You and Matt had gone on a handful of dates and even though nothing was “official,” you could both see a future in your connection. Especially when he asked to meet your dog, which you found really cute. Every time you hung out, Matt asked if you had taken any cute pictures of the fur baby, always smiling and patiently gazing on your screen as you swiped through the various photos of the fluff ball.
Puka was your baby, you coddled her more than some parents did with their own children. She had been there for you through thick and thin, showing you the same unconditional love most dogs had for their owners, but…you were nervous. Puka was nervous, her energy always reflected your own, she knew you too well.
An array of knocks on the door lets you know he’s here. The wagging tail and barks make your heart pound in your ears, your eyes watering from anxiety as you crack open the door, just enough to make sure it’s the same, familiar shaggy-brown hair.
And it is.
You had her leash sat on the table by the door, but for some reason, she’s pawing through the door. She’s not even barking - she’s whimpering, trying to find her way to the chirpy voice that cheers in a soft tone, “Hi Puka, can I come in? I got you a toy!”
He got her a toy. And treats. The two items held in his hands bring a new feeling into your chest as you let out a nervous laugh. Maybe he can just come right in?
