either don't wear them or opt for different expressions of age.

Omg yesss I love all of these and I agree 100% and I feel the need to expand upon some of these :3

  • Respecting elders is a huge part of monster culture, even adults amongst themselves have such respect however small the age gap.
  • Speaking of which as Burnall (can I call you that? Or do you have a different nickname? /genq) mentioned elder years are seen as prime years and therefore unlike with us (and I assume normal shapes) ages and being older are actually both very desirable, monsters do not find asking people for their age offensive in fact it is a part of etiquette. To NOT ask someone how old they are especially when you are both adults is seen as a little weird and almost rude.
  • Cheating and any kind of disloyalty in relationships are HIGHLY frowned upon. Relationships generally take years to form and it is expected of couples to stay together for life so anyone disrespecting such a precious thing is seen as utter blasphemy. Same goes for divorce, that’s just not something you can really do without others judging you for it.
  • Modesty is a big deal. Dub with his sleeveless and quite tight (for monster standard) attire is absolutely blasphemous. That is part of the reason why he did it- it was a form of rebellion.
  • Parenting is very important to monsters, having someone to pass down your knowledge and skills to is seen as super important. Even the very few childless monsters out there generally find themselves someone to mentor.

Also I had to add these

• Because of the alchemy thing a lot of Monsters own small amounts of poison in their homes since they are also used as remedies however this has led to many sad folk tales being centred around poisonings.

• Also speaking of poison most alcohols Monsters consume are deadly to other shapes because they contain an absurd amount of toxins. I’m talking like Datura levels of poison. As a shape taking a few sips of that can leave you with side effects ranging from comas to schizophrenia to death.

• Speaking of alcohol it is fairly common in small amounts since it warms monsters up and they tend to live in very cold environments. Also a thing younger monsters tend to do to get drunk is to shrink a little when they drink so that it takes less substance to actually feel something. This is generally regarded as unsafe and quite frankly stupid amongst older monsters (although plenty are guilty of doing it in their youth)

Pink corruption headcannon:

Pyrare can never remember the name of any song ever. Whenever he and Gold are listening to disks instead of telling him to play a specific song name he will start speaking in riddles like “that one song on the yellow disk…. you know? The one that begins with the violoncello? Ajacenus likes that one.” And the worst part is he primarily listens to classical music so he can’t even tell Gold the lyrics and every time this happens it takes a good chunk of time till Gold finds the one Pyrare meant. By now anytime Pyrare even begins to request a song Gold physically has to restrain himself because he’s about to waste 20 minutes of his life on a 3 minute song.
